Abstract This paper presents the results of a comparative assessment of Andhra Pradesh Community Natural Farming (APCNF) and conventional management systems across six cropping systems in Andhra Pradesh, India. The six crops investigated, i.e. paddy rice, groundnut, maize, chillies, cotton and Bengal gram, account for more than 80% of crop area in the state. Greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprint) were assessed using methods consistent with Life Cycle Analysis. Given the potential for APCNF to affect multiple ecological, economic and social aspects of farming, the study also briefly comments on preliminary results for yields, costs, gender-differentiated labor, ecosystem impact, and human toxicity by synthesizing the available literature and reporting preliminary results from data collection. The results suggest that APCNF emissions are likely to be significantly lower than those of conventional systems. APCNF would reduce emissions by a minimum of 23% in comparison to conventional practices at the field level. A transition to APCNF could save on average of 5.1 million tonnes CO2eq year-1, which is approximately equal to mitigating 30% of emissions from this cropland. Massive potential for emission reductions remain untapped in terms of residue management, paddy rice water management, livestock, and agroforestry. Trends in preliminary data on other social and environmental outcomes support previous studies, and would seem to indicate that APCNF may generate substantial benefits for the people and landscapes of Andhra Pradesh.

A pilot trial was established to support visiting psychiatric services and local public and private practitioners through the use of videoconferencing. The purpose of the trial was to determine whether people in the community received better health-care with telemedicine. A community-based approach was used to evaluate health outcomes, costs, utilization, accessibility, quality and needs for such services in a rural community in Queensland. Over a two-year period data were collected from 124 subjects who met the criteria of having a mental health problem or mental disorder. Nine further subjects refused to participate in the study. Only 32 subjects used videoconferencing to receive mental health services. Preliminary results did not show any significant improvements in wellbeing or quality of life, although the time span was relatively short. However, the results confirmed that the people were no worse off from a consumer or a practitioner perspective from using videoconferencing. Most consumers found that videoconferencing with a psychiatrist moderately or greatly helped them in managing their treatment, with 98% of them preferring to be offered videoconferencing in combination with local services. Overall, videoconferencing is a crucial part of enhancing psychiatry services in rural areas. However, it is not necessarily cost-effective for all consumers, general practitioners, psychiatrists, or the public mental health service.

<p>In irrigated agricultural areas, where the availability of water for irrigation does not rely on any water storage, water management requires special attention, in particular under large annual and inter-annual variability in the hydrological regime and the uncertainty of climate change. The inherent increased vulnerability of the agro-ecosystem, makes the monitoring of crop conditions and water requirements a valuable tool for improving water use efficiency and, therefore, crop yields.</p><p>This presentation focus on one such agricultural area, located in the Lis Valley (Centre of Portugal), which is a rather vulnerable area also facing drainage and salinity problems. The study aims at contributing to better characterizing the temporal and spatial distribution of rice water requirements during the growing season. Irrigation water sources are the Lis River and its tributaries, which discharges depend directly from precipitation. The most important problems of water distribution in the Lis Valley irrigation district are water shortage and poor water quality in the dry summer period, aggravated by limitations of the irrigation and drainage systems that date back to the end of the 1950’s.</p><p>We report preliminary results on using remote sensing data to better understand rice cropping local conditions, obtained within project GO Lis (PDR2020-101-030913) and project MEDWATERICE (PRIMA/0006/2018). Rice irrigation is traditionally conducted applying continuous flooding, which requires much more irrigation water than non-ponded crops, and therefore needs special attention. In particular, data obtained from satellite Sentinel-2A land surface imagery are compared with data obtained using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Data for rice cultivated areas during the 2020 cultivation season, together with weather and crop parameters, are used to calculate biophysical indicators and indices of water stress in the vegetation. Actual crop evapotranspiration was appraised with remote sensing based estimates of the crop coefficient (Kc) and used to assess rice water requirements. Procedures and methodologies to estimate Kc were tested, namely those based on vegetation indices such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Results are discussed bearing in mind the usefulness of the diverse tools, based on different resolution data (Sentinel-2A and UAV), for improving the understanding of the impacts of irrigation practices on crop yield and main challenges of rice production and water management in the Lis Valley irrigation district.</p>

The global ERP industry blossomed in the 1990’s automating back office operations. The Australian ERP industry matched this global trend and has kept pace with the latest amalgam of front office applications including CRM, demand planning and sales-force automation being merged with the traditional ERP applications. ERP vendors are frantic in their attempts to ride the “E” wave whilst ERP customers struggle with the people, process and technology implications that ERP brings. This paper presents the preliminary results of an analysis of the Australian ERP market place. This study looks at the market movement and demographics of SAP, the dominant ERP vendor within the Australian marketplace.

In order to ensure self-sufficiency, the current pulses requirement in the country is estimated at 22.5 MT. Keeping in view the trends in population growth rate and that several other options besides pulses are now available for meeting protein requirements of the people due to change in food habits of masses, the pulse requirement in the country is projected at 32 MT by the year 2030 and 39 million tonnes by the year 2050. This necessitates an annual growth rate of 2.2% requiring a phenomenal shift in research, technology generation, its dissemination, and commercialization along with capacity building in frontier areas of research. In every five year interval productivity will have to be enhanced by an average of about 80 kg/ha over the previous one to achieve a final productivity rate of 950 kg/ha by the end of 2025 and 1335 kg/ha by the end of 2050. The above-stated projections have been made assuming that practically it will be feasible to increase about 4 million ha additional area under pulses. The current per capita availability is estimated at 41.6 g/capita/day which was quite low (31.8 g) in 2000. Cultivation of pulses on poor soils under rainfed conditions with minimum inputs and care subject these crops to severe yield losses not only due to edaphic, abiotic and socio-economic factors but also due to confounding effects of various biotic stresses. High influence of environmental factors and their interactions with genotype are the major production constraint in pulses which lead to a limited gain in terms of productivity in most of the pulses. Therefore, for increasing of production of pulses, intercropping systems found to more beneficial in comparison to sole cropping systems in respect to profitability and soil fertility.
