The objective of this work is to evaluate the physico-chemical quality of the groundwater of the Merdja plain and to determine the sources of mineralization. This quality is influenced by several environmental and anthropogenic factors such as geological context, climate, precipitation and interaction between groundwater and aquifers and human activities.  A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on samples taken from several wells spread over the entire Tebessa plain (Merdja) allowed us to detect two axes that explain 73.4% of the information. The first axis describes the variables related to mineralisation and the second one describes those related to agricultural activity. Multidimensional Positioning (MDS) confirmed the interaction of physico-chemical parameters between them and their influence on groundwater quality by highlighting three groups of wells according to their physico-chemical characteristics, particularly those containing high concentrations of nitrates. This contamination is mainly the result of spreading the fertilisers and wastes that are dumped into the plain without treatment. Salinization is the result of long-term interactions between groundwater and geological formations.

Groundwater is generally used for various purposes, particularly domestic and industrial purposes in all over the world. Fresh water from groundwater sources is high in the recent years and the groundwater is polluted high because of rapid population and industrial growth. It is very difficult to restore the contaminated groundwater by various pollutants.  Hence, it is important to analyse physico-chemical parameters of groundwater for its need for various sectors. Therefore, the present study was under taken to define the quality of groundwater with the help of WQI. The ground water samples were collected from 20 different places around Ambattur Industrial Estate in Chennai city. The groundwater quality assessment showed that the water quality of bore wells around Ambattur Industrial Estate is poor for drinking purpose as per WQI for BIS acceptable limit.  WQI observed from those selected 20 groundwater bore wells are ranging from 63.30 to 219.63.   The analysis reveals that the groundwater from the Ambattur Industrial Estate needs pre-treatment before it is being used for various purposes.

The study was conducted for exploration of physico-chemical parameters and ionic constituents of groundwater used in irrigation of four upazilas namely Tangail Sadar, Kalihati, Delduar and Nagarpur upazila of Tangail district during the months of March, April and May of 2015. The physico-chemical parameters (pH, EC and TDS), ionic constituents (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl-, CO32-, HCO3-, PO43- and SO42-) and trace metal (Fe and Mn) were analyzed to assess the quality of irrigation in relation to soil properties and crop growth. The pH of groundwater indicates slightly alkaline in nature. As regards to EC the groundwater was in ‘good’ class and medium salinity hazards in quality for irrigation and the concentration of TDS indicates water as fresh water. The concentration of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl-, CO32-, HCO3-, PO43- and SO42- of groundwater were recorded within the permissible limit for irrigation and these ions might not create hazardous impact on soil ecosystem for growing crops. The trace amount of Fe and Mn was detected in irrigation water. In the study area, the groundwater was within the recommended limit and would not create problem for irrigation and that have not long term effects on irrigating agricultural crops which could be safely used for irrigation purposes.Res. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the quality of water of the Mantovo Reservoir (Southeast Macedonia)based on physico-chemical parameters and the macrozoobenthos. Monthly sampling was performed during 2003 and 2004. Temperature and DO depth profile data indicate that the Mantovo Reservoir is a dimictic lake. Based on mean nutrient concentrations, the Mantovo Reservoir can be considered as being phosphorus-deficient. During the summer stratification, very high concentrations of Mn (2,819 ?g/l)and Cu (147.6?g/l)were detected in the lower profundal. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was the dominant species, which indicates the presence of organic pollution. Dominance of Chaoborus crystallinus and decline in abundance of L. hoffmeisteri in the lower profundal indicate a deterioration of environmental status in the deepest part of the lake.

Groundwater pollution is a very common problem worldwide, as it poses a serious threat to both the environment and the economic and social development and consequently generates several types of costs. The analysis of pollution control involves a permanent comparison between pollution costs and the costs associated with various methods of pollution reduction. An environmental policy based on economic instruments is more effective than an environmental policy focused on command and control tools. In this respect, the present paper provides a case study showing how anthropogenic factors such as wastewater, industrial, agricultural, and natural factors are able to change the physical and chemical parameters of groundwater in the study area, thus endangering their quality. In order to monitor the groundwater quality in the region of Dobrudja, an analysis of physico-chemical parameters was performed. The content of heavy metals was analyzed and the health risk index was taken into account and analyzed, in order to set a better correctness of the metal content from the underground waters. Studies on groundwater quality control have shown that, in many parts of the world, water has different degrees of quality depending on the natural and anthropogenic factors acting on the pertaining environment. This is why more attention should be paid to the prevention of groundwater pollution and the immediate remediation of accidents.

The study assessed the effect of waste dumpsites on groundwater quality of upper aquifers in Port Harcourt. Water samples were retrieved from hand-dug wells from a dumpsite and a control site and analyzed for physico-chemical parameters and heavy metal content. Results show that electrical conductivity of the dumpsite water samples was 42.06μS/cm while the control site water samples recorded 31.27μS/cm. Turbidity of the water samples ranged from 0.62NTU-0.65NTU. Total Dissolved Solids of the dumpsite water sample was 26.8mg/l while the TDS of the control site water sample was 33.70mg/l. The pH of water samples from both sites ranged from 5.46 -7.34. The pH of water samples from the dumpsite was slightly acidic (5.46). The average temperature of the water samples was approximately 28oC. Phosphate concentration of water samples ranged from 0.32 mg/l-0.54 mg/l while chloride levels ranged from 10.60mg/l-17.12 mg/l. All physico-chemical parameters and heavy metal content of the water samples all fell within the WHO and NSDWQ stipulated standards except for the lead concentration of the water sample retrieved from the dumpsite. The study also revealed that waste dumpsites did not alter the concentration of the measured physico-chemical properties and heavy metal concentration of water samples. However, the study recommended that periodic assessments of groundwater quality of waste dumpsites should be undertaken

Variations in the water quality of the Imo River estuary was investigated by measuring values of selected physico-chemical parameters. Samples were collected bi-monthly between April 2015 and March 2016, covering the dry and wet seasons of the year. Three stations were selected: upstream (Kalibiama), midstream (Opobo) and downstream (Queenstown). Analysis of results showed that physico-chemical parameters were affected more on seasonal than spatial scale. Principal component analysis carried out indicated that values of most of the parameters recorded within the stations clustered together. On the other hand, dispersed values were recorded in months and seasons with significant variations at (p≤0.05) among most parameters. The high spatial variations in phosphates, suspended solids and lead could be associated to human activities like laundry and waste disposal within Opobo and Kalibiama stations. While, high seasonal variability in most parameters could be associated with intense sunshine, cloud cover and tidal intrusion/dilution due to runoff. It can be concluded that nutrient fluxes due to nitrogenous fertilizers are not a problem within the estuary. However, chemical factors and biodegradable components which cause fluctuations in biological oxygen demand are more of the challenge. AbstractThe Aşağ Fırat River is located in the south-eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The water quality of the Aşağ Fırat River basin has been degrading for some time, primarily as the result of pollutants associated with the discharges from numerous domestic and agricultural point sources. Aquatic macroinvertebrate samples were collected from eight lakes conducted by using both hand-nets and an Ekman-Birge grab sampler during the summer and autumn of 2014, focusing on the species composition and distribution of aquatic oligochaetes in eight lakes of the Aşağ Fırat River basin, and their relationships with physico-chemical parameters measured in those lakes using Principal Component Analysis. Results of analyses of all identified benthic macroinvertebrates clearly indicate the percent dominance of oligochaetes in benthic samples in the eight dam lakes that were sampled: Hacıhıdır lake (62.9%); Atatürk lake (49.6%); Üçöz lake (28.9%); Dumluca lake (22.01%); Seve lake (13.9%); Çat lake (8.5%); Karakaya lake (7.8%) and Birecik lake (5%). Runoff waters from a main bridge near Nantes (France), surface waters and pore waters in the infiltration basin collecting runoff were analysed after filtration and ultrafiltration to investigate the role of colloids in the transfer of trace metals (Zn, Cu and Pb) from the road to the groundwater. The role of the basin in mitigation of the variations of physico-chemical parameters and chemical elements concentrations was confirmed. An increase of mobile colloidal phase by comparison with runoff and high concentrations of trace metals were observed in pore waters of the sediment. Up to 100% of Pb and 60% of Cu and Zn may be associated to compounds having a molecular weight above 5 kDaltons. Principal component analysis outlined the variability of the influence of the physico-chemical parameters on trace metals concentrations for the different waters. Speciation calculations pointed out the potential precipitation of Fe and Al oxyhydroxides in all kind of waters.

O Brasil apresenta grande disponibilidade de água doce em seus mananciais. Fazendo parte desse recurso encontra-se, o rio Paciência, localizado na Ilha do Maranhão destacado pela sua importância local, principalmente por contribuir com suas águas para recarga dos mananciais subterrâneos, fonte de abastecimento público de vários bairros de São Luís, capital do estado. No entanto, este rio vem sofrendo comprometimento da qualidade de suas águas, consequência do processo de uso e ocupação dos espaços em sua bacia. Destacando-se como um dos principais problemas relacionados a qualidade de ambientes fluviais,  a eutrofização, que consiste no processo em que o corpo d’água adquire elevados níveis de nutrientes (fosfatos e nitratos), é um indicador determinante da qualidade da água. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a qualidade da água e do estado trófico na bacia hidrográfica do rio Paciência atráves dos parâmetros fisico-químico evidenciando os trechos mais comprometidos conforme os valores alcançados nas análises.
