In the late 1970s, Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae), was targeted for classical biological control in Florida because its invasive properties (see Host Plants) are consistent with escape from natural enemies (Williams 1954), and there are no native Schinus spp. in North America. Assessment of genetic diversity in the available germplasm is the prerequisite for development of improved genotypes through planned breeding programmes. In the view of this Forty-eight genotypes of seedling origin guava along with 1 check (L-49/Sardar) collected and conserved at germplasm block, Main Garden, Department of Horticulture, Dr. P. D. A. University, Akola were evaluated for genetic variability and diversity based on the qualitative characteristics. The genotypes were evaluated for sixteen morphological traitsviz. tree, leaf, floral and fruit traits. Results Show considerable extent of variability amongst the 49 genotypes in each traits. A sizeable amount of intrapopulation diversity recorded can be used to identify diverse parents which can be utilized in hybridization programmes.

Field experiments conducted over a 2-yr period demonstrated that common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. # CYNDA] inhibited growth of newly planted peach (Prunus persica L. ‘Norman’) trees. Common bermudagrass densities of 100, 75, 50, and 25% ground cover reduced tree fresh weight by 86, 64, 43, and 19%, respectively, the first year (1978) and 87, 62, 44, and 28%, respectively, the second year (1979) after planting. Tree trunk diameter relative growth rate (RGR) was reduced by 75 and 100% common bermudagrass ground cover densities at all measurement dates only in 1978. Tree leaf N and K were reduced in both years by common bermudagrass; however, only at the 100% common bermudagrass density in 1978 was N at a deficient level. Leaf chlorophyll was reduced in trees grown in all densities of common bermudagrass only in 1978. Reduced tree growth cannot be explained entirely by competition for essential nutrients; thus an allelopathic effect of the bermudagrass on young peach roots is suspected.

High within- and among-tree crown variation have contributed to the difficulty of tree-crown sampling and single-tree leaf area (area available for photosynthesis) estimation. Using reconstructed trees, simulations were used to compare five sampling designs for bias, mean square error (MSE), and distribution of the estimates. All sampling designs showed nearly zero bias. For most sample trees, stratified random sampling resulted in the lowest MSE values, followed by ellipsoidal, two-stage systematic, simple random, and then by two-stage unequal probability sampling. The poor performance of two-stage unequal probability sampling can be ascribed to the unequal probability of inclusion of first-order branches and twigs.

The present study on olive tuberculosis commenced by isolating bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas from the soils and necrosis of collected olive trees. A total of 180 samples were used in this study: (100) rhizospheric soil samples: (60) samples at the region of Ain Témouchent and (40) at the region of Sig in western of Algeria. In total, (80) galls were collected (40) at branch level and (40) galls at olive tree leaf (level). The isolates were identified by microbiological (macroscopic and microscopic examination), physiological (growth in the presence of Salt (NaCl), growth at different pH values and growth at different temperatures) and biochemical methods (the LOPAT and Galeries Api 20 NE test to identify species of the Pseudomonas group and conventional biochemical tests to identify the subspecies P. syringae pv. Savastanoi).This allowed to identify 110 isolates of Pseudomonas (60 isolates of P. aeruginosa, 35 isolates of P. fluorescens and 15 isolates of P. syringae pv Savastanoi the causal agent of olive node disease) which are now part of the collection of Pseudomonas bacteria of the laboratory of the Biotechnology Department (USTO-MB). The selection of technological performance isolates useful for our agriculture could solve phytopathological problems and finally constitute a collection of the bacteria preserved.
