ABSTRACT A folding wing is a tactical missile launching device that needs to be miniaturised to facilitate storage, transportation, and launching; save missile and transportation space; and improve the combat capability of weapon systems. This study investigates the aeroelastic characteristics of the secondary longitudinal folding wing during the unfolding process. First, the Lagrange equation is used to establish the structural dynamics model of the folding wing, the kinematics characteristics during the deformation process are analysed, and the unfolding movement of the folding wing is obtained using the dynamic equations in the process. Then, the generalised unsteady aerodynamic force is calculated using the dipole grid method, and the multi-body dynamics equation of the folding wing is obtained. The initial angular velocity required for the deployment of the folding wing is analysed through structural model simulation, and the influence of the initial angular velocity on the opening process is studied. Finally, aeroelastic flutter analysis is performed on the folding wing, and the physical model of the folding wing verified experimentally. Results show that the type of aeroelastic response is sensitive to the initial conditions and the way the folding wing opens.

ABSTRACTA recent consideration in aircraft design is the use of folding wing-tips with the aim of enabling higher aspect ratio aircraft with less induced drag while also meeting airport gate limitations. This study investigates the effect of exploiting folding wing-tips in flight as a device to reduce both static and dynamic loads. A representative civil jet aircraft aeroelastic model was used to explore the effect of introducing a wing-tip device, connected to the wings with an elastic hinge, on the load behaviour. For the dynamic cases, vertical discrete gusts and continuous turbulence were considered. The effects of hinge orientation, stiffness, damping and wing-tip weight on the static and dynamic response were investigated. It was found that significant reductions in both the static and dynamic loads were possible. For the case considered, a 25% increase in span using folding wing-tips resulted in almost no increase in loads.

In this paper, the use of segmented electrodes is investigated to avoid cancellation of the electrical outputs of the torsional modes in energy harvesting from piezo-elastic and piezo-aero-elastic systems. The piezo-elastic behavior of a cantilevered plate with an asymmetric tip mass under base excitation is investigated using an electromechanically coupled finite element (FE) model. Electromechanical frequency response functions (FRFs) are obtained using the coupled FE model both for the continuous and segmented electrodes configurations. When segmented electrodes are considered torsional modes also become significant in the resulting electrical FRFs, improving broadband (or varying-frequency excitation) performance of the generator plate. The FE model is also combined with an unsteady aerodynamic model to obtain the piezo-aero-elastic model. The use of segmented electrodes to improve the electrical power generation from aeroelastic vibrations of plate-like wings is investigated. Although the main goal here is to obtain the maximum electrical power output for each airflow speed (both for the continuous and segmented electrode cases), piezoelectric shunt damping effect on the aeroelastic response of the generator wing is also investigated.
