. The present article analyses verbs of falling and throwing in Basque. The frame-based approach is used to fi nd out the relevant semantic oppositions. Both elicitation and corpus data are used in the study. The dominant Basque verbs of falling are erori ‘to fall’ and its Bizcayan counterpart jautsi, which can be used in most of the frames. Another verb, isuri ‘flow’, can refer to liquids, as well as the dominant verb. The verb etorri ‘to come’ refers to liquids moving horizontally, rather than vertically. Falling of hair and teeth can be expressed with the verb galdu ‘to lose’. The only frame where the dominant verb erori is hardly ever used is falling of rain and snow. The predicate ariizan with progressive meaning and the verbs egin ‘to do’ and bota ‘to throw’ can be used instead. The dominant verb of throwing in Basque is bota ‘to throw’ taking both allative and locative arguments. Intensive throwing is expressed by verbs jaurti, jaurtiki, aurtiki ‘throw, toss, cast’. Some verbs of throwing, such as lurreratu ‘to throw to the ground’ < lur ‘ground’, ureratu ‘to throw to water’ < ur ‘water’, airatu ‘to throw to air’ < aire ‘air’ incorporate the Orienter. The incorporation of a typical Trajector is possible as well, cf.harrikatu ‘to throw stones’ < harri ‘stone’ and dardatu ‘to throw an arrow, a spear’ <dardo ‘arrow, spear’. Metaphorical meanings of verbs of falling and throwing in Basque often have their counterparts in the neighbouring Romance languages — Spanish and French. Thus, the verb erori ‘to fall’, as well as its Spanish counterpart caer can refer to winning something in lottery. Abstract The onset of Professor Jacek Fisiak’s scholarly career is marked by his 1961 Ph.D. dissertation devoted to the lexical influence of English upon Polish. This study, conducted 55 years ago, offers a multilayered analysis and sets the standards of studies on lexical transfer from English to Polish for the years to come. The present article is a tribute to Fisiak’s first scholarly endeavor; it examines the fate of lexical items comprising Fisiak’s corpus in the second decade of the 21st century. More specifically, by conducting searches in the National Corpus of Polish as well as a Google search, the paper checks which borrowings to the Polish language listed and scrutinized by Fisiak gained popularity, which fell out of use, and which underwent semantic changes.

Desde o início da Era Industrial, nota-se a inversão gradativa de papéis entre máquina e homem: a "ascensão das máquinas" teria transformado o homem em "servo". Nem mesmo o campo das artes esteve livre dos efeitos de tal "ascensão", sobretudo no contato com os meios de comunicação de massa, como o rádio, o cinema e a televisão. Na verdade, tudo não passou de um prelúdio para o que ainda estava por vir: a informática atingiu as artes e nossa cultura fundada na tradição escrita, resultando em transformações muito mais amplas no âmbito da comunicação individual e social.Palavras-chave: arte; técnica; mediatização.Abstract: The present article brings up issues on the influence of technique on art in the Information Age. Since the beginning of the Industrial Age, there has been a progressive inversion of roles in the relation between man and machine : the "rise of machine" seems to have turned man into a "servant". Not even the field of art remained untouched by the effects of such "rise", specially in its contact with communication media like radio, cinema and television. In fact, all that was but a prelude to what was still to come: informatics reached into the arts and our writing­ based culture, causing widespread transformations in the realms of social and individual communication.Keywords: art; technique; mediatization.

AbstractDont has been claimed to be an exception to the ‘subject island’ constraint (Tellier, 1991; Sportiche and Bellier, 1989; Heck, 2009) and to contrast with true relative pronouns such as de qui. We provide corpus data from a literary corpus (Frantext), which show that relativizing out of the subject is possible with dont and de qui in French relative clauses, and is even the most frequent use of both relative clauses. We show that it is not a recent innovation by comparing subcorpora from the beginning of the twentieth century and from the beginning of the twenty-first century. We also show, with an acceptability judgement task, that extraction out of the subject with de qui is well accepted. Why has this possibility been overlooked? We suggest that it may be because de qui relatives in general are less frequent than dont relatives (about 60 times less in our corpus). Turning to de qui interrogatives, we show that extraction out of the subject is not attested, and propose an explanation of the contrast with relative clauses. We conclude that in this respect, French does not seem to differ from other Romance languages.

Abstract Focusing on sibilant-stop onsets, this paper deals with syllabic complexity in Romance languages. At its core are two empirical studies that address the complex case of French: a type-level study is based on the Petit Robert, and a token-level study uses Parisian and Southern French corpus data elaborated in the framework of the PFC program (Phonologie du Français Contemporain). The paper identifies three factors behind the emergence of phonotactic complexity: (a) vowel elision, (b) borrowing, and (c) expressivity.

Abstract This essay investigates forensic fiction as a trend in televised crime fiction and argues that this trend or subgenre is particularly interesting if we are to understand how surveillance is portrayed in contemporary society. The essay looks particularly into an extremely popular example of forensic fiction, namely CSI and its two spin-offs CSI: NY and CSI: Miami. Through a discussion of the conceptions of knowledge, crime and power, which seem to come forth in the three CSI series, the present article argues that the particular blend of technological optimism, positivism and moralism that can be witnessed in forensic fiction in general, and in CSI in particular, is important to understanding how popular culture lends a certain normalization of surveillance to everyday life

In Early Modern English, double comparatives were often encountered in both spoken and written language. The present article investigates the redundantly marked comparative worser in relation to its irregular, but etymologically justified, counterpart worse. My aim is to examine the diachronic development of the form as well as its distribution in the written language of the 16th and 17th centuries. Two detailed corpus studies are used to reveal the set of parameters underlying the variation between worse and worser, which include system congruity, semantics, and standardization effects. However, the focus here is on the tendency to maintain an alternation of stressed and unstressed syllables, known as the Principle of Rhythmic Alternation. This prosodic principle (which has been argued to be particularly influential in English) turns out to be responsible for most of the results obtained in the analysis of the corpus data.

The distinction between syntagmatic compounds of the type N Prep N, such as Fr. jouet d’enfant, and nominal syntagms of the type N Prep N, such as the partially equivalent Fr. jouet pour enfants, remains unclear and vague. This is mainly because the lexical and syntactic status of syntagmatic compounds still is controversial. In some cases, as in jouet d’enfant and jouet pour enfants, partial equivalent syntagmatic compounds and nominal syntagms may coexist and underlie a specific variation and alternation. In other cases, such as Pt. bracelete de aço and bracelete em aço, two variants of a syntagmatic compound may alternate and coexist. The first part of this paper provides an overview of the current discussion on these two types of constructions. The second part addresses the alternation and variation of syntagmatic compounds and nominal syntagms by means of analysis of large-scale corpus data, the French, Spanish and Portuguese corpus of the TenTen family. Here, the focus lies on the variation of the prepositional internal element of these constructions as well as on a comparison of different word formation patterns.

The study of Romance sounds, and their structure, has for centuries occupied a fundamental position in core phonetic and phonological research. And for good reason. By examining the typological symmetries and asymmetries among the different Romance languages we have learned much about the universal properties of language and the production/perception mechanisms which underscore acquisition and sound change. This provides a rich terrain in which to formulate and test new hypotheses related to sound systems and their development. The commissioned authors in the current volume present recent research in the acoustic, articulatory, phonological, perceptual, and acquisition domains from an array of theoretical foci. The work presented here is sure to have a far-reaching impact in the speech sciences for many years to come.
