The field experiments were conducted during two consecutive seasons of kharif (June to October), 2016 and 2017 at the Experimental Research Farm, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, Nagaland, India. The treatments consisted of four planting geometries i.e. maize+black gram (1:1), maize+black gram (2:2), maize+soybean (1:1) and maize+soybean (2:2) and three weed management practices i.e. weedy check, pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha-1+one hand weeding (1HW) at 30 DAS and two hand weedings (2HW) at 20 and 40 DAS. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with two factors comprising twelve treatment combinations and replicated three times. The results revealed that among the planting geometry, maize+soybean (2:2) recorded the highest weed control efficiency (WCE) and reduced the weed population, fresh weight and dry weight of monocot and dicot weed at 60 DAS and gave the maximum maize equivalent yield (4374.96 kg ha-1). Among the weed management, 2HW at 20 and 40 DAS recorded the lowest weed population, fresh weight, dry weight and the highest weed control efficiency (WCE) of monocot and dicot weed at 60 DAS and the maximum maize equivalent yield as 4591.10 kg ha-1 which was at par with the pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha-1+1HW at 30 DAS as 4461.80 kg ha-1. The highest net return (` ha-1), return per rupee invested and B: C ratio were recorded from the pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha-1+1HW at 30 DAS with ` 36624.05 ha-1 which was closely followed by 2HW at 20 and 40 DAS with Rs. 35428.81 ha-1.

Field experiments were conducted for three years at Pulses and Oilseeds Research Station, Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India during rabi 2008, 2009 and 2010 to develop an efficient chemical weed management practice with newer herbicidal molecules in yellow sarson. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications having eleven treatments. Experimental results revealed that highest seed yield (1456 kg ha-1) was recorded under the treatment twice hand weeding and lowest with weedy check (910 kg ha-1). Twice hand weeding recorded 60% higher seed yield over weedy check. Application of chemical herbicides significantly improved the seed yield over W0 at 5% level of significance.. Among the chemical weed control measures, application of Pendimathalin @ 1 kg a.i./ha (PE) recorded highest seed yield (1320 kg ha-1) of yellow sarson, which was found at par with application of Pendimathalin @ 1.5 kg a.i./ha (PE), Fluchloralin @ 1.5 kg a.i/ha (PPI) and Clodinafop @ 0.06 kg a.i./ha ( 25-30 DAS). Chemical weed management practices increased the seed yield of yellow sarson by 25.3 to 45.1% over weedy check. Highest weed control efficiency (86.4%) was recorded with hand weeding twice. Significant reduction in the total weed density and total weed dry weight were found with the application of chemical herbicides at 5% level of significance. Among the chemical herbicides Pendimathalin @ 1 kg a.i./ha (PE) recorded highest weed control efficiency (81.7%). Chemical weed control measures increased the total microbial population by 26.5 to 89.4% over weedy check and 6.6 to 59.6% over twice hand weeding and thus proved to be environmentally safe and economic for managing weeds in yellow sarson.

Background: Globally, grain legumes are the paramount family of agricultural crops following cereals. Generally, sequence cropping has manifested effectual in increasing farm productivity and profitability. However, sometimes herbicides administered in previous crop may be associated with phytotoxic effects that can later cause damage to the succeeding crops. The present study aimed to understand the residual effect of extreme levels of atrazine on succeeding cowpea under maize-cowpea cropping system. Methods: Field experiments were conducted during Kharif and rabi season of 2019-20 and 2020-21 in a randomized block design with eleven treatments, replicated thrice. Result: Residual effect of pre-emergence atrazine at 0.50 kg a.i. ha-1 followed by tembotrione at 120g a.i. ha-1 as post-emergence at 25 DAS recorded the lowest total weed density (4.41), total weed dry weight (9.81 g m-2) and highest weed control efficiency (39.25%) during rabi 2019-20 while during rabi 2020-21 lowest total weed density (5.03), total weed dry weight (10.68 g m-2) and highest weed control efficiency (39.65%) were noticed in pre-emergence atrazine 50% WP at 2.00 kg a.i. ha-1. Highest seed yield (788.67 and 842.33 kg ha-1) was obtained in weed free treatment.

Field experiments were conducted during Rabi 2014, at Paddy Breeding Station, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to study the effect of pre-emergence / early post emergence herbicides along with hand weeding options on weed control in transplanted rice. The soil of the experimental field was clay loam in texture with pH 8.23. The performance of different pre-emergence application of butachlor 50% EC 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1, flucetosulfuron 10% WG in two doses at 20 g a.i ha-1 and 25 g a.i ha-1, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 10% WB 75 g a.i ha-1, early post emergence application of penoxsulam + cyhalofop-butyl in two doses at 120 g a.i ha-1 and 135 g a.i. ha-1, bispyribac sodium 10% SC 35 g a.i ha-1 were evaluated along with pre-emergence application of pretilachlor 50% EC 1.0 kg a.i ha-1 + HW at 45 DAT, butachlor 50% EC 1.0 kg a.i ha-1 + HW at 45 DAT in comparison with hand weeding twice at 20 and 40 DAT, unweeded control and weed free check. The test variety used in this experiment was Co (R) 50. The experimental results revealed that weed free check had 100% weed control efficiency (WCE) in all the stages of crop growth. Among the various treatments tested, At 90 DAT, weed control efficiency (WCE) was maximum with early post emergence application of penoxsulam + cyhalofop-butyl135 g a.i. ha-1 (T5) recorded the maximum weed control efficiency of 85.78%. The number of productive tillers m-2 recorded ranged between 441 in T5 and 295 in unweeded control (T11). Grain yield ranged between 7717 kg ha-1 in weed free check (T12) and 5194 kg ha-1 in unweeded control (T11). The maximum straw yield of 9277 kg ha-1 was recorded in weed free check (T12). This was on par with early post emergence application of penoxsulam+ cyhalofop-butyl 135 g a.i. ha-1 (T5) and hand weeding twice at 20 and 40 DAT (T10) with 9206 kg ha-1 and 9019 kg ha-1.

An experiment was carried out to find out suitable method of planting and weed management in green gram grown during the kharif season of 2014 and 2015. The density of E. colona and C. rotundus was significantly reduced in raised bed planting method. Significant reduction in total dry weight of weeds was obtained in raised bed planting method as compared to conventional and zero till planting method. Maximum weed control efficiency was found in raised bed planting method. Significantly more number of seeds pod-1 were observed in raised bed planting method as compared to conventional and zero till planting method. Seed yield and straw yield were found maximum in raised bed planting method during both years of study and were statistically at par in conventional and zero till planting method. Harvest index was not influenced by planting methods. Phytotoxicity on crop due to different herbicides was similar under different planting methods. Among different weed management treatments, HW at 15 and 30 DAS was found most effective in reducing density and dry weight of weeds during crop growing period except at 15 DAS (where weeding was done after taking observation). Maximum weed control efficiency was observed in HW (15 and 30 DAS). Weedy check treatment resulted in minimum while weed free treatment resulted in maximum number of seeds pod-1. Among the treatments having herbicide application, post emergence application of Imazethapyr @ 100 g ha-1 resulted in maximum seed and stover yield.

Background: Field experiments/ On Farm Trial (OFT) were conducted at Farmers field in village Hasanchak and Agwanpur under the ICAR- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barh, Patna during the winter season (Rabi). The basic aim of experiment was to find out the effective method of weed control in Zero- tilled wheat through the application of herbicide. Methods: The experiment was laid in Randomized Block design (RBD) in 2014-2015, replicated 4 times (Farmers field) with 5 treatments viz., 2,4-D, ethyl ester 2.00 kg ha-1 at 25 days after sowing (DAS) fb one hand weeding (Conventional tillage-Farmer practices) at 55 DAS, Sulfosulfuron 75% WP 25 g ha-1, Metsulfuron 20% WP @ 20 g ha-1 at 25 DAS, Sulfosuluron 75% WP + Metsulfuron 20% WP @ 40 g ha-1 at 25 DAS and control (Unweeded). Result: Sulfosuluron 75% WP + Metsulfuron 20% WP @ 40 g ha-1 at 25 days after sowing provided effective control of grassy and broadleaf weeds and recorded less dry weight and highest (91%) weed control efficiency (WCE). Herbicide Sulfosulfuron 75% WP 25 g ha-1 and Metsulfuron 20% WP @ 20 g ha-1 controlled only grassy and broadleaf weeds, respectively. 2,4-D, ethyl ester 2.00 kg ha-1 fb one hand weeding (Conventional tillage-Farmer practices) recorded higher weed dry weight and less weed control efficiency (WCE). Significantly higher grain yield (4280 kg ha-1) was recorded under Sulfosuluron 75% WP + Metsulfuron 20% WP @ 40 g ha-1 at 25 days after sowing followed by Metsulfuron 20% WP 20 g ha-1, Sulfosulfuron 75% WP 25 g ha-1, 2,4-D, 2.00 kg ha-1 fb one hand weeding (Farmer practices). Significantly higher net return (Rs. 48145 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.93) were recorded under Sulfosuluron 75% WP + Metsulfuron 20% WP @ 40 g ha-1 at 25 days after sowing.

The experiment was laid out Tirhut College of Agriculture, farm Dholi, Muzaffarpur, Bihar during kharif season 2016, to study the effect of weed management practices on weed control, yield and economics of soybean [Glycine max (L.)]. Hand weeding twice at 25 and 45 DAS was found most effective to control weeds in soybean and recorded lowest weed count, weed dry matter and highest weed control efficiency. Among herbicide, application of Pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha as PE (Pre-emergance) and Imazethapyr 55 g/ha as PoE (Post-emergance) at 25 DAS was found to be more efficient and cost effective to reduce weed population/m2 (53.94 & 67.22), dry weight of weeds/m2 (21.16 & 45.86 g) an increased weed control efficiency (53.86 & 68.83%) significantly in both the stages 30 and 60 DAS. Beside it, Pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha + Imazethapyr 55 g/ha at 25 DAS, Pendimethalin 1.0 kg/ha + one hand weeding at 40 DAS and hand weeding twice at 25 and 45 DAS were equally efficient in increasing the grain yield, straw yield, weed index and gross returns than control but net returns (39870/ha) and benefit-cost ratio (1.70) was obtained maximum only with Pendmethalin 1.0 kg/ha and Imazethapyr 55 g/ha at 25 DAS.

An experiment entitled: Maize yield as affected by methods of tillage and weed control methods was conducted at Agronomy Research Farms, The University of Agriculture Peshawar during summer 2016. The study was conducted in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with split plot arrangement having four replications. Tillage practices 1) Chisel plough + rotavator 2) Mouldboard plough + rotavator 3) Cultivator + rotavator and 4) Rotavator were assigned to main plots. Weed management practices included 1) Control, 2) Hoeing 15 days after sowing 3) Hoeing 15 and 30 days after sowing 4) Hoeing 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing, and 4) Herbicide (nicosulfuron) were kept into the subplots. The results revealed that chisel plough + rotavator has significantly reduced weeds m-2 (122, 101 and 125 weeds m-2), weeds fresh weight (19.73 g m-2, 116.35 g m-2 and 252.56 g m-2) and weeds dry weight (6.83 g m-2, 38.69 g m-2 and 80.61 g m-2) at 30, 45 and 60 days after sowing, respectively. The operation of chisel plough + rotavator has produced tallest plants (221.22 cm) with maximum grain rows ear-1 (16), grain yield (3586 kg ha-1) and shelling percentage (78.14%). Among weed control methods, hoeing 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing revealed maximum plant height (226.41 cm), grain rows ear-1 (16), grain yield (3604 kg ha-1) and shelling percentage (79.11%). All weed control methods have showed significant reduction in weeds m-2, weeds fresh weight and weeds dry weight. Interaction was also found significant for weeds m-2 at 60 DAS and grain yield of maize. Lowest weeds (56 weeds m-2) at 60 DAS and highest grain yield (4569 kg ha-1) was recorded when seedbed was prepared with chisel plough + rotavator with 3 hoeings (hoeing 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing). It is concluded that treatment of chisel plough + rotavator and hoeing 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing has significantly produced maximum grain yield of maize crop.
