With the development of high density, multi-functions, miniaturization and multi-layer on printed circuit board (PCB) design, great challenges have been presented to the miniaturization of drilling on PCB. In order to meet the hole precision, quality and improve the performance, efficiency of mechanical drilling, further research should be done on the cutting state. Kistler high-precision micro-force platform was used in this paper to test and analyze the cutting force, investigate the general laws of micro drilling, and optimize the parameters for HANS PCB drilling machine. Thereby, to improve the efficiency and precision of the drilling, range of processing, and increasing market competitiveness.

The implementation of a printed circuit board (PCB) drilling machine using recyclable materials and computer-aided control is presented. A mechanical system using a DC motor for movement on the X and Y axes, and a transmission mechanism by belts, pulleys, and a worm screw was made. For the Z axis, a mechanism based on a worm screw, nuts, and a stepper motor was implemented. The main board has two microcontrollers communicating in a master-slave configuration via a serial protocol. A real-time operating system (OSA) was implemented to optimize the data flow to the computer using the USB protocol, for communication with the slave microcontroller, positioning the Cartesian axes, and control the motors. The slave is responsible for monitoring the status of the encoders and limit switches, as well as the information delivery to the master. A Matlab-based user interface was developed to determine the coordinates of the holes to be drilled by processing a jpg image. This also allows the user to control the DC motors using PWM signals via configurable parameters of PID controllers. The end result is a drilling machine which able to operate both manually and via a computer, for drilling PCBs of a maximum size of 24 × 40 cm.

The solid modeling of one type of printed circuit board NC drilling machine is built by Pro/Engineer, and ANSYS is applied for modal analysis. In this paper, the key influential factors of the structure of the drilling machine are found out, the structure is improved and two prioritization schemes are proposed. After analyzing the primary structure and the two optimized structures of the machine tool bed and then comparing the analysis results, the optimal scheme is proposed. The results show that the optimization improves the dynamic property and the machining precision of the drilling machine.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study and obtain the influence of resin and filler properties of printed circuit board (PCB) on the drilling force during micro drilling. Design/methodology/approach Experiments were carried out to study the influence of PCB on micro-hole drilling force under high spindle speed. A drilling force measurement system was applied, and then, the influence of resin and filler properties of PCBs on the force was analyzed. The proportion of resin and filler in the PCB was defined as four levels, and the influence of PCBs based on the drilling force measurement was summarized. Findings The drilling force decreased with the decrease in the feed rate, and lower filler (16-30 per cent) and average resin (31-50 per cent) would have a positive impact on the drilling force. At the same time, the size of uniform and fine fillers would help to reduce the drilling force. Originality/value The drilling force measurement system was applied, and the influence of PCBs on force was analyzed, which could provide a reference value on the optimization of the drilling force during micro drilling.

The target of this paper is to design a high speed drilling machine suitable for printed circuit board with micro-hole of 0.1 mm diameter, which has drilling force measuring function and rapid change spindle function. Therefore, in this paper, the main principles of module partition for drilling machine were analyzed. Module partition was conducted for high speed drilling machine of Printed Circuit Board (PCB), as well as using modular components combine PCB high speed drilling machine. Then, performance testing and simulation of dynamic modeling were carried out on the modular PCB high speed drilling machine. The results show that the modular PCB high speed drilling machine has good performance, enough stiffness, better stability and meeting the design requirements. The modular partition laid the foundation for further study on the module creation and reconfiguration of PCB drilling machine.
