In confocal microscopy, the object is scanned by the coinciding focal points (confocal) of a point light source and a point detector both focused on a certain plane in the object. Only light coming from the focal point is detected and, even more important, out-of-focus light is rejected. This makes it possible to slice up optically the ‘volume of interest’ in the object by moving it axially while scanning the focused point light source (X-Y) laterally. The successive confocal sections can be stored in a computer and used to reconstruct the object in a 3D image display. The instrument described is able to scan the object laterally with an Ar ion laser (488 nm) at video rates. The image of one confocal section of an object can be displayed within 40 milliseconds (1000 х 1000 pixels). The time to record the total information within the ‘volume of interest’ normally depends on the number of slices needed to cover it, but rarely exceeds a few seconds.

This paper aims to provide explanation about John Louis Esposito’s insights on therelationship between Islam and The West. The relationship is a fluctuative one, some tensionsand even open conflict may occur. Some events become the entry point to the relationship, forinstance, the crusades that is not only happened physically but also, through this war, the meetingbetween Islam and The West establishes inter cultural dialogue among them.John Louis Esposito’s views on the relationship between Islam and The West ispositioned in view of some Muslim intellectuals and orientalists to emphasize its originality. Theintellectual positions do not put it on pros or cons side in the context of the relationship betweenIslam and The West.Historically, the relationship between Islam and The West actually has a theologicallystrong bond that there is common ground and similarities between Islam and The West. Islamand The west are inherited with Jewish and Christian traditions. Islam like Christianity andJudaism are religions ‘of the sky’ that are allied in Abrahamic religions. Therefore, according toJohn L. Esposito, based on historical fact, there were a real strong bond between Islam and theWest and it started centuries ago .

<div> <p>The total synthesis of principinol D, a rearranged kaurane diterpenoid, is reported. This grayanane natural product is constructed via a convergent fragment coupling approach, wherein the central 7-membered ring is synthesized at a late stage. The bicyclo[3.2.1]octane fragment is accessed by a Ni-catalyzed α-vinylation reaction. Strategic reductions include a diastereoselective SmI2-mediated ketone reduction with PhSH and a new protocol for selective ester reduction in the presence of ketones. The convergent strategy reported herein may be an entry point to the larger class of kaurane diterpenoids.</p> </div>

OBJECTIVEThe aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of optical frameless neuronavigation (ON) and robot-assisted (RA) stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) electrode placement in children, and to identify factors that might increase the risk of misplacement.METHODSThe authors undertook a retrospective review of all children who underwent SEEG at their institution. Twenty children were identified who underwent stereotactic placement of a total of 218 electrodes. Six procedures were performed using ON and 14 were placed using a robotic assistant. Placement error was calculated at cortical entry and at the target by calculating the Euclidean distance between the electrode and the planned cortical entry and target points. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare the results for ON and RA placement accuracy. For each electrode placed using robotic assistance, extracranial soft-tissue thickness, bone thickness, and intracranial length were measured. Entry angle of electrode to bone was calculated using stereotactic coordinates. A stepwise linear regression model was used to test for variables that significantly influenced placement error.RESULTSBetween 8 and 17 electrodes (median 10 electrodes) were placed per patient. Median target point localization error was 4.5 mm (interquartile range [IQR] 2.8–6.1 mm) for ON and 1.07 mm (IQR 0.71–1.59) for RA placement. Median entry point localization error was 5.5 mm (IQR 4.0–6.4) for ON and 0.71 mm (IQR 0.47–1.03) for RA placement. The difference in accuracy between Stealth-guided (ON) and RA placement was highly significant for both cortical entry point and target (p < 0.0001 for both). Increased soft-tissue thickness and intracranial length reduced accuracy at the target. Increased soft-tissue thickness, bone thickness, and younger age reduced accuracy at entry. There were no complications.CONCLUSIONSRA stereotactic electrode placement is highly accurate and is significantly more accurate than ON. Larger safety margins away from vascular structures should be used when placing deep electrodes in young children and for trajectories that pass through thicker soft tissues such as the temporal region.

The conflict between Islam and the West is rooted in contrasting worldviews that are informed by alternative moral underpinnings and differing existential implications. Furthermore, engagement between the Islamic and western paradigms is defined by imbalanced power relations in which the subaltern Islamic paradigm is pressured into conformance by the dominant western modernist paradigm. Using the issue of freedom of expression as an entry point, this article examines the contrasting cultural conduits that define each community by outlining the main tropes of their worldviews. It therefore attempts to suggest an alternative engagement between Islam and the West, one that emphasizes convergence over conflict.

There has been a marked increase in internship participation in recent decades. Many students who take cooperative programs consider internships to be the most appropriate entry point into their chosen careers. However, few studies have investigated factors related to internships from an engagement-value perspective that can influence the intention to continue doing internships with firms. This study concluded that academic self-efficacy was positively related to school and firm engagement; school engagement did not significantly relate to, but firm engagement did positively relate to the perceived usefulness of internships; and perceived usefulness of internships was positively related to intention to continue doing internships.
