The Septuagint reading predominantly influences the interpretation of Genesis 47:13-26 (primarily v. 21). Despite a positive portrayal of Joseph, he is also seen as Pharaoh’s accomplice to enslave the Egyptian people. This connection with slavery activities contradicts the traditional image of Joseph as the life-keeper of many people. Solution for the negative portrait of Joseph usually refers to the Masoretic Text, although it is not a reference to many modern Bible translations and commentaries. The Septuagint as a reference, in this case, is indeed difficult to reject. However, that does not mean that Joseph promotes the slavery of the Egyptian people throughout the land, but rather an ancient form of state capitalism. This article draws on textual criticism, word studies, form criticism, and agricultural knowledge background in the ancient Middle East. The contribution of this research is to show that, instead of enslaving, Joseph formulated an Egyptian food politics in the larger context of Joseph’s narrative reality as the life-keeper of many people.

Abstract The crux at Thucydides 4.121.1 has recently come under renewed scrutiny from scholars, but decisive conclusions were not reached. This article argues that commentators have not yet taken into account all relevant considerations, and that as a result the passage still remains incompletely understood. The verb προσήρχοντο is derived from προσέρχομαι, not προσάρχομαι. The unusual imperfect form προσήρχοντο (instead of expected Attic προσῇσαν) can perhaps be regarded as an instance of poetic verbal inflection (compare Pi. O. 9.93 διήρχετο), a type of diction suitable in the context of Thucydides’ heroic-poetic depiction of Brasidas. Modern scholars’ focus on the textual criticism of this one word has in general caused them to neglect matters of verbal interpretation. As a consequence, some important aspects of Thucydides’ language and the cultural context of the scene remain underappreciated.

Jelen tanulmány célkitűzése kettős. Egyrészt a Timokratés elleni beszéd érvrendszereinek mélyreható elemzését kívánom nyújtani, másrészt ezen elemzésen keresztül a XIX. században felmerült és azóta is sokat vitatott szövegkritikai problémákat veszem górcső alá. Új aspektusból közelítve a korábban felvetett problémákhoz – az érveléstechnika elemzésén keresztül kiegészítve E. M. Harris meggyőző érveit – amellett érvelek, hogy a beszéd két része valójában egy jól átgondolt, precízen szerkesztett egészet alkot, így a szöveg integritását nem indokolt megkérdőjelezni. The current study has two objectives. On the one hand, it provides an in-depth analysis of the argumentation of the oration Against Timocrates. On the other hand, the analysis focuses on the issues of textual criticism that arose in the 19th century and have been debated ever since. Approaching the problems from a new perspective – augmenting the convincing arguments put forward by E. M. Harris with the analysis of the argumentation – the study argues that the two halves of the speech are in fact parts of a well-planned, and precisely edited whole, and the integrity of the text need not be questioned.

This paper discusses the concept of Birru al-Walidain in the Qur’an, especially in Qs. al-Isra 'verse 23 which seems to be ignored nowadays, of course, Birru al-Walidain here is related to actions, especially words to parents. In the study of semiotics, the word uff is a symbol in the delivery of speech that must be interpreted. One of the semiotic theories developed by scholars is Roland Barthes' semiotics because Barthes uses structural analysis in textual criticism. In his theory, Barthes offers two stages of theory. First, it is referred to as a linguistic system or commonly known as denotative meaning. Second, it is called a mythological system commonly known as connotative meaning. More details. The linguistic system is textual reading and the mythological system is contextual reading. It is certain that the concept of Birru al-Walidainin the Qur'an is very relevant to Barthes' theory, even to other contemporary problems today. Then, the author will apply Barthes' semiotic theory to understand the concept of Birru al-Walidainin the Qur’an. The results of the application of the theory in Q.S al-Isra verse 23, namely: the linguistic system in the word uff which is not only interpreted as "ah" but also a prohibition not to speak harshly to parents. While the mythological system is that a child is required to serve his parents by loving them both. The ideology contained in this verse is related to morals, not only to parents, but also to older people.

The term hermeneutic comes from the Greek word hermeneuo, which means to convey (a thought or desire), explain (a speech), and translate (something from one language to another). This word is related to the god Hermes, a god in Greek mythology whose job is to convey the message of the gods to humans as recipients. Hermeneutics has always been used as the science and art of interpreting Scripture. It is important to note that hermeneutics is closely related to biblical studies, such as canon studies, textual criticism, historical criticism, exegesis, biblical theology and systematic theology.
