At the beginning levels of learning English, one of the difficulties students or children encounter in learning to is making correspondences between spoken and written English. In many cases, children have become acquainted with oral language and have some difficulty learning English conventions. They need hints and explanations about certain English orthographic rules and peculiarities. Students of English even those who have not so far learned to read in their mother tongue, will take advantage from learning to read from the start of connection with a foreign or second language. This conception forms the argumentation that the researcher seeks for throughout this article. The researcher begins with reviewing basic methods of teaching reading, before reporting on and expounding the results of a pilot study of learning by day care center children. The study indicated that the early preview to extensive reading (ER) promotes their progress in understanding and speech of the foreign language. The researcher suggests that text – based programs or instruction (TBI) extracted from text book with correspondent recordings should be developed as a choice both for children and some teachers.

Based on foreign language textbooks, including Russian, this article discusses the contrasting cognitive attitudes of the authors (the tendency to ethnocentricity and multiculturalism) which determine strategies used to select and structure the textbook content. The article determines, defines, explains and exemplifies the strategies of monoculturalism, biculturalism and multiculturalism typical of languages textbooks which they use to present linguistic, linguocultural and country study information to foreign learners. Monoculturalism strategy is understood as the attempt of text-book authors to depict only the worldview of the country whose language is being studied and to describe the facts and realia belonging to this linguoculture without their comparison with those from other language worldviews; biculturalism strategy is a certain selection and structuring of learning materials when two interrelated cultures, native and foreign, are compared; multiculturalism strategy is based on the comparison of different conceptual and language worldviews and on the attempt of authors to depict relations between different languages and cultures. AbstractJapanese character Kanji is difficult for the students who learn Japanese as a foreign language. Bacause Kanji has stroke order, and also Chinese and Japanese ways of reading. Moreover one character of kanji is presenting one meaning, thus the amount of kanji is massive. The informal interview conduct in some students on Semarang State University, Japanese Department, 2nd semester, reveal that students got problems in memorizing the meaning and also the ways of reading and writing kanji. They often find difficulties while combining two kanji characters become a word (jukugo). Some words they didn’t familiar with will cause any further problems such as they didn’t know how to apply it into the sentence. Actually, the text book they use has reading and writing practice sections which is enough and proper to learn by themselves. But sometimes students need to make they own sentences in order to make their memory of kanji more lasting. Since the students admitted that they lacks of practice making sentences, therefore, we conducted an experiment in a class, using kanji card in order to overcome the student’s problems mentioned above. The result shows that this technique is effective and encourages students to: produce jukugo, produce sentences which using the kanji, students feel fun in learning kanji. But, not quite suitable if we conduct it in a large class.

Therefore, the mixed methods research can be regarded as a suitable research design for examining textbooks. For the quantitative data, a 5-point Likert-type scale can be applied to instructors who use the textbooks, while a Rubrics can be applied to students. Also, the qualitative data obtained from researcher's field notes, observations, interviews with the participants (instructors, students, and the experts of book design and printing), the questionnaires to be applied to them, and the analysis of the textbooks subject to research, as well as, the quantitative data obtained from checklists and semantic scales can be evaluated by following a holistic approach.
