This article sets out to analyse forms of the imperative mood, which bear the indirect meaning of obligation. The aim is to characterise the structure and semantics of phrases, in which quasi-imperative forms are used. This analysis determines the direction of grammatical transposition and its nature. It is suggested that the imperative forms with the meaning of obligation are interpretative in nature and indirectly reflect the alleged expression of will. The analysis uses descriptive and structural-semantic methods. The semantic groups of clauses that include the imperative mood forms under consideration are distinguished. The features of the use of imperative forms with the meaning of obligation in the modern Russian language are described.

The research treats letters to one’s younger (usually teen) self posted on the Internet as epistolary genre marked with peculiar linguistic and pragmatic features. Though the letters to one’s self imply intrapersonal communication, i.e. the sender is identical to the addressee, it is not how the sender perceives the situation, which is revealed by the use of pronouns (I for the sender and you for the younger self). However, these two may merge and then we appears to refer to the author’s younger and current selves. Another feature of the letters is roles assumed by the addressors. They may occur as a mentor to their rebellious and anxious younger self, which correlates with the purpose of the letter – giving advice. Alternatively, the authors may position themselves as omniscient fortune-tellers who step in in times of trouble to offer support to their teen self by telling what is there to come. Each of the two roles and purposes correlates with specific language means. The mentor role turns the letter into a lesson where the Imperative Mood prevails. The role of a fortune-teller transforms the letter into an autobiographical sketch told in a bizarre way: the author shifts past events into the future with the help of deictic markers (e.g., today, this) and tenses (e.g., future tenses or their synonyms such as constructions to be about to and to be going to). The letters to one’s younger self that contain an autobiographical component provide the researcher with an insight into the process of identity construction, since they show how one endows identity with continuity and bridge the divide between one’s teen and adult selves. In addition, the letters meant as advice deliver the culture specific idea of what ‘a good life’ is: they are written to guide their actual intended audience, i.e. Internet (teen) users, in modern society and inform them of true values and right choices.


The article deals with the analysis of the development of knowledge and ideas about ethnonyms in historiography and source study, which were similar to the name of the East Slavic tribal Union ‘Severians’, mentioned in the IX century sources (The Chronicle of Theophanes the Confessor and the Bavarian geographer). Various hypotheses regarding the interpretation of these ethnonyms and their ethnic attribution are considered. The author comes to the conclusion that, despite the fact that the studied ethnonyms are mainly associated with the Severians of Danube region, they also have a certain value for studying the historiography of the history of the Severians of the Left-bank of Dnieper, since they can reflect the stages of their migration from the Danube, according to some hypotheses and data of the Primary Chronicle.

This study aims at analyzing mood structure type of the clause on recount and procedure text in English textbooks of SMA where it was analyzed based on the mood structure types of the clause. It was designed as a descriptive qualitative study and discourse analysis. Data were collected through documentation method. The technique in collecting the data is by determining the source to be investigated, determining the supporting resources, and seeking the recount and procedure text on the English textbook. The Data were analyzed using Mood structure analysis suggested by M.A.K Haliday. In analyzing the data, the activities did by deep reading, identifying, classifying, analyzing, and calculating the percentages. Based on the results of the data analysis, the findings of this research can be stated as follows: (1) There are some types of mood structure in the English textbooks of SMA at the tenth grade students which published by Pusat Perbukuan Departemen Pendidikan Nasional especially on recount text, they are indicative: declarative mood (99,41%), indicative: interrogative mood (0,59%), and imperative mood (0%). (2) The results of mood structure type on procedure text are indicative: declarative mood (25,62%), indicative: interrogative mood (0%), and imperative mood (74,38%). (3) The results in the textbook which published by Yudhistira especially on recount text are indicative: declarative mood (98,94%), indicative: interrogative mood (1,06%), and imperative mood (0%), and also on procedure text are indicative: declarative mood (25%), indicative: interrogative mood (0%), and imperative mood (75%).

The article is dedicated to the research of specificity of language material selection for introduction of Russian imperative mood in “Russian as a foreign language” (“RFL”) classes. Authentic language materials from different discourses that best showcase the diversity of modern Russian language (such as young people slang, jargons, common folk slang etc.) are required for the modern approach of communicative competence improvement.
