Clinical Relevance The use of alcohol-containing mouth rinses with a low pH may increase the sorption and solubility of resin composites. The nanofilled resin composite underwent more surface degradation than the hybrid type.

SUMMARY The aim of this review was to compile recent evidence related to nanofilled resin composite materials regarding the properties and clinical performance. Special attention was given to mechanical properties, such as strength, hardness, abrasive wear, water sorption, and solubility. The clinical performance of nanocomposite materials compared with hybrid resin composites was also addressed in terms of retention and success rates, marginal adaptation, color match, and surface roughness. A search of English peer-reviewed dental literature (2003-2017) from PubMed and MEDLINE databases was conducted using the terms “nanocomposites” or “nanofilled resin composite” and “clinical evaluation.” The list was screened, and 82 papers that were relevant to the objectives of this work were included in the review. Mechanical properties of nanocomposites are generally comparable to those of hybrid composites but higher than microfilled composites. Nanocomposites presented lower abrasive wear than hybrids but higher sorption values. Their clinical performance was comparable to that of hybrid composites.

Clinical Relevance The results of this study indicate that preheating composites can improve adaptation of resin composites to tooth structure. This technique significantly reduced microleakage. However, delaying light curing of the preheated composite after placement appears to be counterproductive and diminishes the positive effects from the preheating treatment. Flowable liner was less effective than preheating the composite in reducing microleakage.

Clinical Relevance Photo-polymerization using second generation LED and halogen light in the soft-start mode of curing was able to produce an adequate degree of conversion in resin composites. The lower degree of conversion produced by low power LED in the soft-start mode could lead to restoration failure, degradation of the organic matrix and recurrent caries.

ABSTRACT Background Consumption of certain beverages may affect the esthetic and physical properties of the resin composite, thereby undermining the quality of restorations. Aim To analyze the effect of three beverages (cola, coffee, tea) on color stability and surface roughness of three different types of resin composites at various time intervals in vitro. Materials and methods Nano, microhybrid and hybrid resin composites were used. Each material was randomly divided into four equal subgroups of 10 samples each according to the beverages used (cola, coffee, tea, distilled water). The samples were immersed in each beverage for 1, 15 and 30 days. Surface roughness and color changes measurements were noted at the baseline—the first, fifteenth and thirteenth day. Results It was found that nanoresin composite followed by microhybrid and hybrid showed least surface roughness and color change. The Coke beverage subgroup showed more surface roughness and the subgroup coffee has shown more color changes with respect to other subgroups. Conclusion All specimens showed discoloration after completion of the test period which was visually perceptible and clinically unacceptable. At the end of 30th day, among the materials, nanofilled composite resin showed comparatively less surface roughness and color change than microhybrid and hybrid composite resins.
