AbstractA very important problem in designing of controlling systems is to choose the right type of architecture of controller. And it is always a compromise between accuracy, difficulty in setting up, technical complexity and cost, expandability, flexibility and so on. In this paper, multipurpose adaptive controller with implementation of artificial neural network is offered as an answer to a wide range of tasks related to regulation. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated by the example of an adaptive thermostat. It also compares its capabilities with those of classic PID controller. The core of this approach is the use of an artificial neural network capable of predicting the behaviour of controlled object within its known range of parameters. Since such a network, being trained, is a model of a regulated system with arbitrary precision, it can be analysed to make optimal management decisions at the moment or in a number of steps. Network learning algorithm is backpropagation and its modified version is used to analyse an already trained network in order to find the optimal solution for the regulator. Software implementation, such as graphical user interface, routines related to neural network and many other, is done using Java programming language and Processing open-source integrated development environment.

The compressive deformation experiments of 2124-T851 aluminum alloy were carried out over a wide range of temperature and strain rate. An artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed for the analysis and simulation of the correlation between the flow behaviors of hot compressed 2124-T851 aluminum alloy and working conditions. The input parameters of the model consist of strain rate, forming temperature and deformation degree whereas flow stress is the output. A three layer feed-forward network with 15 neurons in a single hidden layer and back propagation (BP) learning algorithm has been employed. Good performance of the ANN model is achieved. The predicted results are consistent with what is expected from fundamental theory of hot compression deformation, which indicates that the excellent capability of the developed ANN model to predict the flow stress level, the strain hardening and flow softening stages is well evidenced.

In this article, a novel real-time artificial neural network–based adaptable switching dynamic controller is developed and practically implemented. It will be used for real-time control of two-wheeled balance robot which can balance itself upright position on different surfaces. In order to examine the efficiency of the proposed controller, a two-wheeled mobile balance robot is designed and a test platform for experimental setup is made for balance problem on different surfaces. In a developed adaptive controller algorithm which is capable to adapt different surfaces, mean absolute target angle deviation error, mean absolute target displacement deviation error and mean absolute controller output data are employed for surface estimation by using artificial neural network. In a designed two-wheeled mobile balance robot system, robot tilt angle is estimated via Kalman filter from accelerometer and gyroscope sensor signals. Furthermore, a visual robot control interface is developed in C++ software development environment so that robot controller parameters can be changed as desired. In addition, robot balance angle, linear displacement and controller output can be observed online on personal computer. According to the real-time experimental results, the proposed novel type controller gives more effective results than the classic ones.

AbstractAs a result of heterogeneity nature of soils and variation in its hydraulic conductivity over several orders of magnitude for various soil types from fine-grained to coarse-grained soils, predictive methods to estimate hydraulic conductivity of soils from properties considered more easily obtainable have now been given an appropriate consideration. This study evaluates the performance of artificial neural network (ANN) being one of the popular computational intelligence techniques in predicting hydraulic conductivity of wide range of soil types and compared with the traditional multiple linear regression (MLR). ANN and MLR models were developed using six input variables. Results revealed that only three input variables were statistically significant in MLR model development. Performance evaluations of the developed models using determination coefficient and mean square error show that the prediction capability of ANN is far better than MLR. In addition, comparative study with available existing models shows that the developed ANN and MLR in this study performed relatively better.

Four distinct regimes were found existent (namely sliding bed, saltation, heterogeneous suspension and homogeneous suspension) in slurry flow in pipeline depending upon the average velocity of flow. In the literature, few numbers of correlations has been proposed for identification of these regimes in slurry pipelines. Regime identification is important for slurry pipeline design as they are the prerequisite to apply different pressure drop correlation in different regime. However, available correlations fail to predict the regime over a wide range of conditions. Based on a databank of around 800 measurements collected from the open literature, a method has been proposed to identify the regime using artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. The method incorporates hybrid artificial neural network and genetic algorithm technique (ANN-GA) for efficient tuning of ANN meta parameters. Statistical analysis showed that the proposed method has an average misclassification error of 0.03%. A comparison with selected correlations in the literature showed that the developed ANN-GA method noticeably improved prediction of regime over a wide range of operating conditions, physical properties, and pipe diameters.

Abstract The primary function of the Wheatstone bridge is to measure an unknown resistance. The elements of this well-known measurement circuit will take on different values depending upon the range and accuracy required for a particular application. The Taguchi approach to parameter design is used to select values for the measurement circuit elements so as to reduce measurement error. Next we introduce the use of an artificial neural network to extrapolate limited experimental results to predict system response over a wide range of applications. This approach can be employed for on-line quality control of the manufacture of such device.

Machine odor detection has developed into an important aspect of our lives with various applications of it. From detecting food spoilage to diagnosis of diseases, it has been developed and tested in various fields and industries for specific purposes. This project, artificial-neural-network-based electronic nose (ANNeNose), is a machine-learning-based e-nose system that has been developed for detection of various types of odors for a general purpose. The system can be trained on any odor using various e-nose sensor types. It uses artificial neural network as its machine learning algorithm along with an OMX-GR semiconductor gas sensor for collecting odor data. The system was trained and tested with five different types of odors collected through a standard data collection method and then purified, which in turn had a result varying from 93% to 100% accuracy.

Weather information has an important role in human life in various fields, such as agriculture, marine, and aviation. The accurate weather forecasts are needed in order to improve the performance of various fields. In this study, use artificial neural network method with backpropagation learning algorithm to create a model of weather forecasting in the area of ??South Bali. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the number of neurons in the hidden layer and to determine the level of accuracy of the method of artificial neural network with backpropagation learning algorithm in weather forecast models. Weather forecast models in this study use input of the factors that influence the weather, namely air temperature, dew point, wind speed, visibility, and barometric pressure. The results of testing the network with a different number of neurons in the hidden layer of artificial neural network method with backpropagation learning algorithms show that the increase in the number of neurons in the hidden layer is not directly proportional to the value of the accuracy of the weather forecasts, the increase in the number of neurons in the hidden layer does not necessarily increase or decrease value accuracy of weather forecasts we obtain the best accuracy rate of 51.6129% on a network model with three neurons in the hidden layer.

Artificial neural network surrogate modeling with its economic computational consumption and accurate generalization capabilities offers a feasible approach to aerodynamic design in the field of rapid investigation of design space and optimal solution searching. This paper reviews the basic principle of artificial neural network surrogate modeling in terms of data treatment and configuration setup. A discussion of artificial neural network surrogate modeling is held on different objectives in aerodynamic design applications, various patterns of realization via cutting-edge data technique in numerous optimizations, selection of network topology and types, and other measures for improving modeling. Then, new frontiers of modern artificial neural network surrogate modeling are reviewed with regard to exploiting the hidden information for bringing new perspectives to optimization by exploring new data form and patterns, e.g. quick provision of candidates of better aerodynamic performance via accumulated database instead of random seeding, and envisions of more physical understanding being injected to the data manipulation.
