ABSTRAKKegiatan daur ulang sampah di Kota Semarang dapat dilakukan dengan cukup baik berkat campur tangan dari sektor informal. Sayangnya, kegiatan pengelolaan sampah formal tidak mempertimbangkan nilai pemulihan sampah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi aliran sampah plastik di sektor informal di Kota Semarang. Peneliti menggunakan wawancara mendalam untuk mengumpulkan data. Ada 46 agen daur ulang, termasuk lima (5) pemulung, 17 pengepul 20 perusahaan skala kecil, tiga (3) perusahaan skala besar, dan 1 perantara (pabrik penggilingan plastik) yang telah diwawancarai. Data dari Badan Lingkungan Hidup Kota Semarang digunakan sebagai data sekunder. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah sampah plastik yang dihasilkan oleh masing-masing agen daur ulang diperkirakan 23,98 kg/ hari di tingkat pemulung, 54,74 kg/ hari di tingkat pengepul, 347,48 kg / hari di tingkat perusahaan skala kecil, 1.735,3 kg / hari di tingkat perusahaan skala besar, dan 2.160 kg / hari di tingkat perantara. Produsen bijih plastik daur ulang berlokasi di luar Kota Semarang, sedangkan bank sampah berbasis masyarakat adalah bagian dari pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat yang tidak mencari keuntungan. Oleh karena itu, tidak dibahas secara mendalam di penelitian ini.Kata kunci: sampah plastik, aliran sampah, agen daur ulangABSTRACTWaste recycling activities in Semarang City can be conducted quite well due to the interference of the informal sector. Unfortunately,  the formal waste management activities do not consider the utilization of waste recovery value. This study aims to identify the flow of plastic waste in the informal sector in Semarang City. We used in-depth interviews to collect data. There are 46 recycling agents, including five (5) scavengers, 17 scrap dealers, 20 small scale enterprises, three (3) large scale enterprises, and 1 intermediate (plastic grinding mill) that has been interviewed. Data from The Environment Agency of Semarang City obtained as secondary data. The results showed that the amount of plastic waste generated by each recycling agent was estimated at 23.98 kg/day at the scavenger level, 54.74 kg/day at the scrap dealer level, 347.48 kg/day at the small scale enterprise level, 1,735.3 kg / day days at large scale enterprise level, and 2,160 kg/day at the level of plastic waste intermediates. Recycled plastic ore producers are located outside Semarang City, whereas the community-based waste bank is part of community based solid waste management that is not looking for profit. Waste is generated by various day to day human activities. Adopting improper waste handling and disposal methods can harm the well-being of public and environment. Waste management creates new opportunities for entrepreneurs in terms of social causes and it affects the economic structure and economic status of any country. One of the new approaches in waste management and income generation is Social entrepreneurship. But in Bharat i.e. India the young entrepreneurs have a dearth of consciousness towards social entrepreneurship. This paper discusses the status of solid waste management in India and Government initiatives for managing Solid Waste at Dharamshala. The main objectives of study are 1) to check awareness of people in managing solid waste at Dharamsala 2) and how to convert the plastic waste into theme based parks as skilled initiative for entrepreneurs at tourist spots in Himachal Pradesh. The paper thus explores the scope for entrepreneurs in waste management. The study reveals that Solid waste management concept attracted the attention of government around 1970s. But till now we believe in filling the waste in the ground or putting them in the dustbin. Government of India has created few acts and rules on waste management which are listed in this paper. Through this study it is revealed that people of Dharamshala welcome to the construction of themed parks made from plastic bottles. Majority of these people believe in separating waste at home and according to them conditions of waste disposal at Dharamshala are not very good. There is a positive correlation between people’s opinion of constructing theme parks and using plastic bottles in park’s construction. Study believes that the quantity of plastic waste in our country is endless which creates lot scope and opportunity to the social entrepreneurs.

Kampung Rawajati di Jakarta yang menerapkan sistem pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat merupakan alternatif upaya mengatasi sampah rumah tangga. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh sistem tersebut terhadap penurunan berat sampah rumah tangga. Dengan desain studi potong lintang, penelitian ini dilakukan pada sampel 175 ibu rumah tangga yang dipilih secara acak. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat dapat menurunkan berat sampah sebesar 28,3%. Analisis regresi linier ganda memperlihatkan bahwa kegiatan pengelolaan yang berpengaruh terhadap penurunan berat sampah adalah kegiatan reuse, daur ulang, dan pembuatan kompos (nilai-p < 0,05). Pembuatan kompos merupakan variabel yang berkontribusi terhadap penurunan berat sampah 657,3 gram setelah dikontrol variabel perancu. Penurunan berat sampah ditemukan lebih besar pada rumah tangga yang mendapat pelatihan. Tidak ada perbedaan penurunan berat sampah menurut jumlah anggota keluarga, penghasilan rumah tangga, dan pengetahuan ibu. Disarankan agar Pemerintah DKI Jakarta dapat melakukan replikasi model pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat kepada wilayah lainnya, dengan memberikan pelatihan pengelolaan sampah kepada masyarakat.Kata kunci : Pengelolaan sampah berbasis masyarakat, berat sampah, pengolahan dan minimasi sampahAbstractKampung Rawajati in Jakarta applies community-based solid waste management system as an alternative way to overcome household waste problem. The objective of the research is to assess the effect of community-based solid waste management on reduction of household waste weight. This study has crosssectional study design and was conducted on 175 housewife as respondent who were selected randomly. The data was collected by interview using structured questionnaire and weighing of household waste. The result shows that the community-based solid waste management can reduce 28.3% of household waste weight (weight before: 1.845 gram/house/day and after: 1.324 gram/house/day). Multiple linear regression analysis shows that variables affecting thereduction of solid waste including re-using activity, recycling, and composting (p-value <0.05). Composting represents the biggest effect to reduction (657.26 gram) after controlled by potential confounders. The reduction was higher among household with waste training and number of trained household member. It was found that number of family member, family income, and mother knowledge are not significant. It was recommended to the Government of DKI Jakarta to replicate this community-based waste management system to other regions by providing training facilities on solid waste management.Keywords: Community-based on solid waste management, waste weight, processing and minimizing of solid waste

Generation of solid waste (SW) is a major problem in urban areas, thus its management is one of the important obligatory functions to not only urban local authority but also for the inhabitants. The citizens expressed their concerns about the waste management system in KCC and associated problems that they are encountering. Waste generation in Khulna City Corporation is around 455 tons of municipal solid waste/day and generation rate is now 0.75 Kg/capita/day on an average. Existing public utility services and facilities are not adequate to meet the demand of disposing these massive amounts of wastes and that’s why several problems are arising. There are some deterrents in the KCC’s solid waste Management system, arising from both the city corporation authority and the citizen of different levels. With a view to address the problem from through community participation, this paper intends to evaluate the potential of community based solid waste management approach in context of Khulna city.

Plastic waste pollution in marine environments is considered a major environmental problem in coastal areas. Relative environmental problems are also recorded in protected wetlands. The National Park of Amvrakikos Wetlands, one of the largest wetlands of Greece, is studied in order to evaluate the influence of plastic waste in the protected area and its surroundings, according to the stakeholders’ views. The survey applied using the method of census addressing the key stakeholders in the area of interest and the use of a questionnaire; the data analyzed with the Statistical Package SSPS. The main findings reveal that waste management is not considered satisfactory in the broader area. Marine litter, pollution, overfishing, ecosystem degradation, agriculture and livestock activities, as well as the insufficiency of the municipal solid waste management and recycling system are listed as the most important environmental problems of the coastal area. The stakeholders’ participation is regarded as crucial for effective decision making. Therefore, special strategies should be designed involving Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to widely address the local communities and increase their awareness on the problem in order to reduce plastic waste pollution. It should be noted that environmental conditions are closely affiliated with the citizens’ quality of life.

Solid waste management is a grave concern for Bangladesh as by 2025 waste generation per capita will be 0.75 kg/capita/day and total amount of waste will reach 21.07 million tons per year. This chapter attempts to uncover the facts regarding waste management along with the policies and regulations existing in Bangladesh by reviewing published secondary documents. The chapter also contains emerging issues of agricultural, industrial, hazardous, construction, and electronic generation and 3R practices in Bangladesh. Legal instruments for waste management in Bangladesh are also examined. It has been found that enforcing authorities lack the capacity to implement their strategies regarding 3R practices for waste management. Case studies about community-based approach, waste recycling sector, and medical waste management have been exemplified in this chapter. Finally, the authors apprised the issues and challenges of sustainable solid waste management practices and proposed the way forward for Bangladesh to have sustainable solid waste management.

The increase of solid waste production is a general problem in municipality, particularly of plastic waste. The durability, light-weight, anticorrosiveness, and inexpensiveness properties of plastic make it favorable to be used in daily life, including in Salatiga. However, plastic is one of some non-biodegradable materials that could lead to soil and water pollution as it contains toxic compounds such as aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, and organochlorine. Various studies in municipal solid waste management have been conducted. While those studies often applied various approaches separately, researches in regard to the role of stakeholders in municipal solid waste management are very limited. This study aims to explain the plastic waste management in Salatiga based on the role of the corresponding stakeholders. This qualitative study shows that there are four stakeholders who were involved in municipal plastic waste management in Salatiga. They were the households who generate wastes, the scavengers who sorts the wastes, Bank Sampah and collectors who have the same role in order to collect the wastes and treat the plastic wastes through reusing or recycling processes, and the government. Currently, efforts in waste treatment in Salatiga are focused on the system of collecting-tranferring-disposal mode, waste treatment by reuse and recycle processing, and landfilling. Reducing plastic consumption must take into account the sociocultural aspect and environmental awareness, as the people still interested to use plastic instead of using other materials in substitution. Finally, the role of government is central to educate the community in term of sorting activities and reducing waste production, build the capacity of Bank Sampah, and manage the role of scavengers and collectors. Other alternatives include creating synergy between the collectors and Bank Sampah, as well as ensuring final treatment of the unprocessed wastes disposed by collectors and Bank Sampah.

The solid waste management is not only necessary for maintaining the hygienic environment but in reducing the probable health hazards. The current study deals with the problems faced by the public due to improper waste management and the behaviour in waste disposal. The data used in our study is both primary and the secondary data. Waste cannot be simply thrown away anymore, now it must be managed. Many materials thrown away could be saved by simple things like reusing glass, the municipal landfill could be reduced by almost 10 percent and there are still many advantages to waste management. Today, more people are in favour of companies who invest in “green products”. As a result, companies have removed phosphates, bleaches, and have made their paper products out of recycled papers. The objective of writing this paper is to study the current practices related to the various waste management initiatives taken in India for human wellbeing. Bhaktapur Municipality has been performing better to keep the city clean. However, scarcity of space for the land filling of the solid waste and proper segregation of waste at the source has been a hurdle for the Municipality. This paper aims to determine solid waste generation rate and to analyze overall situation of solid waste management of Bhaktapur Municipality. However, the data will not represent the seasonal and occasional variations. Additionally, waste from street-sweeping and large-scale institutional and commercial components of the Municipality has not been assessed. Arkin and Colton (1963) was referred for the sample size determination. Sample of 376 households were taken accordingly. Twenty representative samples each for commercial and institutional establishments were selected, and one each for special cases such as hospital, slaughter house and poultry has been assessed. Municipal household waste generation was found to be 0.093kg per capita per day which was chiefly composed of 77% organic, 18% plastic and 3% paper. Organic waste has been a major waste for institutions such as schools whereas at governmental and public offices, paper is the predominantly generated waste. Among commercial establishments, shops and restaurants mostly generate organic waste and that for departmental stores has been paper. Though collection system was found to be satisfactory, treatment and final disposal have been unsustainable. Available treatment facilities have been shut down whereas other infrastructural components have been lacking.
