This study aims at investigating the students and hard science teachers’ perceptions on the use of English as the language of instruction, the frequency of English used as the medium of instruction by hard science teachers, and the hard science teachers’ professional competences at SMP Negeri 1 Denpasar in science classes at RSBI (Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional). The subjects of this study were the students and hard science teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Denpasar. The data on the frequency of English used by the teachers were gathered by recording the instructional process. The students and teachers’ perceptions and the teachers’ professional competencies were gathered using questionnaire and interview. The obtained data were then analyzed descriptively. The findings of the study showed that the students and hard science teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Denpasar have positive perceptions toward English. The frequency of the use of English as the medium of instruction varies. It showed that the mathematics teacher had a high frequency of English use. While the frequency of biology and a physics teacher in using English was considerably very low. The data also revealed that the hard science teachers had implemented professional competencies covering pedagogy, personal, social, and professional competencies.

The present study explores Moroccan science teachers’ perceptions of teaching science subjects through foreign languages, mainly French, in Moroccan secondary schools. Seventeen science and technology teachers have been interviewed and data were analysed following the grounded theory methodology. The researcher constructs hypotheses based on data collection and analysis following axial coding. The findings of the study reveal that although science teachers hold positive attitudes towards the change in the language of instruction, they do not agree with the way this new initiative is being implemented. According to them, neither teachers nor students have been prepared to cope with a foreign language as a medium of instruction. They think students’ low French proficiency is the major challenge in this new initiative. Hence, they admit to resorting to the mother tongue to facilitate students’ content learning. Also, they have expressed their dissatisfaction with the prioritization of French as a foreign language and as a language of instruction. Instead, they suggest preparing young generations to switch to English as a medium of instruction through introducing English as a first foreign language at the primary and middle schools instead of French. The study ends up with some implications to overcome the challenges of the new policy.

English medium of instruction in multilingual science classes: teaching science or language? is an attempt to identify the effects, methods, and approaches of teaching science in English medium of instruction in Multilingual (ML) science classes. The article is prepared on the basis of in-depth interviews taken with science teachers who are teaching science in multilingual classes. Three science teachers are selected purposively from different three (English Medium Instructions) EMI schools of Kathmandu valley. After taking the interview it was transcribed, coded, and generated the theme. Based on the themes generated it was found that the EMI is important for teaching and learning but it is not everything. Similarly, it was found that the teaching of science is not similar to teaching the grammar structures, and always not possible to use English as a medium of making the concept clear of theoretical ideas of science.

There has recently been an increase in English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in higher education (HE). The growth of EMI has led to a proliferation of descriptive research on teachers' linguistic competence, learners' and teachers' perceptions of and attitudes toward EMI, the methodology implemented in English as a medium of instruction, and the support and training provided to EMI teaching staff. However, to date, this rise in EMI has not been accompanied by a plethora of research on pedagogical and linguistic considerations. This chapter sheds light on some of these factors, with a focus on lecturers' teaching methodology. Focus group interviews and case study analyses were conducted involving EMI lecturers from a university in southern Spain. The data obtained in this study have been used to establish a pedagogical proposal for in-service EMI teacher training.

Teachers encounter the challenge of how to provide students adequate awareness of science-related careers. Therefore, innovative teaching material for promoting science-related careers needs to be designed. Educational innovations can be successful if teachers experience ownership and agency towards the designed teaching material. In this case study, a multi-professional group of two science teachers, a researcher, and a dentist co-designed instruction including a career presentation and relevant information about field-specific education and skills needed by a professional in that field. We refer to this as career-related instruction. The designed learning unit includes a scenario, inquiries and career-related activities. Teachers’ perceptions about co-designing and implementing the learning unit in science education are examined as well as students’ perceptions about the scenario. Data consists of teacher interviews and discussions and student questionnaires. A content analysis reveals the teachers’ high ownership and agency in co-designing the instruction, which was relevant, interesting and informative for students. It was easy for teachers to implement the learning unit even though they were not involved in every phase of the design process. We conclude that by strengthening teachers’ ownership and agency through multi-professional co-designing, relevant and interesting career-related instruction can be designed and implemented.

Se presentan algunos fundamentos y resultados de la investigación titulada "La experimentación y los procesos de formación de profesores de ciencias naturales", desarrollada por el Grupo de Estudios Culturales sobre las Ciencias y su Enseñanza de la Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia. La investigación tuvo como propósito fundamentar una propuesta de formación de profesores de física, que aborde la experimentación en estrecha relación con reflexiones surgidas de la Naturaleza de las ciencias. Se adelantó tanto un análisis documental como un estudio de caso de tipo cualitativo–interpretativo, de los enunciados de un grupo de profesores de física a propósito de temáticas relacionadas con la experimentación. Los análisis adelantados permitieron caracterizar formas de asumir el rol de la experimentación en la clase de ciencias, que sirvieron de base para diseñar una propuesta de enseñanza de las ciencias en torno a la experimentación, dirigida a la formación de profesores de física y contextualizada con aportes de la Naturaleza de las ciencias. AbstractSome foundations and results of the research entitled "The experimentation and training processes of science teachers", developed by the Group Estudios Culturales sobre las Ciencias y su Enseñanza at the University of Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia, are presented. The research was aimed to support a physics teacher training proposal, addressing experimentation and closely with reflections that comes from the Nature of Science. A documentary analysis was developed both as a case study of qualitative–interpretative type of statements of a group of physics teachers about issues related to experimentation. Project-based learning (PBL) is a promising teaching method for integrated science education that has gained momentum in educational research and curriculum reforms, especially as a method to enhance 21st century skills and connected worldview. How teachers implement PBL greatly affects students’ content understanding and development of skills. The purpose of this qualitative study is to highlight active teachers’ PBL practices and their perceptions of the advantages and challenges of implementing PBL to better promote the implementation of PBL in teacher education programs and in integrated science education. This study consisted of two parts: (1) a qualitative-led survey and (2) a case study. First, the data for the survey was collected from January to March 2017 through an online reporting form of an international StarT programme. This programme supports the implementation of interdisciplinary and collaborative PBL in science, mathematics and technology education. 244 teachers from early childhood education to upper secondary school participated from 28 countries. Second, 12 PBL units reported by the teachers were chosen for a case study. The teachers exploited PBL practices that were theme- and inquiry-based, collaborative and engaging to students. However, closer inspection revealed variation and defects in the practices particularly in relation to assessment, using reflection and student-centred approach. In addition, teachers reported several challenges relating to the implementation of PBL. The results indicate that teachers see PBL as beneficial but need support with the implementation. Science teachers’ pedagogical competence in PBL could be promoted through collaborative learning in which students, teachers and other participants are learning from each other.

The integration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in classrooms has been a challenge for the educational systems that aim to cope with the needs and the demands of the 21st century. The TPACK framework represents the knowledge needed by teachers bringing together content knowledge, technological knowledge and pedagogical knowledge with the aim of integrating ICTs into teaching-learning processes. The aim of this study is to determine the primary science teachers’ perceptions of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) addressing teachers’ perceptions of the affordances of technology application in instruction. A total of 133 prımary science teachers in Malaysia were surveyed (Female= 67, Male= 66). Data were collected through “Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge” (TPACK) scale. The questionnaire consisted of 47 questions about TPACK and is based on the survey instrument developed by Schmidt et al. (2009). TPACK involving the seven factors of technological knowledge (TK), pedagogical knowledge (PK), content knowledge (CK), technological content knowledge (TCK), technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK), pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), as well as synthesized knowledge of technology, pedagogy, and content (TPC). The findings indicate that primary science teachers perceive higher self-confidence in pedagogical knowledge in general. Further, no differences between science teachers’ perceptions according to thier gender, while there are diferences between the teachers perceptions of PK, CK, and PCK accordıng to their age

To understand how integrated science education (ISE) can be transferred into successful classroom practices, it is important to understand teachers’ perceptions and self-efficacy. The focus of this study is twofold: (1) to understand how teachers perceive ISE and (2) to assess if science teachers’ perceptions of and experiences with integrated education correlate with their views on self-efficacy in relation to ISE. Ninety-five Finnish science teachers participated in an online survey study. A mixed method approach via exploratory factor analysis and data-driven content analysis was used. Self-efficacy emerged as a key factor explaining teachers’ perceptions of and their lack of confidence in implementing ISE as well as their need for support. In addition, teachers regarded ISE as a relevant teaching method, but challenging to implement, and teachers primarily applied integrated approaches irregularly and seldom. Furthermore, teachers’ experiences with integrated activities and collaboration correlated with their views on integrated education and self-efficacy. These findings indicate teachers need support to better understand and implement ISE.
