Abstract The article presents the methodology of introducing automatic carbon fiber panel cutting technologies at the Composite Testing Laboratory of the Institute of Aviation. It describes the process of implementing the new cutting technology which boosts the efficiency of preparing composite samples for strength testing, with the requirements applicable to edge smoothness and dimension tolerances taken into consideration. It also reviews the literature concerned with three most popular composite material cutting methods: laser cutting, abrasive water jet cutting and machining, presenting the strong and the weak points of each one of them. After selecting the machining technology relying on a disc, cutting tests have been performed. Cutting discs coated with diamond particles, and carbon fiber panels were used during the tests. The tests were performed with the use of the INFOTEC CNC machine, with an adapter enabling the installation of cutting discs with the maximum diameter of 150 mm.

In order to make the switch valve in abrasive-liquid device of premixed abrasive water jet cutting system work normally, the sealing bush which ensures the pressure constant and the switch smooth is needed. The structure, material and craft of the switch valve sealing bush are studied in this paper. The different weight content of short glass fiber reinforced nylon is tested in the environment of no lubricant, water lubricant and oil lubricant. The result shows that in oil lubricant environment, the 33% weight content of short glass fiber reinforced nylon composites have the best capabilities and the least resistance of friction. The experimental result proves that the sealing bush made by the prepared short glass fiber reinforced nylon composites can meet the require of the premixed abrasive water jet cutting system, according to which the sealing bush is producted and assembled to the abrasive-liquid device.

Combining with the electron microscope analysis of the morphology of incision, the mechanism of abrasive water jet cutting metal materials was carried out to explore, for the rational selection of abrasive jet cutting parameters, to extend its application to provide the basis. Study shows that the abrasive water jet cutting metal materials, the material damage mechanism is mainly to yield deformation and failure and shear of grinding damage, grooving formation is mainly caused by falling impact deformation and furrows grinding.

In this paper, carbon fiber reinforced resin matrix composites were produced by stacking eight pieces of carbon fiber woven plain fabric and subjected to accelerated ageing. Accelerated ageing was carried out in oven at 180°C for three different time intervals (60 hours, 120 hours and 180 hours). The influence of different ageing time intervals at 180°C on tensile properties of laminated composites was examined, compared with the composites without aging. The appearance and damage forms of these laminated composites were investigated. The results revealed that the tensile strength of the laminates declined significantly after long term accelerated aging at 180°C. The average tensile strengths of composite samples aged 60 hours, 120 hours, and 180 hours period of time at 180°C are 80.36%, 79.82%, 76.57% of average tensile strength of composite samples without aging, respectively. The high temperature accelerated aging makes the resin macromolecular structure in the composites changed, and then the adhesive force between fiber bundles and resin declines rapidly which result in the tensile strength of composites aged decrease. This research provides a useful reference for long term durability of laminated/epoxy resin composites.

The article discusses devices for fixing sheet metal blanks from PCM: a perforated vacuum table, its design features, advantages and disadvantages. Based on these data, the upper part of the vacuum table was made for cutting samples for Iosipescu tests and dielectric tests. The article describes various types of tools for PCM processing and an experiment on the wear resistance of a diamond-like coated rasp cutter when milling carbon fiber reinforced plastic, carried out by foreign researchers.

In this paper research elements regarding the effect of water pressure variation on cut surfaces quality are presented in the field of abrasive water jet cutting of materials hard to process by machining such as austenitic stainless steels, in this case with a thickness of 20 mm. Selection of the optimal cutting process based on technical and economic criteria takes into consideration the type and thickness of the targeted material and also the physical and geometrical quality requirements. The present paper contains experimental research results regarding abrasive water jet cutting of austenitic stainless steel EN 1.4306 (ASTM 304 L) at different values of water pressure. The abrasive material used is Garnet with particle granulation 80 Mesh. By making roughness measurements and hardness examinations of the cut surface an evaluation will be made of the surface quality defining the optimal pressure values.
