The field experiment was carried out at the research farm of Horticulture Garden, Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour, Bhagalpur during 2014-15 for assessment of genetic variability among different genotypes of cape gooseberry in India. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications having twelve genotypes. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the traits studies which suggesting sufficient variability for yield and quality parameters. The overall values of phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were higher than those of genetic coefficient of variation (GCV). Higher magnitude of GCV and PCV were recorded for fruit per plant percent (33.30 and 36.61) followed by fruit diameter, fruit weight and flowers per branch. The maximum GCV (33.30) and PCV (36.61) were recorded in fruits/plant respectively. The high values of GCV are the indication of excess variability among the genotypes and thus the scope for crop improvement depends on the selection of superior parents for crossing to get better parents for hybridization. In present study, the magnitude of heritability ranged from 37% to 98% indicating that these traits are controlled by additive gene action which is very useful in selection. The traits like plant girth, plant height, inter nodal length, appearance of 50% of flowering, bud break to full bloom, number of flowers per branch, number of fruits set per branch, duration of fruit set to maturity, fruit weight, fruit diameter and number of fruits per plant with high GCV, PCV, heritability and genetic advance as percentage of mean, indicating that these characters are under additive gene effects and more reliable for effective selection.

The success of varietal development programmme largely depends on the nature and magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and characters association of the crop. The objective of the present study was to estimate the extent of genetic variability and relation between yield and related characters of rice. Forty Boro rice germplasm were evaluated in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Analysis of variance indicated significant differences among the genotypes for 14 quantitative characters. The presence of slightly higher phenotypic coefficient of variation than genotypic coefficient of variation indicated the negligible influence of environment on the expression of yield and its component traits. Leaf length, days to flowering, days to maturity and 1000 grain weight showed highly positive significant correlation present with yield hill-1. High heritability had been observed for yield contributing traits during the study, suggested that these traits would respond to selection owing to their high genetic variability and transmissibility. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the inheritance of traits, their heritability and relationship with other important characteristics is important for the choice of breeding and selection methods for crop improvement. Combining ability and heterosis studies carried out using half diallel method with six parents for nine characters. The analysis revealed that none of the parents was found good general combiner for all the characters consistently, however the parents P2, P3, P4 and P5 were best general combiner’s for yield and flowering traits. The gca variance for node order to first female flower open, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, average fruit weight, fruits per plant, yield per plant and TSS was higher than the sca variance. While the days to first female flower open had lower gca value than the sca variance indicating the predominance of non-additive gene effects. Five crosses P1×P4, P3×P6, P4×P2, P5×P3 and P5×P6 found promising and should be maintained for development of future hybrid varieties for their sca effect and desirable level of heterosis.

An experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design to estimate genetic variability of ten rice genotypes. Analysis of variance for yield and yield contributing traits showed significant (p<0.01) variation among the genotypes. Results of genetic analyses showed a higher phenotypic coefficient of variation compared to their corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation for all the traits measured, which indicates that the traits were influenced by environment. The magnitude of difference between phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) was less for the traits indicating little influence of environment. The higher estimates of PCV and GCV were observed for number of filled grains panicle–1 (27.53; 26.84), number of unfilled grains panicle–1 (26.76;25.28) and plant height (23.14; 23.00) indicates possibility of genetic improvement through direct selection for these traits, while days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, panicle length, number of effective tillers plant–1, fertility (%), 1000 Seed weight and yield panicle–1 showed low PCV and GCV values indicating the need for creation of variability by hybridization or mutation followed by selection. High heritability values (>60%) along with high genetic advance and genetic advance as percentage of mean were found for all the traits indicating prevalence of additive gene action, which provides good scope for further improvement by selection.J. Genetic variability in a crop population is important for successful plant breeding. Eight cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) genotypes namely Green Long, Simran, Bhaktapur Local, Saihni-2, Ninja-179, Garima, Farmer’s variety and  wild genotype were evaluated at Lamahi Municipality, Dang district of Nepal to estimate the magnitude of their genetic variability and heritability. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for growth and yield traits. The estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were highest for weight of fruit whereas traits namely fruit length, fruit diameter and days to maturity had medium value for both GCV and PCV. Broad sense heritability estimates  ranged from 0.74 for fruit diameter to 0.98 for days to germination. Fruit yield showed high significant positive correlation with fruit diameter (r= 0.649) and negative significant correlation (r= -0.538) with days to flowering. Traits namely weight per fruit, days of germination, no. of flower and days to flowering can be used effectively in selection process of crop improvement program as they had high GCV, PCV and heritability along with high genetic advance as percentage of mean.

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>An experiment on eighteen genotypes of tomato was conducted at Lembang station (RIV) (1250 m asl) in 1999/2000 planting season to characterize their phenotypic performance, growth type and yield. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Block Design with 18 two replications. Genotypes tested were introduction and landraces. Phenotypic performance growth type fruit color and productive branch number were realtively uniparm while head of plant, fruit diameter, fruit thick and plant age had were different. Tomato lines FMTT 270, FMTT 22 and FMTT 95 had healthy fruit weight per plant, fruit diameter and good thickness at Lembang highland. Lokereal tomato lines PT 4289, PT 4226, PT 4165, and PT 4121 had earlier harvested, to be further use as breeding material.</p><p><strong>Abstrak</strong></p><p>Delapan belas galur koleksi plasma nutfah tomat lokal dan introduksi telah dikarakterisasi di KP Balitsa (1250 m dpl) pada MT 1999/2000 untuk melihat karakter pertumbuhan, hasil, dan komponen hasil. Percobaan ditata dalam rancangan acak kelompok dengan dua ulangan. Berdasarkan gugus rata-rata Scott-Knott diketahui bahwa tipe tumbuh, warna buah, dan jumlah cabang produktif genotipe relatif seragam, sedangkan tinggi tanaman, jumlah dan bobot buah per tanaman, diameter buah, ketebalan daging, dan umur tanaman relatif berbeda. Galur FMTT 270, FMTT 22, dan FMTT 95 mempunyai bobot buah sehat dan ketebalan daging buah yang baik di dataran tinggi Lembang, dan galur PT 4289, PT 4226, PT 4165, dan PT 4121 berumur genjah sehingga diharapkan dapat digunakan sebagai bahan pemuliaan lebih lanjut.</p>

Twenty two promising Desi chickpea genotypes were grown in RBD with two replications under normal and late sown high temperature conditions with objective to estimate genetic variability for seed yield and its attributing traits to identify potential genotypes for heat tolerance. The maximum genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variability (GCV and PCV) were observed for number of seeds per pod, 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant under both environments, whereas number of primary branches per plant recorded minimum in late planting conditions. The high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean (GAM) was observed for all traits except days to maturity, plant height and number of pods per plant under both environments but the harvest index recorded moderate heritability coupled with low GAM in late planting conditions. This implies the presence of more additive gene effects for potential crop improvement. On the basis of mean performance for important economic traits under both environments, the genotypes ICCV 92944, Annigeri-1, JG-6, RSG-888, RSG-945 and ICCV-10 were identified as best performer for the number of pods per plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield per plant and harvest index, as well as these genotypes were identified as heat tolerant for the respective traits. The genotype ICCV 10 had stable for yield and yield related traits over both environments, therefore it could be tested over locations for stability verification and for further use in breeding program.

Soybean, an important legume crop, serves as a good source of protein and oil with tremendous ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen for soil improvement. To study the genetic variability, genotypic, phenotypic and environmental coefficient of variation, broad sense heritability and genetic advance in soybean, a field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2013. The experiment, laid out in a randomized block design (RBD) with three replications, comprised of 24 genotypes and observations on 9 traits of soybean were recorded. In this experiment, analysis of variance indicated that significant variation were present among the different genotypes of the soybean for all the traits under study. The highest genotypic (GCV) and phonotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were exhibited by the test weight, number of pods per plant, harvest index and plant height. The PCV was found higher than GCV which indicates the important role of environment in the expression of the characters. High heritability and high genetic advance were observed in the test weight, number of pods per plant, harvest index and plant height. The combination of the high heritability and high genetic advance provide the clear image of the trait in the selection process for crop improvement programme.

A field experiment was carried out with 34 genotypes of Balsam (Impatiens balsamina L.) to assess the variability, heritability and genetic advance with an objective to identify superior genotypes for further crop improvement programme. The experiment was conducted during rainy season 2014 at the Horticulture Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. These genotypes show significant variation at 5% level of significance for different characters under study. Highest range of variation was reported with the number of flowers/plant (109-221). The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) was maximum for seed yield/plant, i.e. 29.02 and  26.34 while, minimum in case of length of leaf, i.e.  8.35 and 6.48, respectively. High heritability was observed for all the characters except plant height, width of leaves and duration of flowering. Maximum heritability was recorded for duration of flowering (90.68%) and minimum was observed in width of leaf (30.04). High heritability (h2 = 90.64) with high genetic advance (GA= 71.36) as percentage of mean was observed for number of flowers/plant, which indicated that additive gene effects were more important for that trait. High genetic advance as per cent of mean was observed for number of flowers/plant (71.36) however, lowest for floral bud diameter (0.11) which indicates the preponderance of additive genes and selection will be effective for improvement of these traits.

Fifty three genotypes collected from IRRI, Philipines and one variety from research station were grown in randomized block design with three replications under three environments during rabi (dry) season 2013-14. Significant mean squares for genotypes indicated the presence of variability for all the characters under study. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was higher than the genetic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters studied. Small differences between GCV and PCV were recorded for most of the characters studied which indicated less influence of environment. The high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was observed for the characters viz., grains per panicle, straw yield per plant, grain yield per plant and 1000 grain weight indicate that most likely the heritability is due to additive gene effects and selection may be effective.

ABSTRACT Knowledge about associations between traits is fundamental for plant breeding, since indirect selection can accelerate the development of promising genotypes. This study assessed the magnitude of associations between agronomically important traits in fisális (Physalis peruviana L). The experiment was conducted in Lages, Santa Catarina, and the treatments consisted of six fisális populations. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, with two replications and seven plants per plot. The correlations between traits were estimated based on the Pearson correlation coefficients and partitioned into direct and indirect effects through path analysis. Fruit weight was positively correlated with number of seeds (0.874), equatorial fruit diameter (0.738) and polar fruit diameter (0.672). By path analysis, number of seeds was identified as the trait with the highest direct contribution to fruit weight. The high phenotypic correlations between the equatorial and polar fruit diameters with fruit weight were mainly due to the indirect effect via number of seeds (0.505 and 0.459). The selection for heavier fisális fruits was strongly influenced by number of seeds, i.e., this trait should be taken into account for selection.
