Although the social and environmental effects of global business are not fresh, there have been increased concerns in recent years as a result of urgent global issues such as climate change and deprivation. In terms of their regional reach and operations, multinational corporations are perceived as having a particular role, since they address a variety of concerns, stakeholders and societal structures, in both home and host countries. They are regarded continuously as having the capacity to be not only part of the issue but also potentially part of the remedy and have been illustrated in their research interests in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and global business' sustainable development implications. However, there was no formal research and inclusion in the literature. This paper discusses how these topics have been explored in IB work and describe specific knowledge differences and solutions. It often introduces recent experiments that yield insightful findings that lead to exciting areas for more study.

The processes accompanying state social policy over recent decades as well as their contradictory impact on the sustainable development of the society are one of the fundamental problems of our time. Nowadays, there are still no clear solutions to the debate how to alleviate some of the fundamental problems like environmental pollution, poverty, aged population, income inequality, social exclusion, etc. This chapter aims to show how multinational corporations (MNCs) take the role to solve these issues following some corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies. In this way, they offer a means by which the current CSR model can be used more effectively to achieve these sustainable development targets. The structure of the chapter is organized as follows: Section 2 presents an evolution while Section 3 provides a summary of some contemporary views of CSR. Section 4 describes the way in which CSR is used as a sustainable development tool.

With a long history, large population, rapid economic growth, and major social transformation in recent years and the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative, China has increasingly become an important global player. However, the negative social and environmental consequences of such a fast and extensive economic expansion are becoming significant. A series of measures have been taken to tackle the current problems faced by the country, including the issuing of new laws and regulations, and the most recent is China’s ban on plastic waste imports. However, there is a significant gap between Chinese laws and their implementation. Therefore, more people are putting their hope in a combination of legislation and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to help address the current social and environmental problems faced by the country. This paper discusses the drivers of CSR in China and compares them to the drivers of CSR in the West. The paper also explores the extent to which CSR can make a contribution to solving the sustainable development challenges faced by China and discusses possible solutions if the current CSR pattern fails. Finally, the paper makes suggestions for future research on CSR in China.

The challenges generated by climate change have led to a greater involvement of companies in promoting the principles of sustainable development, one of the tools used being social responsibility programs. International organizations have launched various initiatives or principles to support companies in this complex process of transition to the green economy. The authors focused their analysis on the involvement of stock exchanges in the process of promotion of corporate social responsibility. The objective of this chapter is to identify the main tools used by stock exchanges in order to model the behavior of listed companies. In particular, the activity of the Bucharest Stock Exchange was analyzed. Even if it is an emerging market, the efforts made by this stock exchange and the results obtained can be used as a benchmark by stock exchanges in the region.

There are vital issues affecting our planet including climate change, inequality, and political freedom, and publishers have produced many books and articles on these topics. Companies are not obliged to consider the externalities of their operations, but most now recognize they cannot be ignored. Who are the stakeholders of a publisher? What responsibility do publishers have towards society? How sustainable for the planet is the business model of publishing? Since publishing is a global business, how broadly should we think about the impact of the operations of companies? Should not publishers produce books that match the interests of a population that is diversified by, for example, gender and ethnicity? Examination of corporate social responsibility clarifies the role of the publisher in an age of open content and self-publishing.

An increasing number of organizations are focusing not only on creating value but also on ethical, social, and environmental perspectives. Traditionally, organizations mostly encompassed corporate social responsibility as their activities only in an economically favorable situation. However, corporate social responsibility can be incorporated in organizations with human resource management as a strategic process to recover and sustain the organization's development. Therefore, the study aims to analyze the relation between corporate social responsibility and human resource management and the role of human resource practices with corporate social responsibility in organizational development. From this standpoint, this study provides a systematic review of the concepts of corporate social responsibility, the relation between corporate social responsibility and human resource management, and their effect on the organization's success. Fifty-six articles published during 2004–2020 are selected for review from a descriptive and content perspective to propose a future research direction on a selected topic. The findings of the reviewed literature indicated that a triple bottom line (economic, social, and environmental) attainment is essentially a high-level management-driven operation in the absence of employee participation. Besides, this paper described the importance of corporate social responsibility, the linkage between human resource and corporate social responsibility in the organization, and promoting corporate social responsibility to the organizations and various stakeholders. Finally, this study asserted the connection between these two concepts and inquired management to treat the link as a strategic business decision to control the organization's human capital.

Purpose Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained global prominence in recent years. This is because businesses have seen the need to consider the interests of stakeholders not only to enhance their corporate image but also to live good neighbourly lives with the communities in which they operate. The purpose of this paper is to examine the value of engaging stakeholders and recommend multinational corporations not to take over the governance of countries in which they operate as a result of their financial muscle but to play complementary roles to help in the development of those countries. Although CSR is no longer new in Africa according to recent studies, it is suffering from identity crisis, as it has been used generally and severally to refer to different issues. This conceptual paper discusses the notion of CSR practice in Africa and the major issues and debates around it. It looks at the role of government and civil society organisations that are at the forefront playing watchdog and vigilante roles for the benefit of the society. Design/methodology/approach This is a conceptual paper. Findings The paper argues that business and society cannot exist without working together and that responsible business is key to sustainable development. It traces the roots of CSR and the emergence of the concept. It advises that what is required in Africa is for the media and civil society organizations to play watchdog and vigilante roles in ensuring that businesses are socially responsible, accountable and transparent. If governments and businesses are transparent and accountable, then the citizens become the greatest beneficiary. The profit margins of businesses will also increase and there will be sustainable development. The paper also indicates that the concept of CSR is gaining grounds in Africa and is no longer new as indicated by previous studies. It recommends that Africa should have its own CSR programmes designed to fit into the African setting. The paper examines the major issues and debates on CSR and concludes that any attempt to introduce uniform laws to ensure responsible business operations universally will not work as situations differ from country to country. The overreliance on corporate entities, particularly Multinational corporations (MNCs) and transnational corporation (TNCs), for the direct development of African economies is not sustainable, as these corporate entities cannot continue to fulfil these obligations meant for the development of infrastructure and still be expected to provide basic amenities for communities under the guise of fulfilling CSR. This process of national development is unsustainable. Originality/value The paper recommends a multi-stakeholder approach in designing and implementing CSR programmes. The government, civil society, community and the company should collaborate and constantly have stakeholder engagements as that are the only way of attaining a win-win benefit. MNCs and TNCs should see the government and other stakeholders as partners in development and not lord it over them as a result of their financial muscle. It is recommended that more research work be done in CSR education in Africa. This is to enable business operators and communities understand the true meaning of CSR and to know that the concept goes beyond philanthropy or donations. It will also help them understand that the concept goes beyond community relations to include issues such as human rights, child labour, environmental governance and corporate tax among others.

In the current rapidly changing, complex and multi-faceted business context companies face a diverse range of challenges on a daily basis such as financial performance pressures combined with the increasing expectations from societies that companies act more responsibly with relation to social and environmental aspects. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable development (SD) are not new concepts and are some of the most widely recognized and used business concepts today. It seems that the implementation of both CSR and SD is needed in a modern and global business context. Although CSR and SD are regarded as different concepts, there is a clear overlap, interrelationship and interconnectedness between these concepts. It seems advantageous to at a practical level implement CSR and SD simultaneously as the tridimensional view of SD mimics the tridimensional view of CSR. It is acknowledged that although SD and CSR both include a tridimensional view and they are closely connected, there are different conceptual nuances. This paper provides an overview of the differences and similarities between CSR and SD and describes practical guidelines to implement CSR and SD simultaneously

The economic growth and social responsibility of the company have become hot topics of concern to society. Fulfilling a company’s obligations of social responsibility can establish a good corporate image and benefit the company’s long-term development. Tracking the research fronts in this field can help to understand the hotspots that scholars pay attention to and fill the gaps in the field. We used the scientometric analysis to explore corporate governance research from 1987 to 2020 based on the Web of Science (WoS) database. Our research shows that corporate social responsibility focus on topics such as sustainability, social responsibility, and shareholders, and financial performance will be more skewed towards financial crisis, company value, and other research. The main publications are the Journal of Business Ethics and Corporate Governance-An International Review. The increase in the number of publications and citations reflects the strong interest of scholars in this research area. In this area, the organizations of developed countries are dominant, especially the United States, and China has the largest number of funding agencies, suggests that the economic powers are paying more attention to the literature on economic management. However, corporate social performance articles are relatively small, and strengthening this area can become a future research direction. strengthening this area can become a future research direction.

Purpose: This paper presents aspects of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Implementation Success Model to guide CSR engagements. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative case methodology is used to investigate two CSR companies in Uganda. Semi-structured interviews with managers and stakeholders are conducted. Data triangulation includes reviewing CSR reports and documents, and visiting communities and CSR activities/projects mentioned in the case companies’ reports. Grounded theory guides the data analysis and aggregation. Findings: The findings culminate into a “CSR Implementation Success Model. ” Key aspects of CSR implementation success are identified as: (i) involvement of stakeholders and management (i.e., co-production) at the start and during every stage of CSR implementation; (ii) management of challenges and conflicts arising within/outside of the company itself; and (iii) feedback management or performance assessment—i.e., accountability via CSR communications and reporting. Stakeholder involvement and feedback management (accountability) are pivotal, though all three must be considered equally. Research limitations: The studied companies were large and well-established mature companies, so it is unclear whether newer companies and small and medium-sized enterprises would produce similar findings. Practical implications: Successful CSR implementation starts with a common but strategic understanding of what CSR means to the company. However, CSR implementation should (i) yield benefits that are tangible, and (ii) have a sustainable development impact because these two aspects form implementation benchmarks. Additionally, top management should be involved in CSR implementation, but with clear reasons and means. Originality/value: This paper unearths a CSR Implementation Success Model that amplifies views of “creating shared value” for sustainable development. It guides organizations towards strategic CSR, as opposed to the responsive CSR (returning profits to society) that largely dominates in developing countries. Additionally, it explains how to add value to the resource envelope lubricating the entire CSR implementation process
