Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between accounting conservatism, corporate governance and political connection in listed firms in Malaysia where political influence plays a significant role in the capital market and in many business dealings. Design/methodology/approach By utilizing 824 firm-year observations comprising large listed companies over a period of four years from 2004, this study uses ordinary least squares regression models to investigate the relationship between accounting conservatism, corporate governance and political connections in Malaysia. Multiple measures of conservatism developed by Basu (1997) and Khan and Watts (2009) are employed. Findings The results show evidence of accounting conservatism (bad news being recognized earlier than good news) in Malaysia. Further, the results reveal that better corporate governance structure in terms of board independence is positively associated with accounting conservatism while management ownership is negatively associated with it. However, political connection has a negative moderating effect on the positive relationship between accounting conservatism and board independence. The results also suggest political connections have a positive association with firm’s future performance. Originality/value This study is the first in investigating the effect of political connections on accounting conservatism in Malaysian context and how political connections negatively affect the monitoring role of the corporate boards. By directly measuring political connection and controlling for various corporate governance mechanisms and firm-specific attributes, this study contributes to enhance the authors’ understanding of the political influence in financial reporting quality and firm performance in an emerging market setting.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to verify existence of political connection of firms in India. For this purpose the paper first presents a theoretical model and then tests empirically the movement of stock prices during two state elections in India. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is theoretical modelling where the paper applies the standard Cournot model of oligopoly. The paper then applies correlation and Wilcoxon Paired Rank Sum test to verify the results of the theoretical model by using data from the Indian stock market during the election results. Findings – The theoretical result states that some firms opt for political connection and some remain independent in an oligopoly. It also shows that political connection affects stock price. The empirical results find out that divergent responses of stock prices to the election results can be linked to politically connection. Research limitations/implications – The theoretical model is a simple two firm model and not generalized to n number of firms. The empirical test considers only two state elections and applies simple statistical test. The study is restricted to one country only. Practical implications – The paper has practical implications for stock market. It has implications for corporate governance and for political governance. This is important since political connection of firms has emerged as an important issue in India. Social implications – The paper is important as it addresses the issue of political connection of firms, which have ramifications for social equilibrium. In a democratic country like India any nexus between political party and firms may adversely affect not only corporate governance but also political governance. Originality/value – This paper looks at political connectedness theoretically in a federal structure, an issue not addressed so far in the literature. Second it considers not so discussed topic of market perception of political connection in India. The originality of the paper is that it presents a theory and also verifies the theoretical results with empirical test.

Purpose: The objective of the paper is to examine the impact of corporate governance on the dividend payout policy of firms listed on the Pakistan stock exchange during 2010-2020. As Pakistani investors face issues regarding their return in the shape of dividends and depend upon the firm’s corporate governance strength. To test whether changes in firm code of corporate governance have a significant influence on dividend policy. Design/Methodology/Approach: The panel data has been used for the period 2010-2020 and panel least square has been applied. Further, to test the association, following factors such delisting risk, government tenure, political connection with institutional shareholding as many political firms hold corporate shares which influence the decision to pay dividends. Findings: Findings from the fixed effect model show that corporate governance has a negative impact on dividend policy while government tenure, politically connected firm has a positive impact on the dividend. The study also concludes that firm size, profitability, tax, asset turnover, leverage, and firm shareholding also influence firm dividend payment behavior. Implications/Originality/Value: The implication of study reveals that firms must focus on strong their governance and include more independent directors on the board which leads to favorable strategies regarding investors. The investor must invest in those firm where lower political connection, pay continuous dividend either high or low decease/increase delisting chances, strong corporate governance and firm specific factors also lead to make decision of dividend payment.

The purpose of the study was to test the influence of Political Connections, Good Corporate Governance, and Financial Performance on Tax Avoidance. The research method used is a quantitative method. The study used data of 45 manufacturing companies listed Index Stock Exchange (IDX) during the period 2014 to 2018. Samples are taken by the purposive sampling method and which meets the criteria for sample selection. Data is processed with Version 9 Eviews software using the Generalized Least Square (GLS) method. Results show that Political Connection and Financial Performance have a positive influence on Tax Avoidance, this suggests that there are still companies that practice tax evasion. Corporate Governance has no effect on Tax Avoidance, meaning the existence of Corporate Governance is effective in attempting to prevent tax avoidance practices.

The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of political connection and corporate governance mechanisms (independent board of commissioner, institutional ownership, and board of commissioner size) toward Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) disclosures using Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines. Purposive sampling technique was conducted and 272 non-financial companies listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange during 2015-2017 were acquired as the samples (816 firm-years). For testing the hypotheses, unbalanced Generalized Least Square panel data regression was employed. The finding shows that political connection and board of commissioner size have a positive impact on CSR disclosures while independent board of commissioner and institutional ownership do not. This study contributes to political connection, corporate governance mechanism, and CSR disclosure literature by identifying CSR disclosure based on GRI guidelines up to the most detailed level, which are 77 disclosure items indicators and 254 sub-indicators. Meanwhile, previous research only identify CSR disclosure up to 77 GRI indicators without paying attention to the sub-indicators in detail.

This study aims to analyze the effect of Good Corporate Governance on tax avoidance.This study uses 4 variables for measuring Good Corporate Governance namely Institutional Ownership, Audit Quality, Company Size, and Political Connection. The population of this study are all manufacturing sector companies that have been listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) in the 2013-2017 period with a total final sample of 160 companies that have met the criteria. The samples in this study used nonprobability sampling method with purposive sampling technique in order to get a sample size of 32 companies. Data analysis technique used was simple linear regression analysis of each variable by using Eviews. The results showed that Institutional Ownership did not affect tax avoidance, while Audit Quality, Company Size, and Political Connection had an influence on tax avoidance.  Keywords:  Tax Avoidance, Institutional ownership, Audit Quality, Company Size, and Political Connection

This study aims to investigate the influence of corporate governance and political connection to tax avidance, and its impact on value of firm. The population used is all companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) with the study period 2015-2017. The sample size is 102 companies per year, selected by purposive sampling method. This study uses documentary data, namely annual reports and financial reports. Path analysis was used to analyze data and hypothesis test of mediation was done by sobel test. The results of this study indicate that corporate governance has a negative and significant influence on tax avoidance, while the political connection has a positive and significant effect on tax avoidance. Tax avoidance has a negative and significant influence on firm value. In addition, tax avoidance can mediate the influence of political connection on firm value. The implications of this research are companies with high levels of corporate governance practices that have better controls, thus reducing tax avoidance. While the relationship of political connection encourage companies to act more aggressively in tax avoidance action. Tax avoidance conducted by the company shows the practice of tax avoidanceso as to lower the level of investor confidence in investing its capital that impact on the decline in corporate value.
