SEM and stereoscope microscope observations on the seeds of some Ornithogalum (Hyacinthaceae) species

AbstractThe paper presents the results of the study on seed morphology of four following Ornithogalum species: O. boucheanum Asch., O. nutans L., O. pyrenaicum L., and O. umbellatum L. Several macro-and micro-morphological characters were observed using stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. Differences were found especially in micromorphological characters of the seed surface, the shape of raphe and micropylar pole. These characters can be used as an additional taxonomic criterion at specific level for this genus. Only the seeds of O. boucheanum and O. nutans — two closely related and morphologically very similar species are practically undistinguished.

Seed morphology of 12 Iranian endemic and subendemic species of Veronica was studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Seven qualitative and quantitative characters were measured using SEM micrographs and stereomicroscopy. The seed shape of most species is ovate and plano-convex. The size of seeds ranges from 1.25 x 0.75 mm in V. khorassanica to 2.5 x 1.75 mm in V. viscosa Boiss. The ornamentation of seed coat is reticulate-verrucate in V. khorassanica, V. czerniakowskiana, V. mazanderanae and V. rubrifolia, reticulate-rugate in V. acrotheca, V. aucheri, V. viscosa and V. intercedens, rugose in V. microcarpa, V. chionantha and V. rechingeri, and reticulate-porate in V. gaubae. The testa cells are polygonal in ten species and irregular in two species. Micromorphological characters of seeds are useful in specific and subspecific delimitations of Iranian Veronica.

The present paper is the first scanning electron microscope (SEM) description of a protonymphon larva of an Ammotheidae. The morphology of the first larval instar ofAchelia assimilisis described in detail and illustrated for the first time. The morphological characters are compared to previous larval descriptions of other pycnogonid species. The larvae are integrated into Bain's classification of larval types within the pycnogonids (Bain, 2003a) as a ‘typical protonymphon’. Larvae were obtained from ovigerous males, caught in Punta Huinay, Huinay, Chile and analysed with light microscope and SEM. Descriptions of pycnogonid protonymphons at a species-specific level in the future will contribute to a deeper understanding of larval pycnogonid taxonomy at the level of differential diagnoses.

The aim of this study was to document the taxonomical, morphological, anatomical, palynological and cytological characters, and geographical distribution of endemic Aubrieta pinardii Boiss. (Brassicaceae) from Turkey. The description of the taxon was revised as a consequence of comprehensive assessments of many specimens. The surface pictures belonging to seed and pollen of the taxon were obtained by Scanning Electron Microscope. The seed surface ornamentation was rugose. The pollen was radially and isopolar and prolate in forms, with polar axes of 19.52 ± 0.29 μm and equatorial axes of 13.04 ± 0.22 μm, with oval outlines in the equatorial axes, and elliptical in the polar axes. They were three–colpate and colpus sizes varied between 12.98 μm and 13.29 μm in length, and between 1.33 and 2.09 μm in width. Also, the anatomical structures of the root, stem and leaf of species were studied. In cytological studies, the chromosome number of species was found as 2n = 16 (x =8). This was the first work including taxonomical, morphological (macro and micro), anatomical and cytological data of endemic Aubrieta pinardii. Bangladesh J.Plant Taxon. 27(1): 27-35, 2020 (June)

We described the achenes of 21 species of the genus Scleria reported in Costa Rica using 16 morphological characters and developed a key based only on achene characteristics. Specimens deposited in herbaria in Costa Rica were analyzed. We observed the achenes using a stereoscope and light microscope and took digital images that were used to measure the achenes. Besides, the achenes were observed using a Scanning Electron Microscope. A cluster analysis using achene characteristics was performed in order to know which species are morphologically similar. The intra-specific variation of the characteristics analyzed in the achenes studied is very small for all the species. Using characteristics of the achene, we could differentiate species among four of the five traditional sections of the genus used to classify the species: Hypoporum, Ophryoscleria, Schizolepis and Scleria. The key allows differentiating among 21 species of the genus Scleria previously reported in Costa Rica using only achenes. Besides the key, we prepared an illustrative guide for the genus using pictures taken with SEM and a stereoscope. The descriptions offer better information about the species that grow in Costa Rica.

The surface patterns of seeds of 88 species of Goodenia and related genera were examined under scanning electron microscope and light microscope. With use of sections as well, the patterns were resolved into six attributes of which each was present in one of at least two states. Certain combinations of states of attributes are used to define terms which are used for purposes of taxonomic description. Six such terms are defined in this way. The results indicate that previous taxonomic arrangements are unsatisfactory. A brief commentary on possible evolutionary trends is provided and the relationships of the various satellite genera to Goodenia are discussed.

Alopecosa volubilis n. sp. is described from Korea and is differentiated from other species in Alopecosa Simon, 1885 by morphological characteristics, such as three retromarginal teeth of chelicera, smaller body size, and the presence of a distinct tip of the median apophysis. The pedipalpal sclerites and somatic characters of two similar species, A. moriutii Tanaka, 1985 and A. hokkaidensis Tanaka, 1985, are compared with those of the new species. An illustration of the body and scanning electron microscope (SEM) pictures of the pedipalpal organ are provided.

Micromorphological characters of achenes in seven taxa of Turkish Achillea L. (Asteraceae) were investigated using stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Some morphological descriptions of achenes were given for each species. A.biserrata Bieb. has the biggest (0.69±0.092 x 2.01±0.252 mm) and A. grandiflora Friv. has the smallest (0.30±0.018 x 1.12±0.058 mm) achenes. The achenes are oblong-lanceolate in A.biserrata and A. teretifolia Willd. and they are oblong in the remaining taxa. In surface sculpturing, the ornamentation and slime cell distribution varied among the taxa. However, A. biebersteinii Afan. has distinct slime cells forming groups scattered over the achene surface. Leaf epidermal studies, pollen and seed morphology of two species of Rauvolfia i.e. R. serpentina and R. tetraphylla were studied using compound and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) to facilitate the correct identification and authentication of these significant crude drugs and also as an aid to plant systematics. The microscopic and SEM studies of these species showed significant differences in the morphology of the analyzed parts.

Morphological characters and scanning electron microscope images of the larvae of Amphipsyche meridiana and A. gratiosa are given. Pupal identifications are based on genitalic features in common with described adults, and larvae were associated with the pupae based on residual larval sclerites captured in the pupal case. Herein, the final larval instar is described, diagnosed, and photographed for each species.
