This research focused on the social concern of college students’ participation in physical exercise and mobile phone dependence. The research model and hypotheses in this study were constructed based on the self-control theory and by reviewing previous research. This research distributed questionnaires to 207 college students from a university in Guangzhou, China to obtain relevant data. Mediation analysis was employed to test the four hypotheses drawn from empirical and conceptual research. The results of this research showed that first, the longer the exercise duration of college students, the higher the level of their self-control, thus exercise duration has a significant positive impact on self-control. Second, increasing the exercise duration of college students had no effect on their mobile phone dependence. Third, the higher the level of self-control, the lower the dependence on mobile phones, thus signifying that self-control has significantly negative impact on mobile phone dependence. Fourth, self-control plays a mediating role in the effect of exercise duration on mobile phone dependence. In conclusion, the longer the exercise duration of college students, the higher the level of self-control, in which it is able to significantly reduce the dependence on mobile phones.

PurposeTo find the root of the problem for compulsive buying behavior of students in the digital era by exploring psychological factors such as materialism, self-esteem, self-control, narcissism, money attitude and mood as boosters of the effect of income on compulsive buying behavior.Design/methodology/approachThe unit of analysis in this research was a group of students having experience using e-commerce. The data collection method in this study was a closed questionnaire with a scale of 1–5 agree–disagree intervals distributed to 250 students who have shopping experience through e-commerce. WARP-PLS statistics was used.FindingsThe study shows that self-esteem and mood do not moderate the effect of income on compulsive buying behavior. Meanwhile, materialism, narcissism, self-control and money attitude can significantly moderate the effect of income on compulsive buying behavior.Research limitations/implicationsThat the data used is only limited to students in Central Java Province; so for future research, it is necessary to expand data to different provinces or different countries. This research has implications that the synthesis between mainstream conventional economic thought and behavioral economics can be tested well in this model.Originality/valueThis study is proof of the synthesis between conventional and behavioral economic thought, which is a solution to the contradiction of the neoclassical paradigm of thought and behavioral economic thought in understanding consumer behavior, especially in compulsive buying behavior.Peer reviewThe peer review history for this article is available at: https://publons.com/publon/10.1108/IJSE-10-2019-0652

The problem of mobile phone dependence is becoming more and more serious. Therefore, it is very important to explore the causes of mobile phone dependence and its psychological mechanism. One of the important characteristics of mobile phone dependence is the loss of control, which shows that self-control is an important factor affecting mobile phone dependence. Self-continuity is closely related to cell phone dependence. Mobile phone addicts usually use mobile phones to temporarily relieve the pressure and negative emotions, but it will lead to more pressure and negative emotions in the future. In order to examine the situation of college students’ future self-continuity, self-control and mobile phone addiction as well as their relationships, especially mediating effect of self-control, a total of 482 college students were assessed with Future Self-Continuity Scale (FSC), Self-Control Scale (SCS), and Mobile Phone Dependency Index (MPAI). The results showed that: (1) The future self-continuity, self-control and mobile phone dependence of the college students in this study were all at a medium level, and there was no significant difference in demographic variables (such as gender, grade, etc.); (2) Both future self-continuity and self-control were negatively correlated with mobile phone dependence; (3) There was a significant positive correlation between future self-continuity and self-control; (4) Self-control played a partial mediating role between future self-continuity and mobile phone dependence. Therefore, improving self-continuity and self-control can be an effective way to intervene mobile phone dependence. In addition research implication, limitations and future directions were discussed.
