12 male alcoholism counsellors and 12 male late stage alcoholic patients responded to a 5-item questionnaire consisting of 3 items chosen from the Wallach and Kogan Choice Dilemmas questionnaire and 2 items constructed to represent dilemmas concerning alcohol. Ss indicated the lowest probability of success they would accept to take the risky alternative, which was clearly the more desirable choice. Results of a 2 × 5 analysis of variance indicated that alcoholics were more conservative in the probabilities they would accept to take the risky alternative, than were the counsellors. Furthermore, the items differed significantly from each other.

This is a quantitative study of imagery in ninety-six undergraduates, addressing the problem of individual differences in the characteristics of mental imagery workspaces. A 20-item questionnaire embodying nine characteristics of mental imagery workspaces was administered to seventy-eight females and twenty males. Item analysis employed an SPSS computer statistical package, including: 1) frequency distribution for each item and 2) analysis of variance using F tests for the variable of gender. ANOVA by gender disclosed statistically significant higher frequency of mental imagery workspaces reported within the thinking of males than of females. Characteristics of imagery reported by subjects include presence or absence of mental imagery, color, black and white, movement, images of numerals, ability to control the onset and erasure of the mental imagery workspace and use of imagery to do mathematics. Reliability analysis for the sum of all items on the questionnaire developed by the researcher produced a coefficient Alpha of .743. Main finding is that there are statistically significant differences among individuals in the characteristics of their mental imagery, with males reporting significantly greater frequency of imagery workspaces.

A 15-item questionnaire for assessment of stress was applied on a sample of 332 students (age from 19 to 27, 184 males and 148 females). It has been found that over 40% of students have elevated stress levels. The empirical results significantly deviated from the normal distribution. Two groups of participants stood out; the greater group had very elevated levels of stress, while the smaller group had very low average values. When answering questions related to stress, respondents evaluated three elements of lifestyle: the quantity and quality of everyday physical activity, subjective feeling of health and regularity of health checks. Results show that students are not active enough physically and that they rarely check their health. The analysis of variance showed that the highest level of stress is present in students who rated themselves as passive sports lovers, while athletes, amateurs and unexpectedly those who are anti-sports expressed significantly lower levels of stress. Significantly higher levels of stress were present in students who rated their health as poor, while respondents who regularly check their health had the lowest level of stress. Men had higher levels of stress than women.

Abstract. Background: Congenital venous malformations are frequently treated with sclerotherapy. Primary treatment goal is to control the often size-related symptoms. Functional impairment and aesthetical aspects as well as satisfaction have rarely been evaluated. Patients and methods: Medical records of patients who underwent sclerotherapy of spongiform venous malformations were reviewed and included in this retrospective study. The outcome of sclerotherapy as self-reported by patients was assessed in a 21 item questionnaire. Results: Questionnaires were sent to 166 patients with a total of 327 procedures. Seventy-seven patients (48 %) with a total of 159 procedures (50 %) responded to the survey. Fifty-seven percent of patients were male. The age ranged from 1 to 38.1 years with a median age of 16.4 years. The lower extremities were the most common treated area. Limitations caused by the venous malformation improved in the majority of patients (e.g. pain improvement 87 %, improvement of swelling 83 %) but also worsening of symptoms occurred in a minority of cases. Seventy-seven per cent would undergo sclerotherapy again. Conclusions: Sclerotherapy for treatment of venous malformations results in significant reduction of symptoms. Multiple treatments are often needed, but patients are willing to undergo them.
