This study investigates the reflection of English reading curriculum in Junior High School textbooks in terms of types of syllabus, reading tasks and cognitive level of reading tasks. Two books have been employed as documents to be analyzed in this research. The first book is Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Pertama Kelas VIII Edisi 4 which is one of electronic textbooks (Buku Sekolah Elektronik (BSE)) published by Department of National Education. The second book is English on Sky (EOS)2 for Junior High School Students Year VIII from Erlangga publisher. The findings suggested that both BSE and EOS have reflected a part of English reading curriculum. In this case BSE is better than EOS.  However, both textbooks need to be improved in fulfilling the curriculum demand in terms of types of reading tasks and cognitive levels of reading tasks. Based on the research findings, some recommendations for curriculum development are finally presented.

This research tries to apply the scaffolding teaching mode in English reading teaching, with the purpose of enhancing students’ interest in reading and improving their reading levels. This study explores whether scaffolding teaching can enhance students’ reading interest and thus improve junior high school students’ English reading ability. After a 3-month-long teaching experiment, through the comparison and analysis of questionnaires and English reading scores, it is found out that scaffolding teaching is beneficial to enhance students’ reading interest and improve students’ reading level.

Reading is not only one of the purposes of English teaching, but also an important way of English learning. Students’ knowledge of English reading enables them to read effectively. At this time, students’ reading focus will gradually shift from learning to using English to obtain information and experience the real purpose of English reading. The traditional junior high school English reading teaching can’t meet the requirements of the new curriculum reform and helps students achieve their initial learning goals. Based on the basic theoretical knowledge of English reading teaching, this article analyzes the problems encountered by teachers and students in the process of English reading teaching, and puts forward the corresponding countermeasures, hoping to promote the level of junior high school students’ English reading teaching.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate English reading motivation, reading strategy, reading attitude and reading interest of junior high school students (Year 7, 8 and 9) in Palembang. The sample of this study was three-hundred students selected randomly from ten schools. In accordance with quantitative research design, English reading motivation, reading strategy, reading attitude and reading interest questionnaires were used as the instruments to collect the data which were statistically analyzed. The findings of this study showed that the students demonstrated a high level of English reading motivation; specifically, their instrumental motivation for reading was higher than the integrative one. Next, there was a high use of reading strategies, with Problem-Solving reading strategy as the highly used ones. The finding also revealed that the students demonstrated a positive reading attitude and their reading interest showed their reading preference was adventure stories. Keywords: English reading motivation, reading strategies, reading attitude, reading interest, self-efficacy, junior high school students

Selecting appropriate textbook to the students is important because textbook have dominant role in the success of foreign language teaching and learning. The purpose this article is to analyze the readability level of English reading texts with automated computer tools. There are eight reading texts that will be analyzed in this qualitative study.  The data and source of data of this research were adopted from an English textbook entitled Pathway to English 2 Textbook for the Eighth Grade of Junior High School Students Published by Erlangga. The results reveal that only 1 text was appropriate for seven or eight grade of Junior High School students. There were 6 texts appropriate elementary students. And there was 1 text suitable for Senior High School students.

This study aimed to develop English reading materials needed for students of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School through Authentic Material Approach (AMA).The objective of this study was to develop relevant English reading materials to the needs of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School students especially eight grade . This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D) design through six phases: 1) Collecting data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Developing new materials, 4) Validating product 5) Revising materials, 6) final product. The data of this research were from the existing materials, syllabus,  students’ questionnaire, and the teachers’ interview. The result of this research showed that the existing materials were not suitable to the Islamic school students’ needs.. Therefore, new English reading materials were developed through Authentic Material Approach (AMA) principles in order to meet the Islamic students’ needs. Furthermore, developing English reading materials were recount text. Recount text expose personal recount “Tarawih Changed his Life and the biographical recounts of Prophet Muhammad SAW and Shalahuddin Al-Ayyubi”. The English reading materials were validated by English teacher and English lecturer. Both of them agreed that new English reading materials were suitable with the Islamic school students’ needs. Key Words: English reading materials, Islamic junior high school, Research and Development (R&D)

Japan’s national education policy puts importance on children learning to program. In fact, course guidelines published by the government in 2008 made the programming of the measurement and control compulsory in junior high schools, and learning programming will be made compulsory in elementary schools in 2020. This research studies robotics classes for elementary and junior high school students. The tasks set for the robots used in each class are familiar to children, and they were set with the aim of inspiring a proactive learning attitude in the children. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of robots in teaching programming to children.

English has always been an essential part of junior high school curriculum. Improving students’ reading ability is not only the purpose of learning English for junior middle school students, but also an important means to acquire new knowledge. However, reading as one of the four basic skills required by the English course often keep students from getting high marks in the middle of the exam, although they took lots of time to read. This paper emphasizes the importance of English reading in junior middle school and analyzes the current situations and problems of students’ reading. It introduces the theories of reading and reading comprehension, discourse and discourse analysis, and the relationship between reading and discourse. The author puts forward some measures to improve the reading ability of students. There are many researches on discourse analysis about university, but the research is less involved in the secondary school, and the study of reading comprehension in junior middle school is even rarer. Therefore, the author thinks that it is very necessary to improve the discourse ability of junior high school students.
