Terompong Basic Tone Synthesis with Frequency Modulation Method

Terompong is a type of gamelan in Bali Province. This gamelan is commonly used in traditional ceremonies in Bali, especially the Dewa Yadnya and Pitra Yadnya. The terompong are striking instruments, where the bat is made of wood. The terompong is also a two-octave musical instrument composed of 10-12 small metal gong blocks. The gong blocks are arranged parallel, which makes the gong difficult to carry and has to stay somewhere if someone want to play. Of course, with this situation people find it difficult to learn the terompong because they are quite large and heavy. This problem could be solved by replace the original terompong with synthetic terompong. The synthesis referred here the synthesis of sound. In performing sound synthesis, the method used is Frequency Modulation (FM). The result of the synthesis carried out where the difference between fundamental frequency of the original tone and the synthesis tone is almost close to zero. The sound produced almost follows the original sound, but it can't follow the sound of metal being hit with a wooden club.

Gamelan bali is one aspect of the art highly favored by both domestik and foreign tourists. One type of popular typical Balinese gamelan is Rindik. Rindik is one of Balinese traditional musical instrument made of bamboo. Now days, the number of foreign culture and today’s lifestyle give some impacts on the declining interest of Balinese to interact with this type of conventional gamelan. The younger generation is now more inclined to like devices which are played through electronics/software component. To increase public interest towards traditional gamelan bali especially rindik we need a breakthrough to digitize gamelan rindik and presenting it in the form of rindik software application. Today's advanced technology has made a way to digitize a wide range of instruments including rindik into computerized form. For example we can use frequency modulation as a voice synthesis technique. This method was developed by researchers in the field of sound synthesis. In this research, we have done the sound synthesis process of rindik instrument into digital form using frequency modulation. The best results were obtained through the synthesis comparison of carrier signal frequency and modulator is 1:7. Outcomes of this research is a digitizing result which is  presented in the form of a gamelan rindik package on desktop based software application.

When a parallel robot is equipped with kinematic redundancy, it has sufficient capabilities of natural frequency modulation through adjusting geometric configuration. To reduce resonance of a mechanism, this paper investigates the natural frequency modulation of a kinematically redundant planar parallel robot. A double-threshold searching method is proposed for controlling the inverse kinematics solution and keeping the natural frequencies away from the excitation frequency. The effectiveness of modulating the natural frequencies is demonstrated by comparing it with a non-modulation method. The simulation results indicate that, in all directions, the responses are coupled, and every order should be taken into consideration during natural frequency modulation. Compared to the non-modulation method, the proposed method can reduce the resonance amplitude to a certain extent, and the effect of vibration suppression is remarkable.

The most concerns in the inverter's design are about, how to make the output voltage of the inverter sinusoidal at the desired fundamental frequency with low total harmonic distortion (THD). This paper presents a design and implementation of single-phase five-level inverter which is powered by single dc source and based on T-type multi-level inverters construction. The proposed inverter is built mainly by six IGBTs and two diodes. The used modulation technique is based on using two triangular carriers at 2000 Hz frequency and shifted by phase opposition disposition (POD) method. The carriers are made slightly unbalanced with their amplitudes. The over-modulation method is also introduced in the design to get the lowest possible THD effect without using filters. The inverter is simulated by MATLAB SIMULINK, implemented practically, and tested with the help of LabVIEW software.

This article explores techniques for synthesizing resonant sounds using the principle of nonlinear distortion. These methods can be grouped under the heading of “subtractive synthesis without filters,” the case for which has been made in the literature. Starting with a simple resonator model, this article looks at how the source-modifier arrangement can be reconstructed as a heterodyne structure made of a sinusoidal carrier and a complex modulator. From this, we examine how the modulator signal can be created with nonlinear distortion methods, looking at the classic case of phase-aligned formant synthesis and then our own modified frequency-modulation technique. The article concludes with some application examples of this sound-synthesis principle.
