Statistical learning is an active process wherein information is actively selected from the learning environment. As current information is integrated with existing knowledge, it shapes attention in subsequent learning, placing biases on which new information will be sampled. One statistical learning task that has been studied recently is cross-situational word learning (CSL). In CSL, statistical learners are able to learn the correct mappings between novel visual objects and spoken labels after watching sequences where the two are paired together in referentially ambiguous contexts. In the present paper, we use a computational method called Tensor Component Analysis (TCA) to analyze real-time gaze data collected from a set of CSL studies. We applied TCA to learners' gaze data in order to derive latent variables related to real-time statistical learning and to examine how selective attention is organized in time. Our method allows us to address two specific questions: a) the similarity in attention behavior across strong vs. weak learners as well as across learned vs. not-learned items and b) how the structure of attention relates to word learning. We measured learners' knowledge of label-object pairs at the end of a training session, and show that their real-time gaze data can be used to predict item-level learning outcomes as well as decode pretrained item knowledge.

Learning is often accompanied by a subjective sense of confidence in one's knowledge, a feeling of knowing what you know and how well you know it. Subjective confidence has been shown to guide learning in other domains, but has received little attention so far in the word learning literature. Across three word learning experiments, we investigated whether and how a sense of confidence in having acquired a word meaning influences the word learning process itself. First, we show evidence for a confirmation bias during word learning in a cross-situational statistical learning task: Learners who are highly confident they know the meaning of a word are more likely to persist in their belief than learners who are not, even after observing objective evidence disconfirming their belief. Second, we show that subjective confidence in a word-meaning modulates inferential processes based on that word, affecting learning over the whole lexicon: Learners who hold high confidence in a word-meaning are more likely to use that word to make mutual exclusivity inferences about the meaning of other words. We conclude that confidence influences word learning by modulating both information selection processes and inferential processes and discuss the implications of these results for word learning models.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Introduction Despite the established benefits of cardiac rehabilitation (CR), it remains significantly underutilized. Home-based CR (CR-HB) programs should offer the same core CR components as Centre-based programs (CR-CB) but several aspects need to be adapted, communication and supervision must be improved. Although CR-HB has been successfully deployed and is a valuable alternative to CR-CB, there is less structured experience with these non-uniform programs and further studies are needed to understand which patients (pts) are indicated to this type of program. Purpose To investigate pt-perceived facilitators and barriers to home-based rehabilitation exercise. Methods Prospective cohort study which included pts who were participating in a CR-CB program and accepted to participate in a CR-HB program after CR-CB closure due to COVID-19. The CR-HB consisted in a multidisciplinary digital CR program, including pt risk evaluation and regular assessment, exercise, educational and psychological sessions. The online exercise training sessions consisted of recorded videos and real time online supervised exercise training group sessions. It was recommended to do each session 3 times per week, during 60 min. A pictorial exercise training guidebook was available to all participants including instructions regarding safety, clothing and warm-up, and a detailed illustrated description of each  exercise sessions. Also, for questions or difficulties regarding the exercises, an e-mail and telephone was provided. Once a month, real time CR exercise sessions was provided with a duration of 60min. Results 116 cardiovascular disease pts (62.6 ± 8.9years, 95 males) who were attending a face-to-face CR program were included in a CR-HB program. The majority of the pts had coronary artery disease (89%) and 5% valvular disease. Regarding risk factors, obesity was the most common (75%) followed by hypertension (60%), family history (42%), dyslipidaemia (38%), diabetes (18%), and smoking (13%). Almost half (47%) of the participants did at least one online exercise training session per week: 58% did 2-3 times per week, 27% once per week and 15% more than 4 times per week. Participants who did less than one exercise session per week reported as cause: lack of motivation (38%), preference of a different mode of exercise training such as exercise in the exterior space (26%), technology barrier such as impossibility to stream online videos (11%), fear of performing exercise without supervision (4%), and limited space at home (4%). Conclusions Our study based on real-life results of a CR-HB program shows a sub-optimal rate of participation in exercise sessions due to different causes, but mainly for the lack of motivation to exercise alone or preference for walking in exterior space. The knowledge of the CR-HB program barriers will facilitate to find out strategies to increase the participation rate and to select the best candidates for this type of programs.

The present study explores morphological bootstrapping in cross-situational word learning. Adult, English-speaking participants were exposed to novel words from an artificial language from three different semantic categories: fruit, animals, and vehicles. In the Experimental conditions, the final CV syllable was consistent across categories (e.g., /-ke/ for fruits), while in the Control condition, the endings were the same, but were assigned to words randomly. After initial training on the morphology under various degrees of referential uncertainty, participants were given a cross-situational word learning task with high referential uncertainty. With poor statistical cues to learn the words across trials, participants were forced to rely on the morphological cues to word meaning. In Experiments 1-3, participants in the Experimental conditions repeatedly outperformed participants in the Control conditions. In Experiment 4, when referential uncertainty was high in both parts of the experiment, there was no evidence of learning or making use of the morphological cues. These results suggest that learners apply morphological cues to word meaning only once they are reliably available.

A method of combining spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis for obtaining quantitative information on how a reaction proceeds is presented. The method is an approach for the explorative synthetic organic laboratory rather than the analytical chemistry laboratory. The method implements near-infrared spectroscopy with an optical fiber transreflectance probe as instrumentation. The data analysis consists of decomposition of the spectral data, which are recorded during the course of a reaction by using principal component analysis to obtain latent variables, scores, and loading. From the scores and the corresponding reaction time, it is possible to obtain a reaction profile. This reaction profile can easily be recalculated to obtain the concentration profile over time. This calculation is based on only two quantitative measurements, which can be (1) measurement from the work-up of the reaction or (2) chromatographic analysis from two withdrawn samples during the reaction. The method is applied to the synthesis of 3-amino-propan-1,2-diol.
