Kali Putih (The White River) is located in Srumbung district, Magelang regency, Central Java, Indonesia. It is originated from the upper slope of Merapi volcano, flowing to the Southwest direction. Kali Putih belongs to one of the most channels where frequently flowed by lahar of Merapi volcano. Based on geomorphological and geological traces found at the surrounding of modern Kali Putih channel, this indicated that the flow of Kali Putih has undergone displacement several times. The position of ancient river valley in the past has changed into the modern river valley in the present time. The existence of ancient Kali Putih is exhibited by the presence of large dry valley morphology associated with volcanic blocks, gravels, and sand sized materials with various sorting, representing the characteristics of lahar and alluvial deposits. In the present time, the former river channels are currently used by local people for agricultural and fisheries land.

The gravel-bedded White River drains a 1279 km2 basin in Washington State, with lowlands sculpted by continental glaciation and headwaters on an actively glaciated stratovolcano. Chronic aggradation along an alluvial fan near the river’s mouth has progressively reduced flood conveyance. In order to better understand how forecasted climate change may influence coarse sediment delivery and aggradation rates in this lowland depositional setting, we assessed the contemporary delivery and routing of coarse sediment through the watershed; this assessment was based on a rich set of topographic, sedimentologic, and hydrologic data from the past century, with a focus on repeat high-resolution topographic surveys from the past decade. We found that most of the lower river’s contemporary bed-load flux originates from persistent erosion of alluvial deposits in the lower watershed. This erosion is a response to a drop in local base level caused by a major avulsion across the fan in 1906 and then augmented by subsequent dredging. The 1906 avulsion and modern disequilibrium valley profiles reflect landscape conditioning by continental glaciation and a massive mid-Holocene lahar. In the proglacial headwaters, infrequent large sediment pulses have accomplished most of the observed coarse sediment export, with exported material blanketing downstream valley floors; during typical floods, transported bed material is largely sourced from erosion of these valley floor deposits. Throughout the watershed, we observe decadal-scale coarse sediment dynamics strongly related to the filling or emptying of valley-scale sediment storage over 102−104 yr time scales, often in response to major disturbances that either emplace large deposits or influence their redistribution. Paraglacial responses in large watersheds are suggested to be inherently complicated and punctuated as a result of internal landform interactions and stochastic/threshold-dependent events. We argue, in combination, that Holocene disturbance, storage dynamics, and human flow modification make coarse sediment fluxes in the lower White River relatively insensitive to decadal climate variability. Results highlight the degree to which river sensitivity to contemporary disturbance, climatic or otherwise, may be contingent on local and idiosyncratic watershed histories, underscoring the need to unpack those histories while demonstrating the utility of watershed-scale high-resolution topography toward that end.

The knowledge of history is the study of incidents in the past. Therefore, the knowledge of history has many benefits, including: history can create a better future by taking lessons and experiences from the past. History can be studied if there are forms of heritage, such as a temples. The center of the temple in Indonesia is located in Central Java, the center of the Hindu-Buddhist temple. This region has the Borobudur Temple, which is best known by the people of Indonesia and foreign tourists, because Borobudur Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. But many other temples are interesting to be known by the community, especially by elementary school children who start studying history in fifth grade elementary school. Learning history in schools requires a variety of learning methods, so that students are enthusiastic and do not get bored while learning in class. In overcoming the history of learning methods that are less diverse in fifth grade elementary school children in Bandung, pop-up books were chosen as a solution to this problem because, the use of pop-up book media is a new experience for many students at school. Data collection techniques carried out by interview and observation using mixed methods. The main media is a pop up book entitled "Myths and Legends of Temples in Indonesia - Hindu-Buddhist Temple Edition in Central Java". Accompanied by supporting media, namely: stickers, carrying bags, tumblers, fans, and clothes. The design was made to increase insight and introduction of Hindu-Buddhist temples in Central Java to fifth grade students in Bandung.

Phlegmariurus is a genus of lycophyte plants in the family Lycopodiaceae which is sensitive to climate change. In the past, there were four species namely 1) Phlegmariurus phlegmaria, 2) P. nummulariifolius, 3) P. carinatus, and 4) P. squarrosus found as epiphytic clubmosses on many trees such as pines and Agathis on the southern slope of Mt. Slamet. During 42 years there has been a significant loss of Phlegmariurus at the slope which covers approximately 15,000 ha rain forest covering the subdistrict of Cilongok in the west, Baturraden in the middle, and Sumbang in the east. Some surveys that had been conducted from 1978 to 2020 showed that the presence frequency of the plant decreased. We correlated the temperature increase data from NOAA and precipitaion data from the local meteorology and geophysics data to the frequency of the plants. Furthermore, we also interviewed ten nurseries which sold the Phlegmariurus of approximately 60 nurseries (Figure 6). The information we gathered showed that the location of the plant sources was above the previous locations. We also observed the cultivated Phlegmariurus at different altitudes namely at 95-97 m, 300-400 m, and 600-800 m a.s.l. The result of this study showed that in the past there were a lot of Phlegmariurus spp. However, in 2020 Phlegmariurus were absent in most areas at the southern slope of Mt. Slamet. We proposed three causes of the migration and loss of Phlegmariurus at the southern part of Mt. Slamet namely: 1) The increase of temperature, the decrease of precipitation, and 3) commercial hunting.

Over the past decade, a shift has occurred in the Sedulur Sikep communitys attitude since the increase in its popularity and coverage in the mass media following its involvement in the anti-cement movement in Central Java. However, not all members of Sedulur Sikep participate in or even approve of this movement. This anthropological study attempts to illustrate how this situation has pushed the Sikep community members to (re)recognize their values, the influence of these values on environmental discourse, and how the relations between them are understood and practiced by Sedulur Sikep and the movement fighting in its name. By examining the adaptability of ecological knowledge and the ordering of visible space as a result of complex interactions between nature and nurture, it is possible to examine the shifts in their understanding of environmental dynamics and their cultural identity. The fragmentation that has occurred is rooted in different understandings of the reciprocal bonds between the Sedulur Sikeps tani mligi identity and natural resources. The dynamics and stagnation seen in how Sedulur Sikep positions itself in relation to cement production is also apparent in various methods of (re)interpretation, particularly regarding the relevance of Sedulur Sikeps beliefs to its ecological contestation and struggle for living space.

<p>Coastal deltas worldwide are under risk of degradation due to the increasing impacts of sea-level rise, and continuous human alterations of river basin hydrology. This research highlights the geomorphological changes that have occurred within the Tana River delta in Kenya, an important deltaic ecosystem of high biodiversity value in East Africa.</p><p>The geomorphological features (river channels, floodplain, coastal dune system) and their evolution over the past two centuries were described. Aerial and satellite imagery was used to assess the magnitude and distribution of coastal changes from the 1960s to present.  Additionally, sediment cores recovered within the mangrove environment were analysed to establish the succession of sedimentation periods and patterns. Finally, we explored the response of the coastal processes of deposition and erosion under anthropogenic alterations of the hydrological system.</p><p>It was established that over the past two centuries Tana River has changed its main channel and outlet to the Indian Ocean on three occasions. A first river avulsion occurred in the 1860s, followed by a second avulsion in the late 1890s that was promoted by human interference through channel expansion and dyke construction. The third change in river course has occurred gradually over the past 20 years, amid human efforts to engineer the river channels.</p><p>From the sediment analysis and radiocarbon dating, it is ascertained that the lower deltaic region developed rapidly over the past ~180 years, facilitated by increased sedimentation from the main Tana River. On the other hand, analysis of the coastline changes indicate that there has been increased erosion of the coastal dune system and mangrove vegetation along the former river outlet, leading to rapid marine intrusion into local subsistence farming areas. By analysing the combined impacts of both natural river dynamics and human alteration we highlight how the integrity of the Tana River delta has increasingly become vulnerable under present sea level rise and continued upstream river alteration.</p>

This chapter discusses an ancient South Asian and Southeast Asian cosmology of rule, based on the “mandala.” According to this concept, earthly harmony is achieved by replicating the macrocosm of the universe in the microcosm of the earthly kingdom. Unexplored in the literature on mandala kingdoms, however, are the implications of this concept for state surveillance. This is illustrated by the Yogyakarta Sultanate in Central Java, which was historically structured along mandala lines. Lying at the foot of Merapi volcano, the lowland court is thought to have a spirit counterpart in the crater of the volcano. Perturbation in the sultanate — political misdeeds, for example — is thought to result in perturbation in the spirit world of the volcano. Belief in this linkage between mundane and spirit worlds is reflected in close surveillance of volcanic activity by the Yogyakarta court and also by the national government. This surveillance calls to mind the concept of the panopticon prison. The concept of the mandala and derivative ideas, like that of seeking insight from mountains and mirrors, are — like the panopticon itself — essentially perspectivist in character and give people a valuable perspective on living in a hazardous environment like Merapi volcano.
