Prepublication manuscript.In the present investigation we consider and explain an apparent paradox in the measurement of corporal punishment with the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS-PC): How can it have poor internal consistency and still be reliable? The CTS-PC was administered to a community sample of 453 opposite sex couples who were parents of 3- to 7-year-old children. Internal consistency was marginal, yet item response theory analyses revealed that reliability rose sharply with increasing corporal punishment, exceeding .80 in the upper ranges of the construct. The results suggest that the CTS-PC Corporal Punishment subscale reliably discriminates among parents who report average to high corporal punishment (64% of mothers and 56% of fathers in the present sample), despite low overall internal consistency. These results have straightforward implications for the use and reporting of the scale.

Although there are psychometric evaluations of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) when applied to heterosexual relationships, none has used item response theory (IRT). To address this gap, the present paper assesses the instrument's physical violence subscale. The CTS2 was applied to 764 women who also responded for their partners. Single dimensionality assumption was corroborated. A 2-parameter logistic IRT model was used for estimating location and discriminating power of each item. Differential item functioning and item information pattern along the violence continuum were assessed. Gender differences were detected in 3 out of 12 items. Item coverage of the latent trait spectrum indicated little information at the lower ends, while plenty in the middle and upper ranges. Still, depending on gender, some item overlaps and regions with gaps could be detected. Despite some unresolved problems, the analysis shows that the items form a theoretically coherent information set across the continuum. Provided the user is aware of possible drawbacks, using the physical violence subscale of the CTS2 in heterosexual couples is still a sensible option.

Abstract Background: The Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) is a measure of subjective well-being and assesses eudemonic and hedonic aspects of well-being. However, differential scoring of the WEMWBS across gender and its precision of measurement has not been examined. The present study assesses the psychometric properties of the WEMWBS using Measurement Invariance (MI) between males and females and Item Response Theory (IRT) analyses. Method: A community sample of 386 adults from the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada were assessed online (N = 394, 54.8% men, 43.1% women, Mage = 27.48, SD = 5.57). Results: MI analyses observed invariance across males and females at the configural level and metric level but non-invariance at the scalar level. The graded response model conducted to observe item properties indicated that all items demonstrated, although variable, sufficient discrimination capacity.Conclusions: Gender comparisons based on WEMWBS scores should be cautiously interpreted for specific items that demonstrate different scalar scales and similar scores indicate different severity. The items showed increased reliability for latent levels of ∓ 2 SD from the mean level of SWB. The WEMWBS may also not perform well for clinically low and high levels of SWB. Including assessments for clinical cases may optimise the use of the WEMWBS.

Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has been recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) as a tentative disorder in the latest (fifth) revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). However, psychometric evaluation of the nine IGD criteria remains necessary to further enhance its assessment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF). The internal structure, internal consistency, temporal stability, and relationships with other variables were assessed. Furthermore, a polytomous item response theory (IRT) approach was used to evaluate the performance of each item and the test as a whole. A sample of 388 online gamers (53.61% women, mean age 25.45 years, standard deviation (SD) = 9.62) was recruited for this study. Similar to previous research, the results supported a one-factor structure for the IGDS9-SF, adequate internal consistency and temporal stability of scores, goodness of fit of the items to the graded response model (GRM), and more precise scores at high trait levels to assess IGD in Spanish populations. These findings corroborate the suitability of the Spanish IGDS9-SF for clinical assessment and research within Spanish-speaking populations.

Background: Symptom assessment is a critical component of concussion diagnosis and management, with item selection primarily driven by clinical judgment or expert consensus. We recently demonstrated that concussion symptoms assessed by the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) are essentially unidimensional, implying that overall symptom severity may be accurately estimated with relatively few questions. Briefer, evidence-based forms for symptom assessment would provide clinicians flexibility. Purpose: To develop and validate an abbreviated assessment of general concussion symptom severity using item response theory analyses. Study Design: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2. Methods: Broad clinical assessments (SCAT3, Immediate Post-concussion and Cognitive Testing, Balance Error Scoring System, and Brief Symptom Inventory–18 Global Severity Index) were completed by 265 injured athletes and 235 matched teammate controls at 24 to 48 hours and 8, 15, and 45 days after concussion. Symptom checklist short forms (3-14 items from the original 22) were selected using item response theory item information curves. Internal consistency reliability (Cronbach alpha), correlation with criterion measures assessed concurrently (ie, acute neurocognitive performance, balance, and emotional symptoms), predictive validity (correlations with symptom duration), and differences between concussed and control groups (Cohen d) were examined across forms. Sensitivity and false-positive rates of the forms were estimated and compared using reliable change indices derived from controls. Results: Across the 3- to 22-item forms, internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach alphas, 0.90-0.94). Clinical correlations were significant ( P≤ .017) and to similar degrees for all short forms. Group difference confidence intervals overlapped across forms at 24- to 48-hour (Cohen d, 1.27-1.51) and 8-day follow-up (Cohen d, 0.31-0.44). Sensitivity remained similar across short forms, with a low false-positive rate in controls. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that even an ultrashort (3-item) inventory provides sufficiently reliable and valid estimates of overall concussion symptom severity 24 to 48 hours after injury. Future revisions of the SCAT could eliminate inefficient items, although replication in larger samples and extension to other postinjury time points are warranted.
