Australias geological heritage a national inventory for future geoparks and geotourism

Australia has a coastline of around 32,000 km, with varying rock types and structure, coastal type and climate. Outstanding and representative coastal sites form a significant part of the Australian inventory. Major terrains included inland deserts (for example the Simpson Desert dune field, northern tropical savannah (the Kakadu World Heritage Region, glacial and periglacial upland in the far south (southwest Tasmania, broad inland riverine plays and the young volcanic provinces of southeastern Australia and northeastern Australia.

On the eastern edge of the Simpson dune field, an unusual find of 40–60 mourning caps in a single cluster, prompts us to raise issues about its interpretation. This region is known for violence along the colonial frontier, and this kopi site is only one to two days walk from the site of a known massacre of a ceremonial gathering of people at Kaliduwarry waterhole in about 1878. There is no direct evidence showing that this site coincides with colonial expansion in this region in the late 1870s, but the condition of these caps and their geomorphic context indicate that this site cannot be older than a few hundred years. If it dates to the pre-contact period in the 1800s, this kopi site must reflect a higher degree of social ranking and complexity than is usually assumed in the ethnography. Whether or not this remarkable site relates to the death of a single, high-ranked individual or multiple deaths on the colonial frontier in a single event, this cluster of mourning caps indicates that 40–60 people were in mourning simultaneously.

AbstractGeosite and geodiversity site inventories are among the most important means of geological diversity conservation and promotion. However, there are other in situ geological features that have significant educational potential and are not included in many inventories, namely, localities of widespread rock types, common minerals and fossil-bearing strata. In this paper, a broad utilisation of these petrographic, mineralogical and palaeontological geodiversity elements for geoscience communication purposes is postulated, with a case study that focuses on the geological heritage of Poland. A simple quantitative framework for the evaluation of the educational potential of rock types is used for the assessment of preselected geological units on the geological map of Poland. The preferences of potential geotourists are estimated using the interactive web-based map. The promotional materials are written for the most distinctive rock types and geological units that scored the highest in the assessment procedure and/or were most frequently selected by users. This procedure stimulates geodiversity promotion in areas where few geosites and geodiversity sites are documented and no educational activities or interpretative facilities are available, potentially increasing the number of geotourism destinations. The rocks and minerals utilised here are exposed over large areas and can be sampled and studied by untrained collectors without any loss of geodiversity. Shifting the involvement of individuals interested in geosciences from extraordinary to more common rocky outcrops helps to protect the geological heritage and enhances conservation of the most spectacular features for future generations. Field activities such as individual searching and studying outcrops, in turn, play an important role in learning in geosciences, facilitating the acquisition of knowledge and encouraging interdisciplinary thinking. Future improvements could include expanding the applicability of the evaluation method, employment of a location-based learning approach #and more detailed studies of the preferences of potential geotourists.

There are a range of natural resources for geotourism in Korea, including scenic mountains with variable geological histories, hot springs, and coastline environments. Many of the national and provincial parks and natural monuments in Korea have been designated because of their geological values. Three sites on Jeju Island have been inscribed on the World Heritage list largely for geological values such as volcanic features and landscape and associated scenic values. Furthermore, there are many geological heritage sites designated as natural monuments in Cretaceous sedimentary basins in Korea. They include dinosaur fossil sites and geologically scenic sites. The former are of great scientific importance and many have the potential to be developed into geotourism destinations of global significance. Five sites, on the Korean Cretaceous Deinosaur Coast which have been very important for regional tourism, are currently being nominated as World Heritage for their highly significant fossil trackways and dinosaur eggs. The full gambit of geotourism potential for Korean geological heritage has rarely been studied (Jeong, 2000; Heo et al., 2006a; Heo et al., 2006b; Heo, 2007). In this chapter the Cretaceous geosites in Korea are summarized in respect to their importance as globally significant geotourism resources.

This paper describes a previously unknown mikiri well in the Simpson dune field. This site was abandoned about 500-600 years ago and does not feature in ethnographic records for this region. We argue that its abandonment was most likely due to failure of the well caused by a fall in the local watertable. The Simpson Desert is one of the major sand-ridge deserts of the world, but current views of the chronology of human use of this vast dune field rest on only a handful of radiocarbon ages (n=12). The radiocarbon ages for this mikiri, and its surroundings, add to this limited dataset. We plot all available radiocarbon ages from archaeological sites in the dune field showing that occupation of this mikiri coincided with a widespread increase in use of the dune field during the last millennium, at about the time the Wangkanguru people in the dune field were becoming linguistically distinct from the Arabana to the west.

The global significance of Krakatau Volcanic Complex and Way Kambas National Park is the best potential areas to be developed as part of a world heritage, particularly as UNESCO Global Geopark. Both of these objects are in the Lampung Province, Indonesia. Soon, it is necessary to identify and make an inventory of key sites that could become the theme of the area. The study of geodiversity and scientific valuation was carried out which referred to the Technical Guidelines for the Assessment of Indonesia Geological Heritage Resources, 2019. Based on these studies and assessments, there are 14 key sites to represent for Geopark Krakatau-Way Kambas themes. These sites are closely related to the evolution of tectonic activity in the Southern Sumatera as well as the dynamics of magmatism and paleovolcanism that have occurred since the Mesozoic which has signification in human history as world heritage.

The Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site (also known as the ‘Jurassic Coast’), stretches for 155 km across the southern English coastline, encompassing one of the most spectacular geological sequences in the world. The internationally renowned coastal exposures of the Jurassic Coast were awarded World Heritage Site status in 2001 based on a near complete sequence of Mesozoic rocks, which record evidence and development of early reptiles through to the age of the dinosaurs. For a site to obtain World Heritage Site status, it must exhibit cultural or natural features that are of ‘outstanding universal value’ and must be protected for present and future generations of all humanity. Protecting the integrity (or condition) of the site is essential for maintaining the qualities that led to site inscription. Coastal erosion maintains the geological integrity of the Jurassic Coast by exposing fossils that are then washed out onto the beaches. The fossils are an important part of our geological heritage.
