<p>The increasing and spreading of population in Bukittinggi emerges several environmental problem, such as; the population density above 500 people per hectare, air pollution, traffic congestion, limited sources of clean water, limited green space for the people, poor sanitation, and drainage, and the poor of city planning and construction. One of the crucial issues of environmental management is the low participation and awareness of the community on the waste management even they are the strong adheres of religion beliefs and culture. How the public narration and opinion on the awareness of preserving the environment so that it affects the participation of the Muslim communities on the environmental management is a phenomenon that will be answered in this study. This qualitative study has found that the narration of Muslim community awareness does not affect their participation on the environmental management, especially community-based waste in Bukittinggi City, which in general has not been going properly. There are other factors outside of the religious awareness and cultural factors in the lack of community participation, such as, the implementation of regulations and environmental policies and the absence of certain planning in the management of community-based solid waste management because of several obstacles including the lack of community awareness, the absence of waste management and limited funding processing.</p><p> </p><p class="abstrak"><em>Pertambahan</em><em> </em><em>jumlah</em><em> </em><em>dan penyebaran penduduk di Kota Bukittinggi menimbulkan persoalan lingkungan  seperti; kepadatan jumlah penduduk di atas 500 jiwa per hektar, polusi udara,  kemacetan lalu lintas, </em><em> terbatasnya sumber </em><em>a</em><em>i</em><em>r </em><em> </em><em>bersih/minum, terbatasnya ruang terbuka hijau bagi warga, buruknya sanitasi dan drainase, serta jeleknya penataan kota dan pembangunan. Salah satu persoalan krusial dalam pengelolaan lingkungan</em><em> seperti</em><em> persoalan sampah</em><em> adalah rendahnya partisipasi dan kesadaran masyarakat yang notabenenya kuat menganut keyakinan agama dan kultur budaya</em><em>.</em><em> Bagaimana narasi dan opini masyarakat terhadap kesadaran menjaga lingkungan sehingga mempengaruhi partisipasi masyarakat Muslim dalam pengelolaan lingkungan hidup merupakan fenomena yang akan dijawab dalam penelitian ini</em><em>. Penelitian Kualitatif ini </em><em>telah </em><em>menemukan bahwa </em><em>narasi tentang kesadaran masyarakat Muslim tidak mempengaruhi partisipasi mereka </em><em>dalam</em><em> pengelolaan lingkungan terutama sa</em><em>m</em><em>pah berbasis masyarakat di </em><em>K</em><em>ota Bukittinggi</em><em> yang</em><em> secara umum belum berjalan dengan baik</em><em>. Kampung Rawajati di Jakarta yang menerapkan sistem pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat merupakan alternatif upaya mengatasi sampah rumah tangga. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh sistem tersebut terhadap penurunan berat sampah rumah tangga. Dengan desain studi potong lintang, penelitian ini dilakukan pada sampel 175 ibu rumah tangga yang dipilih secara acak. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat dapat menurunkan berat sampah sebesar 28,3%. Analisis regresi linier ganda memperlihatkan bahwa kegiatan pengelolaan yang berpengaruh terhadap penurunan berat sampah adalah kegiatan reuse, daur ulang, dan pembuatan kompos (nilai-p < 0,05). Pembuatan kompos merupakan variabel yang berkontribusi terhadap penurunan berat sampah 657,3 gram setelah dikontrol variabel perancu. Penurunan berat sampah ditemukan lebih besar pada rumah tangga yang mendapat pelatihan. Tidak ada perbedaan penurunan berat sampah menurut jumlah anggota keluarga, penghasilan rumah tangga, dan pengetahuan ibu. Disarankan agar Pemerintah DKI Jakarta dapat melakukan replikasi model pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat kepada wilayah lainnya, dengan memberikan pelatihan pengelolaan sampah kepada masyarakat.Kata kunci : Pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat, berat sampah, pengolahan dan minimasi sampahAbstractKampung Rawajati in Jakarta applies community-based solid waste management system as an alternative way to overcome household waste problem. The objective of the research is to assess the effect of community-based solid waste management on reduction of household waste weight. This study has crosssectional study design and was conducted on 175 housewife as respondent who were selected randomly. The data was collected by interview using structured questionnaire and weighing of household waste. The result shows that the community-based solid waste management can reduce 28.3% of household waste weight (weight before: 1.845 gram/house/day and after: 1.324 gram/house/day). Multiple linear regression analysis shows that variables affecting thereduction of solid waste including re-using activity, recycling, and composting (p-value <0.05). Composting represents the biggest effect to reduction (657.26 gram) after controlled by potential confounders. The reduction was higher among household with waste training and number of trained household member. It was found that number of family member, family income, and mother knowledge are not significant. It was recommended to the Government of DKI Jakarta to replicate this community-based waste management system to other regions by providing training facilities on solid waste management.Keywords: Community-based on solid waste management, waste weight, processing and minimizing of solid waste

Generation of solid waste (SW) is a major problem in urban areas, thus its management is one of the important obligatory functions to not only urban local authority but also for the inhabitants. The citizens expressed their concerns about the waste management system in KCC and associated problems that they are encountering. Waste generation in Khulna City Corporation is around 455 tons of municipal solid waste/day and generation rate is now 0.75 Kg/capita/day on an average. Existing public utility services and facilities are not adequate to meet the demand of disposing these massive amounts of wastes and that’s why several problems are arising. There are some deterrents in the KCC’s solid waste Management system, arising from both the city corporation authority and the citizen of different levels. With a view to address the problem from through community participation, this paper intends to evaluate the potential of community based solid waste management approach in context of Khulna city.

Purpose: The study was therefore done to evaluate the Efficiency of Solid Waste Management Programs in Kenya- specifically Kilifi County, being guided by four specific objectives; How Public-Private Partnership(X1), Community Participation (X2), Budget Allocation (X3) and Government Policy (X4) Influence Effective SWM Programs in Kilifi county.Methodology: Descriptive design with the target population of 1,453,787drawn from Kilifi County where multistage and random sampling techniques gave sample size of 72 subjects. Data was captured using questionnaires. Data analysis was through descriptive statistics and chi square to ascertain effect of the variables using SPSS.Findings: Findings were that all the four variables of the study indeed have effect to SWM programs in Kenya.  X1 Hypothesis test results revealed that the calculated χ2(223.4 = P< .001). While X2 indicated that, the Cχ2 =268.5 = P-value in the asymptotic significance column was 0.00001. X3 revealed Cχ2 =216.9 where P-value was .00001. And X4 established χ2C=201.88 with P Value and P-value was 0.0001. The study rejected all the HO and accepted H1 which established there was relationship between all the study variables and waste management programs. Illustration of R=0.532 represents the simple correlation; therefore, a moderate positive linear relationship among independent variables and effective SWM programs in Kenya existed. R2=0.283 which indicated the total difference the dependent variable is clarified by the independent variables. In this case, the four independent variables explained 28.3% of the variability in effective SWM programs in Kenya and 72.7% variation in sustainable implementation being described by external issues not discussed in this research project. Regression analysis was done model equation; Effective SWM Programs (Y) =3.197+ 0.188 Public-Private Partnership (X1) + 0.213 (Community Participation (X2) + 0.177 (Budget Allocation (X3) + 0.080(Government Policies (X4). The model described that all the elements had a positive influence on the effective SWM programs. This regression equation proved that when all other elements are held constant (no determinants or elements) effective SWM programs would be 3.197. The study concluded, public-private partnership and availability and proper management of budget allocation as key determinants of effectiveness of the SWM programs.Unique contribution to theory, policy and practice: It also uncovered that community participation greatly weighs in on the performance of SWM programs thus improved greatly efficiency and effectiveness of the programs. Lastly, proper government policies must be imposed to ensure legal policy and regulatory frameworks to ensure proper governance of SWM programs and sustainability. Future research required in all Counties across the Country. This will bring relevant information that could be useful for policy framework that   focuses on to promoting effectiveness of the SWM in Kenya.

Management of wastes which is a part of the daily activities of man is an important aspect of environmental management. Over the years, there have been concerted efforts made towards adequately solving the problems created by improper waste management and disposal in Nigeria cities. This study, appraises environmental management in cities; a perspective from the Ondo state Waste Management Authority (OSWMA) Akure. The broad objectives of this study are to identify types of wastes managed by OSWMA, describe the attitude and role of residents (household) toward solid waste management, and examine the possible constraints faced by OSWMA, Akure in the discharge of their duties. Samples were drawn from the total number of OSWMA staff and clients served by the authority in the core, transition and peripheral districts of Akure. 53 questionnaires were administered to the staff representing 10% of the total number of staff while 324 questionnaires representing 1% of residents were administered, collated and analyzed using SPSS version 19. The results of the analysis, revealed that majority (81.1%) of the staff respondents opined that the type of waste managed by the Authority is solid waste; using the door to door method of solid waste collection as submitted by 54.5% of the staff. On the other hand, majority of the households’ respondents (81.4%) expressed willingness to pay for service rendered by the authority. Findings also revealed that poor funding was the main constraints faced by the authority. The study therefore recommends proper funding, provision of equipment and facilities needed for smooth running of the authority in order to ensure effective collection and management of waste in the study area.

Solid waste management is a grave concern for Bangladesh as by 2025 waste generation per capita will be 0.75 kg/capita/day and total amount of waste will reach 21.07 million tons per year. This chapter attempts to uncover the facts regarding waste management along with the policies and regulations existing in Bangladesh by reviewing published secondary documents. The chapter also contains emerging issues of agricultural, industrial, hazardous, construction, and electronic generation and 3R practices in Bangladesh. Legal instruments for waste management in Bangladesh are also examined. It has been found that enforcing authorities lack the capacity to implement their strategies regarding 3R practices for waste management. Case studies about community-based approach, waste recycling sector, and medical waste management have been exemplified in this chapter. Finally, the authors apprised the issues and challenges of sustainable solid waste management practices and proposed the way forward for Bangladesh to have sustainable solid waste management.

ABSTRAKKegiatan daur ulang sampah di Kota Semarang dapat dilakukan dengan cukup baik berkat campur tangan dari sektor informal. Sayangnya, kegiatan pengelolaan sampah formal tidak mempertimbangkan nilai pemulihan sampah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi aliran sampah plastik di sektor informal di Kota Semarang. Peneliti menggunakan wawancara mendalam untuk mengumpulkan data. Ada 46 agen daur ulang, termasuk lima (5) pemulung, 17 pengepul 20 perusahaan skala kecil, tiga (3) perusahaan skala besar, dan 1 perantara (pabrik penggilingan plastik) yang telah diwawancarai. Data dari Badan Lingkungan Hidup Kota Semarang digunakan sebagai data sekunder. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah sampah plastik yang dihasilkan oleh masing-masing agen daur ulang diperkirakan 23,98 kg/ hari di tingkat pemulung, 54,74 kg/ hari di tingkat pengepul, 347,48 kg / hari di tingkat perusahaan skala kecil, 1.735,3 kg / hari di tingkat perusahaan skala besar, dan 2.160 kg / hari di tingkat perantara. Produsen bijih plastik daur ulang berlokasi di luar Kota Semarang, sedangkan bank sampah berbasis masyarakat adalah bagian dari pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat yang tidak mencari keuntungan. Oleh karena itu, tidak dibahas secara mendalam di penelitian ini.Kata kunci: sampah plastik, aliran sampah, agen daur ulangABSTRACTWaste recycling activities in Semarang City can be conducted quite well due to the interference of the informal sector. Unfortunately,  the formal waste management activities do not consider the utilization of waste recovery value. This study aims to identify the flow of plastic waste in the informal sector in Semarang City. We used in-depth interviews to collect data. There are 46 recycling agents, including five (5) scavengers, 17 scrap dealers, 20 small scale enterprises, three (3) large scale enterprises, and 1 intermediate (plastic grinding mill) that has been interviewed. Data from The Environment Agency of Semarang City obtained as secondary data. The results showed that the amount of plastic waste generated by each recycling agent was estimated at 23.98 kg/day at the scavenger level, 54.74 kg/day at the scrap dealer level, 347.48 kg/day at the small scale enterprise level, 1,735.3 kg / day days at large scale enterprise level, and 2,160 kg/day at the level of plastic waste intermediates. Recycled plastic ore producers are located outside Semarang City, whereas the community-based waste bank is part of community based solid waste management that is not looking for profit. Hence, it is not discussed in depth in this study.Keywords: plastic waste, waste flow, recycling agent
