Background: The implementation of green supply chain management activities as a business strategy remains unfamiliar to many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries such as South Africa. Setting: Implementation of green supply chain management activities by South African SMEs is necessary, given both the high failure rate of such enterprises in the country and the proven ability of such activities to promote the success of businesses. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between green supply chain management activities, operational performance and supply chain performance in manufacturing SMEs in South Africa. Methods: Data were collected from 219 manufacturing SMEs operating within Gauteng. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess the psychometric properties of measurement scales. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling. Results: Four green supply chain management activities, namely green purchasing, reverse logistics, environmental collaboration with suppliers and green manufacturing, exerted a positive influence on operational performance. Environmental collaboration with suppliers exerted the highest influence on operational performance when compared to green purchasing, reverse logistics and green manufacturing. In turn, operational performance exerted a strong positive influence on supply chain performance. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that manufacturing SMEs in developing countries could benefit by adopting green supply chain management activities, with improvements being realised in terms of increases in both operational and supply chain performance.

Green supply chain management (GSCM) is a powerful tool to differentiate one company from the others and it can greatly influence the success of any plan. With increased awareness about corporate responsibility and the necessary to meet the terms of the environmental policy, green supply chain management (GSCM) is becoming increasingly important for Indian manufacturers. This study aims to explore different factors whose consideration in supply chains lead to reduced environmental load. Adoption of those factors reduce environmental footprint and improve green credentials. The questionnaire used to obtain opinion of managers at different level from industries. The best factor for environmental friendly supply chain determined using Decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method. DEMATEL is a multi criteria decision making tool which has ability to convert qualitative data into quantitative analysis. DEMATEL method used to study the influence of the most important factor and to find out the ranking of critical factors in supply chain of industry. The result of paper gives best factor and adoption of same influences green performance of supply chain. Key finding from this study tells green manufacturing and green logistics has highest influence in green supply chain practices.

This paper, based on a survey of manufacturing firms in south and central China regions, examines the relationship among green supply chain management, competitive advantage and firm performance. By factor analyses, the scale of manufacturing firm’s green supply chain management is obtained. The results show that green supply chain management can be conceptualized as a four dimensional variable: green manufacturing, green purchasing, green distribution and green logistics. Furthermore, after testing research hypotheses by LISREL, we find that these four constructs all have significant effects on competitive advantage, and that green manufacturing and green logistics have significant effects on firm performance. The implications for our findings are also presented.

This chapter aims to analyze the financial and economic effects on green supply chain management of the food and beverages industry. For the research purpose, the fuzzy DEMATEL and fuzzy MOORA methods are used for the integrated model construction. The main stages of the green supply chain are considered as the dimensions and the selected performance measures are listed as a set of criteria for each dimension. Accordingly, 21 food and beverage companies listed in Istanbul Stock Exchange (BIST) are employed to measure the performance of green supply chain processes. It is concluded that low pollution is the most important criterion whereas alternatives has the least weight. Reverse logistic is also second most significant criterion which means that these companies give importance to reduce their costs. It is also found out that there is not a certain correlation between green supply chain management performances with the profitability of the firms. However, it can be seen that bigger firms have higher green supply chain management performance than the smaller firms.
