Natural zeolite is a hydrated aluminosilicate substance that has excellent ion exchange and adsorption properties and is environmentally and economically friendly. This review describes the current application and modification of zeolite in wastewater treatment using acid and surfactants, zeolite composites (such as zeolite membranes), permeable reactive barriers and photocatalysts. The properties of zeolite as well as the regeneration and desorption of cast-off zeolite are briefly reviewed. Modifications are made to improve the capability of zeolite in wastewater treatment facilities. Furthermore, this review proposes the integration of zeolite and other available technologies to treat emerging pollutants in wastewater. Different types of zeolite (natural and synthetic zeolite of different origins) are compared, and their properties are evaluated. Different type of pollutants and treatment methods involving zeolite are also discussed. Zeolite is enhanced to solve the problem of various pollutants in wastewater.

Optimal management is usually at the top of the concerns in the context of water infrastructures. In the specific domain of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), European Directive 91/271 established the need of implementing a biological treatment of wastewater leading to an intensive construction of WWTPs in several European countries, which now present important problems of maintenance. These facilities are composed of different types of assets, which should be managed efficiently in order to optimize the performance of the processes as well as the maintenance and replacement costs of the equipment. In fact, the deterioration of these assets increases the operational risk and endangers the continuity of the service of these WWTPs. In this paper, the authors combine multicriteria methodologies (MCDM) and economic aspects of the equipment to define an appropriate technical–economical replacement policy. With the aim of developing a reference procedure in the wastewater sector, an approach has been made to blower pump, which is an equipment widely used in WWTPs to provide a continuous air flow to the reactor facilitating the elimination of organic matter and the nutrients contained in the wastewater. The proposal integrates aspects such as acquisition costs and corrective maintenance, interest rate, and amortization based on the condition of the equipment.

Information on the conditions of generation, volumes, chemical composition and properties of sludge generated at the industrial wastewater treatment facilities of motor transport enterprises is provided. Examples of process engineering solutions for dewatering sludge generated during the wastewater treatment process are given. The technological aspects of enhancing mechanical dewatering of thickened sludge using high-molecular polyelectrolytes are considered. The data of laboratory experiments on choosing the type of flocculant, its dose, technological parameters of the process, as well as the results of determining the moisture content of dewatered sludge obtained in a model of a drum vacuum filter are presented. Examples of effective domestically produced dewatering apparatus and their technical characteristics, recommendations and criteria for their selection, as well as factors influencing the operational parameters of the dewatering equipment are given. It is found that the highest dewatering capacity of drum vacuum filters (residual sludge moisture content from 66 to 83) can be achieved by using VPK-402 cationic flocculant for processing sludge generated at the workshop premises of a motor transport enterprise.

Information on the research and design solutions developed by the experts of MosvodokanalNIIproject JSC in the field of surface runoff treatment from the territory of Moscow, the causes of water sources pollution with raw surface runoff in the 1970s. The basic characteristics of the complexes for the enhanced treatment of surface runoff, the developed projects of wastewater treatment facilities for industrial enterprises with a catchment area of 0.3 1 5 10 and 15 ha. It is shown that the effectiveness of surface runoff treatment meets the requirements to water bodies of commercial fishing importance. At the same time, for dewatering of sludge generated in the retention basin of wastewater treatment facilities, a grit dewatering bay is included into the process flow scheme, and an oil separator is used to collect floating oil products. The novelty of the developed technology for neutralization of surface runoff and sludge treatment has been acknowledged by five patents of the Russian Federation, approved by Gosstroy of the Russian Federation, the Central Department of Fisheries Examination and Review and Protection and Renewal and Acclimatization Standards, the Moscow City and Moscow Region Sanitary Service, Moskompriroda and Mosgosekspertiza services. The contribution of the research workers of the laboratory for the treatment of natural, industrialstorm wastewater and sludge processing to the solution of problems of surface runoff treatment is demonstrated. The information about the history of development and promising areas of research activity of the laboratory, its plans in the organizational, methodological and educational work with young professionals is given.

For upgrading the urban drainage system (UDS) the reduction of pollution impacts is the priority task concerning the environmental protection of the receiving waters. With simulation models the interactions between surface, sewer systems, overflow structures and treatment facilities within the UDS can be shown. Models to simulate the pollutant impacts, transport and the effects on the receiving waters are available. In a first step a pollutant transport model of sewer systems and a model to simulate the wastewater treatment processes are connected. With these models the efficiency of upgrading measures can be checked in all parts of urban drainage systems.

Influent and effluent data from about 120 small wastewater treatment plants (100 - 2000 PE) have been collected and processed. Seven different types of plants are represented. The effluent quality and the treatment efficiency have been evaluated. The most common type of plant is mechanical/biological treatment plants. Some of them are nitrifying and some are also extended for chemical precipitation of phosphorus. Constructed wetlands and biological sandfilters are also represented among the small wastewater treatment plants.
