Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

Genetic variability in a crop population is important for successful plant breeding. Eight cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) genotypes namely Green Long, Simran, Bhaktapur Local, Saihni-2, Ninja-179, Garima, Farmer’s variety and  wild genotype were evaluated at Lamahi Municipality, Dang district of Nepal to estimate the magnitude of their genetic variability and heritability. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for growth and yield traits. The estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were highest for weight of fruit whereas traits namely fruit length, fruit diameter and days to maturity had medium value for both GCV and PCV. Broad sense heritability estimates  ranged from 0.74 for fruit diameter to 0.98 for days to germination. Fruit yield showed high significant positive correlation with fruit diameter (r= 0.649) and negative significant correlation (r= -0.538) with days to flowering. Traits namely weight per fruit, days of germination, no. of flower and days to flowering can be used effectively in selection process of crop improvement program as they had high GCV, PCV and heritability along with high genetic advance as percentage of mean.

Abstract Information on genetic variability in cowpea germplasm is important for crop improvement and for efficient utilization of the existing genetic resources. Hence, the objectives of the present investigation were to estimate genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and to identify divergent parents from distantly related clusters among Ethiopian cowpea accessions. The field experiment was carried out using 42 accessions at Abergelle Agricultural Research Center on station during the 2019 cropping season. Data were collected for 8 agronomic traits and analysis of variance revealed significant differences (p<0.01) among the accessions for the traits studied. Seed yield had higher genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) coupled with the highest genetic advance as percent of mean (100%). All the traits had moderate (68.01) to very high (99.98%) broad sense heritability. Further, high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was attained for days to flowering, grain filling period, plant height, pod length, seed yield and thousand seed weight reflecting the presence of additive gene action for the expression of these traits and improvement of these traits could be done through selection. The cluster analysis based on agronomic traits revealed four distinct groups at 90% similarity level. The highest inter cluster D2 was recorded between cluster III and cluster IV (D2=133.69 units). The range of inter cluster distance was 15.25 to 133.69 units, respectively. In conclusion, the high genetic distance revealed among clusters has to be exploited via crossing and selection of the most divergent parents for future cowpea improvement program.

Assessing and understanding the variations existing in crops due to genetic composition and environmental variability is very important in order to exploit the genetic constitution of crop plants. To this aim, variability measures such as phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) are commonly used. Heritability and genetic advance are major concerns for common bean to identify important traits for common bean genetic improvement. The field experiment was conducted at Mandura and Dibatie research substations working with sixteen genotypes of the common bean during 2017/2018 in lattice design with three replications to evaluate the performance of common bean genotypes and estimate the genetic variability. Heritability and genetic advance were estimated in relation to yield and its component traits for future breeding programs. Combined analysis of variance across locations revealed highly significant variations among genotypes for all traits under study. The PCV ranged from 3.36% for days to flowering to 15.91% for a number of pods per plant while the GCV value ranged from 0.75% for days to flowering to 13.74% for the number of pods per plant. Broad sense heritability values ranged from 5.00% for days to flowering to 84.61% for a hundred seed weight. Generally, the result of the study showed that significant genetic variability among tested genotypes and a simple selection for effective improvement of these traits. Twelve exotic cultivars of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) were grown to assess the presence of variability for desired traits and amount of variation for different parameters. Genetic parameters, correlations, partial correlation and regressions were estimated for all the traits. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among entries for all the characters. The estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were high for yield per plant, fruits per plant, fruit weight and fruit length. Broad sense heritability estimates for various traits ranged from 42.26 to 89.55%. Fruit yield per plant showed high significant positive correlation with fruits per plant, fruit weight, flesh thickness, fruit diameter and leaves per plant. Partial correlation was significant for fruits per plant and indicated these traits contributed over 70% to total fruit yield. By variability, correlation and regression analysis it was concluded that more fruits per plant and more fruit weight are major yield contributing factors in selecting high yielding cucumber cultivars.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjpbg.v25i1.17008

This study aims to determine the effect of fertilizing nutrients that can increase the growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) with hydroponic techniques. The research was conducted at the screen house of the Biotechnology Lab Research and Development Division of PT East West Seed Indonesia, in Benteng Village, Campaka District, Purwakarta Regency. This research was conducted in December 2017 until March 2018. This study used a randomized block design (RBD) with 9 replications. Planting factor is a nutrient solution consisting of N1 enza nutrition, N2 alfesindo nutrition, and N3 ewindo nutrition. Parameters observed were plant height, plant dry weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of planted fruit and crop fruit weight. The media used in this study was roasted husk charcoal. The results showed that the response of nutrient solutions was significantly different from observations of plant height, whereas the response of nutrient solutions to observations of dry weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of fruit plantations and fruit weight of plantations were not significantly different. The results showed that the best nutritional solution was ewindo nutritional solution.

Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dosis kompos jerami dan pemangkasan terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman mentimun sehingga dapat menghasilkan pupuk yang ekonomis dan berproduksi tinggi untuk penanaman mentimun serta interaksi kedua faktor tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK)  pola faktorial 4 x 3 dengan 3 ulangan yang terdiri dari 2 faktor. Pengamatan yang diteliti yaitu panjang tanaman, umur berbunga, jumlah bunga betina, diameter buah, jumlah buah pertanaman, panjang buah, berat buah pertanaman, berat per buah dan potensi hasil. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dosis kompos jerami berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap diameter buah dan berpengaruh nyata terhadap berat per buah mentimun. Dosis terbaik pada hasil tanaman mentimun dijumpai pada perlakuan dosis kompos jerami 30 dan 20 ton/ha. Pada faktor pemangkasan berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap panjang tanaman 21 HSPT dan 28 HSPT serta berpengaruh nyata terhadap jumlah bunga betina, panjang buah, berat buah per tanaman, berat per buah dan potensi hasil. pemangkasan terbaik pada pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman mentimun dijumpai pada perlakuan tanpa pemangkasan dan pemangkasan tunas pada ruas 6-10.Effect of Straw Compost Dosage And Pruning on Growth and Cucumber Plant Results (cucumis sativus L.)Abstract : This study aims to determine the dosage of straw compost and pruning to the growth and yield of cucumber plants so as to produce fertilizer that is economical and high production for cucumber planting as well as interaction of these two factors. This study used Randomized Block Design (RAK) 4 x 3 factorial pattern with 3 replications consisting of 2 factors. Observations observed were plant length, flowering age, number of female flowers, fruit diameter, number of fruit crops, fruit length, fruit crop weight, weight per fruit and yield potential. The results of this study indicate that the dosage of straw compost has a very significant effect on the fruit diameter and has a significant effect on the weight per cucumber fruit. The best doses on cucumber yields were found in the treatment of straw compost doses of 30 and 20 tons / ha. In the pruning factor very significant effect on the length of plants 21 HSPT and 28 HSPT and significantly affect the number of female flowers, fruit length, fruit weight per plant, weight per fruit and yield potential. the best pruning on growth and yield of cucumber crops was found in the treatment without pruning and pruning of shoots in the 6-10 segments.

Soybean, an important legume crop, serves as a good source of protein and oil with tremendous ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen for soil improvement. To study the genetic variability, genotypic, phenotypic and environmental coefficient of variation, broad sense heritability and genetic advance in soybean, a field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2013. The experiment, laid out in a randomized block design (RBD) with three replications, comprised of 24 genotypes and observations on 9 traits of soybean were recorded. In this experiment, analysis of variance indicated that significant variation were present among the different genotypes of the soybean for all the traits under study. The highest genotypic (GCV) and phonotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were exhibited by the test weight, number of pods per plant, harvest index and plant height. The PCV was found higher than GCV which indicates the important role of environment in the expression of the characters. High heritability and high genetic advance were observed in the test weight, number of pods per plant, harvest index and plant height. The combination of the high heritability and high genetic advance provide the clear image of the trait in the selection process for crop improvement programme.

The selection efficiency for certain traits in crops can be broadened using estimates of genetic parameters, which are fundamental for plant breeding. Ten maize genotypes were evaluated in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications at the field of Lamahi Municipality, Dang district of Nepal to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for growth, yield and yield contributing traits during summer season (June to August), 2018. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for all traits. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was higher than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) recorded for all traits. The grain yield showed the highest PCV (50.78%) and GCV (51.24%) whereas the lowest PCV (4.51%) and GCV (4.50%) were recorded for test weight; test weight showed high heritability (0.99) with low genetic advance as a percent of mean (9.26). Grain yield showed positive and significant phenotypic correlation with test weight (r=0.960), kernel per row (r=0.924), kernel rows per cob (r=0.900) and cob length (r=0.840), respectively. Traits namely grain yield, number of kernels per cob and kernel rows per cob showed high GCV, PCV. Therefore these traits can be used further in crop improvement program. Res. Agric., Livest. The field experiment was carried out at the research farm of Horticulture Garden, Bihar Agricultural College, Sabour, Bhagalpur during 2014-15 for assessment of genetic variability among different genotypes of cape gooseberry in India. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications having twelve genotypes. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the traits studies which suggesting sufficient variability for yield and quality parameters. The overall values of phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were higher than those of genetic coefficient of variation (GCV). Higher magnitude of GCV and PCV were recorded for fruit per plant percent (33.30 and 36.61) followed by fruit diameter, fruit weight and flowers per branch. The maximum GCV (33.30) and PCV (36.61) were recorded in fruits/plant respectively. The high values of GCV are the indication of excess variability among the genotypes and thus the scope for crop improvement depends on the selection of superior parents for crossing to get better parents for hybridization. In present study, the magnitude of heritability ranged from 37% to 98% indicating that these traits are controlled by additive gene action which is very useful in selection. The traits like plant girth, plant height, inter nodal length, appearance of 50% of flowering, bud break to full bloom, number of flowers per branch, number of fruits set per branch, duration of fruit set to maturity, fruit weight, fruit diameter and number of fruits per plant with high GCV, PCV, heritability and genetic advance as percentage of mean, indicating that these characters are under additive gene effects and more reliable for effective selection.

An experiment to study the effect of cow urine applications and dosage of N fertilizer was conducted in Bondowoso, from February to April 2002. A factorial experiment consisted of two factors and the whole treatments were arranged in 3x4 factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The first factor was urine of Cow, consist of U0 = control, U1= 20%, U = 40%. The second factor was dosage of N fertilizer, consist of N1 = 0 kg/ha, N2 = 150 kg/ha, N3 = 300 kg/ha, N4 = 450 kg/ha. The effect of treatments on growth and yield of cucumber were observed. The result showed that there was no interaction between cow urine application and dosage of N fertilizer, except to the fruit diameter. Cow urine application significantly improved the yield of Cucumber, and the 40% application gave the best fruits weight. Dosage of N fertilizer significantly increased the growth and yield of cucumber, and the 450 kg N-fertilizer/ha had the better effects.
