This paper aimed at investigating opportunities and challenges of women’s participation in decision making as little attention was given to opportunities and challenges of women’s participation in decision making at local level. There are few researches on opportunities and challenges of women’s participation in decision making at local level and more focus on opportunities and challenges of women’s participation in agricultural, economical, educational and leadership. The purpose of the study is to explore challenges that women face in their decision making and reflect on the opportunities that are being undertaken by stake holders and local government. A qualitative research method utilized in the study to get an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon. The researcher used case study research design which helps to deeply study a phenomenon. The researcher then employed thematic analysis to come up with findings and discussion. Purposive and referral chain sampling techniques have also been employed in the study. The finding of the study is based on semi-structured-interviews and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Empirical data gathered through interviews and FGD in Debre Tabor City Administration. The research findings indicated that women faced a number of constraints to participate in the decision making at a local level. These constraints were cultural beliefs, illiteracy and low level of education, economic and financial problems, religion, nature, household activities, negative perception of the society, men oppression and chauvinism, lack of confidence and interest among women and weak bureaucracy. Within those challenges, there were opportunities which enabled and designed to maintain women toward the decision making participation. Those opportunities were international law and convention, constitutional and different legal orientation, packages, programmes, policies and initiatives, different governmental structure of women, education, training and awareness, preparation of periodical meeting, economic empowerment and the quota system. The study recommends the creation of an enabling environment for women’s decision making ability empowerment.

Abstract We evaluate the implications of women’s participation in domestic decision-making on diets and investments in human resources in Ethiopian rural households. We create a metric to capture intra-household decision-making, which we use to estimate a positive association between women’s participation in decision-making and household-level dietary diversity. Moreover, we find that an increase in women’s participation in intra-household decision-making is associated with higher financial investments in human resources.

This research discusses the phenomenon of organizational change or restructuring in a multinational company (PT. X) and how leaders in these organizations carry out communication strategies when conveying changes and messages to their employees regarding the rearrangement of organizational structures. What is the leader's role as a liaison or messenger for effective communication at the local level? This research is a qualitative case study research with descriptive research type, and data were obtained through in-depth interviews, researcher observation, and literature study. This case study's primary focus is to understand and describe the production and reception of messages towards organizational change and know the management and employee's perspective during changes communication through leaders. The semi-structured interviews were conducted to find out how communication deploys, and then the message of change can be accepted by employees. Received: 21 October 2020 / Accepted: 23 December 2020 / Published: 5 March 2021

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider the resilience of a national-level initiative (Improving Working Lives (IWL)) in the face of local-level initiative (Turnaround) in an NHS hospital and compare to Bach and Kessler’s (2012) model of public service employment relations. Design/methodology/approach Case study research consisting of 23 in-depth semi-structured interviews from a range of participants. Findings The principles behind IWL were almost entirely sacrificed in order to meet the financial objectives of Turnaround. This indicates the primacy of localised upstream performance management initiatives over the national-level downstream employee relations initiatives that form the basis of the NHS’ claim to model employer aspiration. Research limitations/implications The case study was conducted between 2007 and 2009. While the case study falls under previous government regime, the dualised system of national-level agreements combined with localised performance management – and the continued existence of both Turnaround and IWL – makes the results relevant at the time of writing. Originality/value Some studies (e.g. Skinner et al., 2004) indicated a perception that IWL was not trusted by NHS staff. The present study offers reasons as to why this may be the case.

Background The adaptation of interventions for new contexts is a rapidly developing research area. To date there is no consensus-based guidance to support decision-making and recommend adaptation processes. The ADAPT study is developing such guidance. This aim of the qualitative component of the study was to explore stakeholders’ understandings of adaptation, as to date there has limited consideration of how different concepts and meanings shape decision-making and practice. Methods A case study research design was used. Participants/cases were purposefully sampled based on study outcome, study design, expertise, context and country. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of researchers (n = 23); representatives from research funding panels (n = 6); journal editors (n = 5) and practitioners (n = 3). Data were analysed using the Framework approach. Overarching themes were discussed with the ADAPT study team, with further iterative refinement of subthemes. Results The results generated four central themes. Four themes related to stakeholders’ understanding: 1) definitions of adaptation and related concepts; 2) rationales for undertaking adaptation; 3) the appropriate timing for adaptation; and 4) ensuring fidelity when implementing adapted interventions. Conclusion The findings highlight the lack of clarity around key concepts and uncertainty about central decision-making processes, notably why interventions should be adapted, when and to what extent. This has informed the ADAPT study’s guidance, shaping the scope and nature of recommendations to be included and surfacing key uncertainties that require future consideration.
