AbstractThis article presents the results of tests on the energy properties of sedimentary rocks in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The rocks were tested both in an air-dry state and in a water saturation state. Samples of sedimentary rocks were collected from boreholes drilled in the underground workings of coal mines located within the area of the city of Jastrzębie, in the areas of the Chwałowice Trough and Rybnik Trough (south-western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin) and in the Main Trough. Influence of saturation condition on the values of the tested energy parameters was observed. The values of elastic energy and dissipated energy obtained for the samples tested in water saturation were lower compared to the values obtained for samples tested in air-dry state. As observed, an increase in the values of the given types of specific energy corresponds to an increase in the uniaxial compression strength in air-dry state and in water saturation state. Results of the tests are original and they can be applied while analysing the possibility of the occurrence of some dynamic phenomena and hazards in mine workings in Carboniferous rock mass in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, caused by mining operations.

The backhoe hydraulic shovels (backhoes) have been widely used in open-pit mining operations in the Kuznetsk coal basin since the early 2000s. Now their number is growing every year, both because new operations begin on new sites, and because of the backhoe advantages. However, up to now parameters of their operation, more particularly the parameters of the face blocks, are often taken according to the actual data, i.e. based on the accumulated experience of the mining companies, and are not calculated using the approved scientifically validated methods. In the given article the authors give some preconditions for creation of a uniform methodology to calculate parameters of the face blocks depending on mining-geological and miningtechnical conditions. It is noted that the manufacturers of excavation equipment quote the data corresponding to the maximum possible parameters of the equipment operation, in particular the height of the excavated layer, as a result of which it is rather difficult to apply this in practice. Preliminary conclusions about the need to take into account the diversity of the above conditions and their interrelation with the parameters of a particular model of the excavation and loading equipment have been made.

Here in the study results of the sedimentary rocks water saturation effect on the main parameters of anchoring of mine workings: resistance, density and installation step of the support. A series of tests of rock samples with different intervals of their water saturation has been produced. It has been established that water saturation leads to a significant change in the strength properties of sedimentary rocks, depending on their petrographic composition and the period of exposure to moisture. The relation between the degree of water saturation and a decrease in the uniaxial compression strength, between the strength of a dry sample and its tendency to decrease in strength properties under the influence of moisture, between the period of exposure to moisture and decrease in strength properties has been established. The results of the study will allow to more accurately classify the rocks of the roof according to the factors of collapse and stability, which has a significant impact on the calculation of the anchoring parameters of mine workings in water-saturated zones.

Abstract The results of investigation of the associated rocks with the Saddle Beds Coals Seams from Chwałowice Trough were presented in this article. The results of researches show that sandstones and mudstones dominate in the investigating profile. Claystones are situated mainly in ceilings and floors of coal seams. Grains of sandstones include mainly quartz, feldspars, micas and also quartzite’s and gneiss’s fragments. It is also possible to observe small grains of heavy minerals. Some of sandstones present bad compactness and are destroyed during transportation. This feature is connected with presence of little quantity of cement, especially in medium grained sandstones, which include more matrix than typical cement. The cement is built mainly of clay minerals, kaolinite and illite, carbonates and chalcedony but X-ray diffraction confirmed also the presence of halite in the cement of investigated sandstones. Mudstones and claystones are composed mainly of clay minerals. It’s also possible to find quartz and micas there. Higher amounts of quartz and micas are possible to find rather in mudstones. The associated rocks with the Saddle Beds Coal Seams from Chwałowice Trough include also organic matter.
