The global spread of Covid-19 has enhanced the adoption of virtual education and the use of technology in order to reduce the risk of contagion. Recently, the academics have turn out to be more technology-orientated and the educational establishments continue to seek opportunities in order to adopt an environment where all researchers could have access to high-quality scientific resources at anytime and anywhere in the world. Cloud computing is a model, which provides the users with services and application software on-demand, using the Internet. While the use of cloud computing applications is growing, there are ongoing research challenges related to guaranteeing security, privacy and the integration of the cloud applications. To the extent of our knowledge, the present study is the first from this type to thoroughly present the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on cloud computing environment in higher education institutions in Iraqi universities. This study will critically analysis the views of the faculty staff and researchers in Iraqi universities on cloud computing. It also tries to take a quick look at how Iraqi university staff responded to the epidemic in terms of research activities. The results shows that about 99% of the respondents considered the cloud applications to have great role in encouraging the research works in their institutes. Concerning the benefits of cloud services, the availability and saving cost were selected as most important factors that encouraging the adoption of cloud services. On the other hand, issues related to performance, lack of user control were selected as major problems in applying cloud services in Iraqi institutions Finally, it can be concluding that reducing the risks of the security, authorization, control and providing better performance of cloud services can enhance the use of cloud applications by researchers at Iraqi universities.

The education landscape around the world is in a constant state of flux and evolution, facing significant challenges in adopting new and emerging technologies. This is driven mainly by a new genre of students with learning needs that are vastly different from those of their predecessors. It is increasingly recognized that the use of technology in higher education is essential to providing high quality education and preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century. Advances in technology offer new opportunities in enhancing teaching and learning. The new technologies enable individuals to personalize the environment in which they work or learn a range of tools to meet their interests and needs. In this chapter, we attempt to explore the salient features of the nature and educational potentials of ‘cloud computing' in order to exploit its affordance in teaching and learning in the context of higher education. It is evident that cloud computing plays a significant role in the higher education landscape as both a ubiquitous computing tool and a powerful platform. Although the adoption of cloud computing promises various benefits to an organization, a successful adoption of cloud computing in an organization, particularly in educational institutes, requires an understanding of different dynamics and expertise in diverse domains. This chapter aims at describing an architecture of Cloud Computing for Education (CCE), which includes a number of steps for adopting and implementing cloud computing. To implement this architecture, we have also outlined an open framework that is used as a guidance in any organisations with any cloud computing platforms and infrastructures towards the successful adoption and implementation of cloud computing.

Cloud computing is becoming a mainstream aspect of information technology. How to efficiently manage the cloud resources across multiple cloud domains is critical for providing continuous cloud services. This paper introduces the principle and review recent research progress on cloud service to support network virtualization. It presents a framework of network-Cloud convergence based on data center network and gives a survey on key technologies for realizing cloud center and service; the reliability of cloud applications can be greatly improved.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are under pressure to provide evidence of student success. In addition to traditional performance indicators such as GPA, grades, and rates of retention, graduation and employment, stakeholders also required institutions to provide evidence of institutional learning outcomes (ILOs). ILOs encompass the knowledge and skills that all students regardless of disciplines from a specific university are expected to demonstrate upon their graduation. This case study examines a complete internal quality assurance (IQA) cycle from a U.S. comprehensive university, including the adaptation of national authentic assessment measures, the use of technology in data analysis, the best practices to communicate assessment results to multiple internal stakeholders to facilitate leadership decision-making, the challenges encountered, and the improvement plans to sustain the procedure. Researchers also make recommendations to Vietnam HEIs that want to adopt IQA of ILOs for both quality improvement and accountability purposes.


The cloud computing has utilization of pervasive or distributed models on demand access to highly configurable computing devices for fast provision and less management efforts. The complex architecture, multitenant and virtual environment in cloud infrastructure asks for risks identification and mitigation. The cloud computing model business needs reassurances so it’s prime consideration for testing the cloud services. This research primarily identifies various risks, threats, testing models and vulnerabilities in cloud computing environment. This research has implemented the risk assessment and cloud readiness for PaaS environment by scanning its code with a software vendor. The research makes an emphasis on risk minimization strategies and trust evaluation in cloud computing environment.


Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks has become the most powerful cyber weapon to target the businesses that operate on the cloud computing environment. The sophisticated DDoS attack affects the functionalities of the cloud services and affects its core capabilities of cloud such as availability and reliability. The current intrusion detection system (IDS) must cope with the dynamicity and intensity of immense traffic at the cloud hosted applications and the security attack must be inspected based on the attack flow characteristics. Hence, the proposed Adaptive Learning and Automatic Filtering of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks in Cloud Computing Environment is designed to adapt with varying kind of protocol attacks using misuse detection. The system is equipped with custom and threshold techniques that satisfies security requirements and can identify the different DDoS security attacks. The proposed system provides promising results in detecting the DDoS attacks in cloud environment with high detection accuracy and good alert reduction. Threshold method provides 98% detection accuracy with 99.91%, 99.92% and 99.94% alert reduction for ICMP, UDP and TCP SYN flood attack. The defense system filters the attack sources at the target virtual instance and protects the cloud applications from DDoS attacks.

Data security in the cloud continues to be a huge concern. The adoption of cloud services continues to increase with more businesses transitioning from on premise technology infrastructures to outsourcing cloud-based infrastructures. As the cloud becomes more popular, users are increasingly demanding control over critical security elements of the data and technology assets that are in the cloud. In addition, there are still cries for greater data and security in the cloud. The goal of this paper is to provide cloud service users with greater control over data security in the cloud while at the same time optimizing overall security in the multi-tenant cloud computing environment. This paper introduces cloud-based intelligent agents that are configurable by the users and are expected to give greater compliance for data security in any of the cloud service models.

The introduction of computers has been a huge plus to human life in its entirety because it provides both the world of business and private an easy and fast means to process, generate and exchange information. However, the proliferation of networked devices, internet services and the amount of data being generated frequently is enormous. This poses a major challenge, to the procurement cost of high performing computers and servers capable of processing and housing the big data. This called for the migration of organizational and/or institutional data upload to the cloud for highlevel of productivity at a low cost. Therefore, with high demand for cloud services and resources by users who migrated to the cloud, cloud computing systems have experienced an increase in outages or failures in real-time cloud computing environment and thereby affecting its reliability and availability. This paper proposes and simulates a system comprising four components: the user, task controller, fault detector and fault tolerance layers to mitigate the occurrence of fault combining checkpointing and replication techniques using cloud simulator (CloudSim).

Research on higher education distance education tends to focus on the technical aspects of distance teaching, with little focus on the personal components of teaching and learning. In this chapter, students are interviewed to identify whether they want a personal presence from their lecturers and if so, what this presence might look like in distance education. Conversely, lecturers are interviewed to determine what they personally bring of themselves when teaching in distance mode. Results indicate that many, but not all, distance students want their lecturers to be passionate about their subject, form relationships and be open and available. However, there were some students, albeit a minority, who wanted to focus solely on the subject. Other students were clear that even though they valued lecturers’ personal revelations, these needed to be directly related to subject materials. Similarly, distance lecturers suggest that while they do reveal aspects of their personality there are also boundaries as to how much they ‘give’ of themselves. A case study is presented that extends this discussion and provides one approach, through the use of technology, for taking the ‘distance’ out of distance teaching.

Cost reduction for hosted and managed services is one of the key promises of Cloud Computing. Healthcare is one such example of managed services that can greatly benefit by a Cloud offering. However, there are many research challenges that need to be addressed before one can deliver a mature service. This chapter provides a summary of research activities in a variety of healthcare-related Cloud initiatives. The authors highlight the key areas of ongoing research and describe others that require attention. The analysis and observations can be useful to healthcare Cloud professionals and can motivate interested researchers to initiate new efforts for better healthcare services deployed on the Cloud.
