MoSi2 has recently been investigated as a potential material for high temperature structural applications. It has excellent oxidation resistance up to 1700°C, a high melting temperature, 2030°C, and a brittle-to-ductile transition temperature at 900-1000°C. WSi2 is isomorphous with MoSi2 and has a body-centered tetragonal unit cell of the space group 14/mmm. The lattice parameters are a=3.20 Å and c=7.84 Å for MoSi2 and a=3.21 Å and c=7.88 Å for WSi2. Therefore, WSi2 was added to MoSi2 to improve its strength via solid solution hardening. The purpose of this study was to investigate the slip systems in polycrystalline MoSi2/WSi2 alloys.

Based on the research results, coefficients in constitutive equations, describing the kinetics of dynamic, meta-dynamic, and static recrystallization in high-carbon bainitic steel during hot deformation were determined. The developed mathematical model takes into account the dependence of the changing kinetics in the structural size of the preliminary austenite grains, the value of strain, strain rate, temperature, and time. Physical simulations were carried out on rectangular specimens. Compression tests with a flat state of deformation were carried out using a Gleeble 3800. Based on dilatometric studies, coefficients were determined in constitutive equations, describing the grain growth of the austenite of high-carbon bainite steel under isothermal annealing conditions. The aim of the research was to verify the developed mathematical models in semi-industrial conditions during the hot-rolling process of high-carbon bainite steel. Analysis of the semi-industrial studies of the hot-rolling and long-term annealing process confirmed the correctness of the predicted mathematical models describing the microstructure evolution.

One important part of the integrity demonstration of large ferritic components is based on the demonstration that they could never undergo brittle fracture. Connections between a ferritic component and an austenitic piping (Dissimilar Metal Weld — DMW) have to respect these rules, in particular the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) created by the welding process and which encounters a brittle-to-ductile transition. Within that frame, the case considered in this article is a Ni base alloy narrow gap weld joint between a ferritic pipe (A533 steel) and an austenitic pipe (316L stainless steel). The aim of the present study is to show that in the same loading conditions, the weld joint is less sensitive to the brittle fracture than the surrounding ferritic part of the component. That is to say that the demonstration should be focused on the ferritic base metal which is the weakest material. The bases of this study rely on a stress-based criterion developed by Chapuliot et al., using a threshold stress (σth) below which the cleavage cannot occur. This threshold stress can be used to define the brittle crack occurrence probability, which means it is possible to determine the highest loading conditions without any brittle fracture risk.

Blends of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) have always been the subject of intense reasearch for encouraging polymer waste recycling while producing new materials for specific applications in a sustainable way. However, being thermodynamically immiscible, these polyolefins form a binary system usually exhibiting lower performances compared with those of the homopolymers. Many studies have been carried out to better understand the PE/PP blend compatibilization for developing a high-performance and cost-effective product. Both nonreactive and reactive compatibilization promote the brittle to ductile transition for a PE/PP blend. However, the final product usually does not meet the requirements for high demanding commercial applications. Therefore, further PE/PP modification with a reinforcing filler, being either synthetic or natural, proved to be a good method for manufacturing high-performance reinforcend polymer blend composites, with superior and tailored properties. This review summarizes the recent progress in compatibilization techniques applied for enhancing the interfacial adhesion between PE and PP. Moreover, future perspectives on better understanding the influence of themodynamics on PE/PP synergy are discussed to introduce more effective compatibilization strategies, which will allow this blend to be used for innovative industrial applications.
