Based on the observations' results, many graduate students from an English course institution still do not understand public speaking techniques. Even though the course institution is a well-known course institution in Indonesia, these graduates are relatively fast reading and speaking English. However, this word's smooth production was not matched with variations in voice, changes in intonation, and minimal meaning. As a lecturer in the English department, this is also our responsibility. Moreover, these graduates are now having their English course institutions independently. They are required to be able to communicate with their students. It is hoped that the current course institutions, especially in the Selong sub-district, can improve the quality of learning by applying correct public speaking techniques. Therefore, it is necessary to hold public speaking training for tutors at English language course institutions. The service plans carried out are: 1.) Delivery of mentoring material, 2.) Implementation of speaking practice in internal forums, 3.) Study tours at other course institutions, 4. ) Practicing speaking as well as evaluating outside the forum. This community service has increased English tutors' understanding in the Foreign Language Center (FLC) of Selong sub-district, East Lombok, seen from how they apply public speaking techniques during their teaching practice English tutors.

It can be a challenge for a university teacher to arrange the teaching of written tasks so that weak foreign language students with differing disciplinary backgrounds can develop their written communication skills. The difficulty is to avoid the focus from becoming just language proficiency. In one course at a technical university in Sweden, three written summaries are scaffolded to address such a challenge. The purpose of this teaching practice paper is to show how employing a specific strategy of repetition facilitates the writing skill development in low-level English language multidisciplinary students. The repeated features are the genre of the task, the writing process used and the occurrences of teacher response. They are organised along a specific learning path so as to encourage the students to build on the knowledge gained in each iteration, between tasks and potentially beyond the course. The paper describes the journey the students take writing the three summaries, working on fulfilling criteria concerned with aspects such as content organisation, coherence and cohesion, and limited grammar errors. A brief analysis of excerpts from one case student’s first and third summaries is included. It is suggested that while the scaffolding can remain the same, the material could be replaced to suit other skills and language level needs.

In the past decade or two, there has been an obvious increase in the number of school children proficient in English. One of the reasons is the number of English classes per week, but even more importantly, it is the influence of the media. Students are greatly exposed to video games. In this paper, a survey was conducted in order to find the connection between video-game playing and English proficiency. Ninety six students filled out the survey answering a range of question on the quantity and quality of their video game playing. The conclusion drawn was that video games have a profound impact on language learning. The areas of most benefit were vocabulary and pronunciation. As a form of highly desirable entertainment, video games provide a positive and motivating atmosphere, which is perfect for adopting a foreign language.

ABSTRACT This article presents and briefly discusses some results of a survey conducted as part of a study on multiple literacies and the use of technology in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. An online questionnaire has been sent to English teachers of the third cycle and secondary education in Portugal with the aim to investigate their perceptions on the use of new technologies, particularly Web 2.0 tools, in their teaching practice. This article focuses particularly on the results from the questions related to materials and digital tools frequently used, teachers’ general view on the use of technology, as well as the digital and critical literacies approach. It has been found that although technology seems to be part of the teaching practice of this group of teachers – and although further research is necessary to deeply understand the actual use of technology in this particular scenario – it can be assumed that suitable guidance, training and further development of appropriate materials for teachers and students are necessary to facilitate and better integrate new technologies in the EFL classroom.   Keywords: New technologies and language learning. Multiliteracies. Digital literacies. Critical thinking. English language teaching.
