<p>This thesis examines the adaptation of stage plays to cinema, and of films to theatre. The creative component of the thesis consists of my full-length play script Hamlet Dies At The End, and the script of its feature film adaptation (Song’s End), plus material from my film script Roy Jiminton and the script of its adaptation to theatre.  The critical component of this thesis examines seven stage-to-film adaptations and four film-to-stage adaptations, in order to illustrate the distinctions between writing for the two different mediums and to suggest principles to aid scriptwriters in adapting material between theatre and film.  The thesis concludes with discussion of the decisions I made when adapting my own scripts.  This thesis argues that to successfully adapt play or film scripts from one medium to the other, the adaptor must be willing to incorporate significant change in order to effectively ‘adapt’. Adaptations that merely transpose from the stage onto the screen, or vice versa, fail to engage with their new medium.  This thesis also proposes a set of adaptation principles for script adaptors.</p>

Abstract The aim of this paper is to compare two English language film adaptations (by Steven Soderbergh and Ari Folman) with each other and with the books they are based on. Stanisław Lem’s novels - The Futurological Congress and Solaris - were translated into English and the directors of the films mentioned above were able to work with them. However, while one translation was appreciated by many, including the author of the original, the other one did not get much credit and features many inaccuracies, which will be presented below. The question of how much the quality of translation influences the intersemiotic translation, which adaptation is believed to be, will be examined in the paper. As, according to translation scholars, preliminary interpretation is vital for any translations, it seems justified to state that without being able to refer to the author’s original thoughts the film-makers cannot produce a good adaptation. This will be revised on the basis of comparing examples from the books and films. The analysis will be drawn on an account of translation and film adaptation theories together with the outlining of cultural background for each work.

Dongeng karya Grimm bersaudara telah banyak diadaptasi ke dalam media film, salah satunya adalah “Snow White”. Penelitian ini membahas distorsi yang muncul dalam dua film adaptasi “Snow White”, yaitu “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) produksi Disney dan “Snow White and the Huntsman” (2012) produksi Universal Pictures. Dengan metode penelitian kualitatif berupa analisis deskriptif, ditemukan bahwa setiap adaptasi tersebut melakukan perombakan besar terhadap isi cerita yang menyebabkan perbedaan dengan sumber aslinya, yakni karya Grimm bersaudara. Film “Snow White” yang diproduksi  oleh Disney mengalami proses adaptasi cerita, yakni dengan mengubah cerita yang pantas dan mudah diterima anak-anak. Adapun film produksi Universal Pictures menghasilkan suatu karya adaptasi yang berbeda, yaitu dengan adanya pengurangan atau penambahan dari cerita aslinya. Perubahan cerita tersebut ditujukan untuk menarik minat penonton. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa salah satu alasan perubahan yang dilakukan pada dua film adapatasi tersebut disebabkan oleh target penonton yang berbeda.Abstract:Grimm Brothers’ tales have been adapted into films. One of them is the story of Snow White. This study is to examine the distortion appearing in two Snow White film adaptations, namely: “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) by Disney as well as  “Snow White and the Hunts- man” (2012) by Universal Pictures. By applying qualitative method, it is found that each film adaptation makes a lot of changes in its plot from its original version in the Grimm Brothers’. “Snow White” produced by Disney was changed into children story that was simpler and easier to understand. The one produced by Universal Picture, on the other hand, was made into different story by reducing  or adding its original story. The change of the story is aimed at gaining more viewers. The result of the research reveals that one of changes in the two film adaptations is due to their different viewers target.

This article examines the use of movement and visual form in the film adaptation of Samuel Beckett's Comédie (Marin Karmitz, 1966). The article broaches the kinetic elements of the work through addressing the manner in which the diegetic motion of the film can be seen to reflect extra-diegetic cinematic processes. The sense of movement that is created through Comédie's montage is then considered at length, making use of work on this theme by two quite different (though tangentially related) theorists: Sergei Eisenstein and Jean-François Lyotard. The article then charts the film's different manifestations of formal movement, and a basic framework is proposed to explain the manner in which the film creates moments of intensity, through what is termed the ‘local movement’ of the montage, and the manner in which the film manifests an overall curve of intensity, through what is termed the montage's ‘global movement’. It is argued that each form of montagic motion is reflected in the other, and that ultimately these movements might be seen to dramatise a human drive towards, and a concomitant flight from, an impossible state of ontological totality.

The Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) gene VI product (P6) is a multifunctional protein essential for viral propagation. It is likely that at least some of these functions require P6 self-association. The work described here was performed to confirm that P6 self-associates and to identify domains involved in this interaction. Yeast two-hybrid analyses indicated that full-length P6 self-associates and that this interaction is specific. Additional analyses indicated that at least four independent domains bind to full-length P6. When a central domain (termed domain D3) was removed, these interactions were abolished. However, this deleted P6 was able to bind to the full-length wild-type protein and to isolated domain D3. Viruses lacking domain D3 were incapable of producing a systemic infection. Isolated domain D3 was capable of binding to at least two of the other domains but was unable to self-associate. This suggests that domain D3 facilitates P6 self-association by binding to the other domains but not itself. The presence of multiple domains involved in P6 self-association may help explain the ability of this protein to form the intracellular inclusions characteristic of caulimoviruses.

Purpose. To determine if a mailed health promotion program reduced outpatient visits while improving health status. Design. Randomized controlled trial. Setting. A midsized, group practice model, managed care organization in Ohio. Subjects. Members invited (N = 3214) were high utilizers, 18 to 64 years old, with hypertension, diabetes, or arthritis (or all). A total of 886 members agreed to participate, and 593 members returned the initial questionnaires. The 593 members were randomized to the following groups: 99 into arthritis treatment and 100 into arthritis control, 94 into blood pressure treatment and 92 into blood pressure control, and 104 into diabetes treatment and 104 into diabetes control. Measures. Outpatient utilization, health status, and self-efficacy were followed over 30 months. Interventions. Health risk appraisal questionnaires were mailed to treatment and control groups before randomization and at 1 year. The treatment group received three additional condition-specific (arthritis, diabetes, or hypertension) questionnaires and a health information handbook. The treatment group also received written health education materials and an individualized feedback letter after each returned questionnaire. The control group received condition-specific written health education materials and reimbursement for exercise equipment or fitness club membership after returning the 1-year end of the study questionnaire. Results. Changes in visit rates were disease specific. Parameter estimates were calculated from a Poisson regression model. For intervention vs. controls, the arthritis group decreased visits 4.84 per 30 months (p < 0.00), the diabetes group had no significant change, and the hypertension group increased visits 2.89 per 30 months (p < 0.05), the overall health status improved significantly (−6.5 vs. 2.3, p < 0.01) for the arthritis group but showed no significant change for the other two groups, and coronary artery disease and cancer risk scores did not change significantly for any group individually. Overall self-efficacy for intervention group completers improved by −8.6 points (p < 0.03) for the arthritis group, and the other groups showed no significant change. Conclusions. This study demonstrated that in a population of 18 to 64 years with chronic conditions, mailed health promotion programs might only benefit people with certain conditions.

SUMMARY The levels of free oestrogen (oestrone and oestradiol-17β) in plasma in the ovarian vein were determined in three groups, each of 27 ewes, at nine intervals at about the time of oestrus. One group had a normal oestrus while the other two had been treated for 16 days with intravaginal sponges containing either 10 or 30 mg of a synthetic progestagen (Cronolone, Searle). In untreated ewes, the mean level (corrected) of oestradiol-17β in plasma from the active ovary rose from 25·3 ng/100 ml at −48 h to a peak of 91·6 ng/100 ml at 0 h (onset of oestrus) and then fell. There was evidence of biphasic production. The mean level of oestrone was relatively high (13·0 ng/100 ml) at −48 h; it fell to 2·0 ng/100 ml between −36 and −24 h and then rose again to 9·4 ng/100 ml at + 12 h. There was no significant change, with time, in the plasma levels of either oestrogen from the non-active ovary. The total amounts of oestradiol-17β and of oestrone produced from both ovaries at an oestrous period were estimated to average 9·7 and 2·4 μg. In treated ewes, a similar pattern of production of oestradiol-17β was shown by the ewes treated with 30 mg Cronolone. That of ewes treated with 10 mg differed (P < 0·01). Peak level was reached at an earlier stage, relative to the onset of oestrus, and it declined more rapidly, the total amount of oestrogen produced (oestrone + oestradiol-17β) was less (10 mg Cronolone, 8·6 μg; 30 mg Cronolone, 12·1 μg; normal oestrus, 12·1 μg), and there was no biphasic production.

This paper analyses the stabilityof an externally pressurized gas bearing (EPB) in a series-parallel arrangement. This mixed con. guration is an alternative to the rigidly mounted single bearing with no external damping, yielding, as one extreme, a high stiffness, but a low whirl threshold speed. The other extreme is a series bearing arrangement with a full-length externally pressurized sleeve between the journal and the housing, yielding a lower stiffness but a higher whirl threshold speed. The paper shows that a mixed con. guration allows for an increase in whirl threshold speed above that for an equivalent rigidly mounted single bearing but below that for a series arrangement. However, the mixed con. guration is stiffer than the series arrangement.

This paper is an attempt to explore how the powerful gaze of the panoptical power relation through the  technological aids of this neocolonial era which forms the ‘Self,’ distorts the identity, privacy and liberty of the  lives under this surveillance who becomes the ‘other’. The study is based on the reading of Rituparno Ghosh’s 2007 English–language film The Last Lear. The  film which won the National Award of India for the best feature film in English in 2007  is based on a 1985 Bengali play, Ajker Shajahan ( Today’s Shakespeare) written by Utpala  Dutt. The film unfolds the story of an aging Shakespearean actor persuaded by a young ambitious director to take up acting again. But the retired actor is unwilling to adjust the new world of cinema and its complex technical tricks. The film also expose how the powerful camera gaze and mobile phones turn as the new colonizer who distorts truth and induce fears in the minds of the people under surveillance. This study is carried out based on the Post-Panoptical theories of Surveillance.
