AbstractThin films of titanium oxides, titanium oxynitrides and titanium nitrides were deposited on glass substrates by the methods of direct current (DC) and pulsed magnetron sputtering and cathodic arc evaporation. Phase analysis of the deposited films by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed the presence of phases with various Ti oxidative states, which indicated a high concentration of oxygen vacancies. The films morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Investigations of the films wettability, either with water or ethylene glycol, showed that it depends directly on the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The wettability mechanism was particularly discussed.

The novel technology of multilayer coating deposition combining electric-spark alloying (ESA), pulsed arc evaporation (PAE), and magnetron sputtering (MS) in one vacuum process is presented. Layers can be deposited using a single electrode material at operating pressures from 0,1 Pa to atmospheric pressure. The lower ESA layer provides increased substrate toughness, perfect adhesion and a relatively high (up to 100 μm) coating thickness. The upper PAE or MS layer up to 10 μm in thickness provides high mechanical and tribological characteristics. The technology of double-layer PAE–ESA and MS–ESA coating deposition was tested on substrates made of structural and tool steels, titanium alloys using electrodes of cemented carbides (WC–Co, TiCNiAl) and carbon (low-porous graphite).

Physicochemical properties of thin films on the base of titanium oxides, obtained by a cathodic arc evaporation on the surface of glass substrate are analysed in details. The analysis of these films was made by using XRD, FTIR, SEM, XPS analysis and ellipsometry. On the basis of these analyses, particularly analysis obtained by XPS, the oxidative state Ti and corresponding phases are determined through various film layers from the surface to the substrate. The depth of the various levels and their extinction coefficients and refractory indexes are estimated by ellipsometry.

Zirconium nitrides (ZrN) coatings have shown better quality in comparison to titanium nitrides (TiN) ones regarding the application in the mechanical processing of aluminum and titanium alloys. This work presents the results from investigation on properties of ZrN-based coatings intended for industrial application. The ZrN and ZrTiN hard coatings in a thickness of (3 5) m were obtained on stainless steel substrates by cathodic arc evaporation method. The coating hardness in the range of 25-32 GPa was evaluated using the Vickers measurement technique. The coating properties were studied in relation to the surface morphology by Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analyses showed that the number and size of the macroparticles decrease when N2 pressure increases in the deposition chamber. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was performed to identify the crystallographic structure, preferred orientation and stress of the ZrN coatings.
