 Background and Objectives: The aim of the paper was designed to know the relationship between complementary feeding, nutritional knowledge and behavior of mothers (IYCF practices) and nutritional status of children less than two years of age at Ambhanjyang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Makwanpur district.Material and Methods: The study was conducted in aforesaid VDC of Makwanpur districts with a total of 120 samples. The questionnaire used consisted of socio-demographic information, health profile, dietary behavior of the child such as amount of feeding, frequency of feeding, diversified food and attitude statements of mothers regarding nutritional knowledge. The nutritional status of the child was assessed on the basis of anthropometric measurements weight and height.Results: In this survey, 21.2 percent of the children were found to be moderately underweight while 5.8 percent of the children were severely underweight, 19.2 percent were moderately stunted while 15 percent were found severely stunted. Likewise, 10.8 percent of the children found moderately wasted and only 1 child was found to be severely wasted. No significant association was observed between various socio-economic factors, complementary feeding practices and nutritional status of a child.Conclusion: The prevalence of under nutrition, stunting and inadequate complementary feeding practices was observed in the study sample. Although no significant association was observed between various socio-demographic factors and nutritional status of a child, there is an immediate requirement of healthy knowledge and change in behavior of mothers of children about complementary feeding practices to prevent the deteriorating nutritional status of child.  Janaki Medical College Journal of Medical Sciences (2017) Vol. 5(1): 22-32

Background: In Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), including Kenya, undernutrition has been the most significant contributor to child morbidity and mortality. Knowledge and practices of mothers/caregivers have been identified as a key sustainable factor for consideration in determining the nutritional status of children. The study aim was to determine how caregiver knowledge and socio-economic status will impact on nutritional status of children under 5 years. Methods: This study was conducted in Kwale County, Kenya, to assess baseline maternal and child parameters. Seven hundred pairs; children and their primary caregivers were sampled at baseline. Results: A total of 681 households comprised of caregiver and index child pair participated in the survey from the sampled 700. Knowledge scores of food functions, breastfeeding and complementary feeding were combined to assess caregivers’ nutritional knowledge with a maximum score of 24. The median score was 11 (IQR: 9-12) and ranged from 0 to 24. Those with scores of 12 and above (50% plus) were 230 (33.2%). Stunting was 29.8% and the level of under-weight was 16.4%. No significant association was found between nutritional knowledge of the caregivers and nutritional indicators of children under 5 years, but there were significant differences (P= 0.002) in the Knowledge score of caregivers between the five wealth quintiles. Conclusion: Most of the caregivers did not have any nutritional knowledge which was assessed as knowledge of food groups and sources and functions of different foods as well as knowledge in breastfeeding and complementary feeding.

Introduction Childhood undernutrition is a major public health problem especially in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). The prevalence of early introduction of complementary feeding, low meal frequency, and low dietary diversity are frequent in LMICs. The effect of inappropriate complementary feeding practices on the nutritional status of children is not well documented in East African countries including Tanzania. Therefore, this study aimed at determining the effect of inappropriate complementary feeding practices on the nutritional status of children aged 6–24 months in urban Moshi, Tanzania. Methodology A retrospective cohort study was done using the Pasua and Majengo cohorts of mother-child pairs in urban Moshi who were enrolled from 2002 to 2017. About 3355 mother-child pairs were included in the analysis. Appropriate complementary feeding practices were assessed using WHO IYFP indicators such as age at introduction of solid, semi-solid, or soft foods, minimum dietary diversity, and minimum meal frequency. Nutritional status (stunting, wasting, and underweight) was determined. Multilevel modeling was applied to obtain the effect of inappropriate complementary feeding practices on the nutritional status of children and to account for the clustering effect of mothers and children and the correlation of repeated measures within each child. Results Majority of the children (91.2%) were given soft/semi-solid/solid foods before six months of age, 40.3percent had low meal frequency, and 74percent had low dietary diversity. Early introduction of complementary food at age 0–1 month was statistically significantly associated with higher risks of wasting and underweight (ARR 2.9, 95%CI 1.3–6.3; and ARR 2.6, 95% CI 1.3–5.1 respectively). Children with low minimum meal frequency had higher risks of stunting, wasting, and underweight (ARR 2.9, 95%CI 2.3–3.6; ARR 1.9, 95%CI 1.5–2.5 and ARR 1.9, 95%CI 1.5–2.4 respectively). Children with low minimum dietary diversity were more likely to be stunted than is the case with their peers who received the minimum dietary diversity (ARR 1.3, 95% CI 1.01–1.6). Conclusion There were a high proportion of children, which were fed inappropriately; Inappropriate complementary feeding practices predisposed children to undernutrition. Our study supports the introduction of complementary feeding, providing minimum dietary diversity, and minimum feeding frequency at six months of age as important in improving the nutritional status of the children.

The study was under taken to assess nutritional status of children and identify the associated factors. Nutritionalstatus of children age 12-59 month was assessed using anthropometric measurement namely weight, height and mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) using standard procedure. To identify the factor, semi structural questionnaire was used for the mothers. Sixty percent of children had normal nutritional status and 40% followed by some malnutrition status by Gomez classification. No of ANC visit (odd ratio = 7.54 and 95% CI was 1.37 - 41.41), practice during the pregnancy period (P value < 0.021), and feeding practice of extra milk to the children (P value < 0.037) was significantly associated factors. Abstract. Prevalence of malnutrition among under five years old children still high. Results of nutrition problem analyzed among under five years old children at RT 01, 02, and 03 RW 08 Srondol, Semarang City showed that overweight and stunting proportions among under five years old children were still high. This community nutrition  program had objective to optimized Integrated service post (POSYANDU) function to monitor growth and development of under-five years old children (D/S ) with contribution of stakeholder, increasing maternal knowledge about complementary feeding and feeding practice for children, increasing feeding practice for under-five children, and increasing nutritional status (W/H) of under-five years old children. These community service programs were being held in December 2018 with community relation methods. This program involved stakeholders, POSYANDU cadre, and mother of overweight and stunting children at RW 08 Srondol Kulon, Banyumanik District, Semarang City. The result of “SANATA: sayang anak balita” includes : 1) there was the participation of local government for programs, increasing of POSYANDU participation (D/S) from 32,5% - 37,1%. There was an increased in mother knowledge and feeding practice. Nutritional intake of under five years old children increased and get 80-110% sufficiency for macronutrient. None children had decreased on W/H nutritional status and increasing of nutritional status (W/H) occur on 5 from 10 stunting children. We hoped that there was a sustainability of the program with knowledge updating for mothers. Reward from RW/posyandu for mother with normal nutritional status of children, haved good nutritional knowledge, and had the capability to child feeding practice would give support from them to optimized nutritional status.Keywords: nutritional status, overweight, stunting, improving nutritionAbstrak. Prevalensi masalah gizi buruk, gizi kurang, stunting, dan gizi lebih pada balita masih cukup tinggi. Hasil analisis masalah gizi pada balita di RT 01, 02, dan 03 RW 08 Srondol, Kota Semarang yaitu masih tingginya proporsi status gizi lebih dan status gizi pendek (stunting) pada balita. Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengoptimalkan fungsi posyandu dalam pemantauan tumbuh kembang anak (cakupan D/S) dengan melibatkan stakeholder terkait, meningkatkan pengetahuan ibu tentang MP-ASI dan pemberian makan pada balita, meningkatkan pola asuh ibu balita dalam pemberian makan balita sesuai kebutuhan, dan meningkatkan status gizi BB/TB pada balita. Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Desember Tahun 2018 dengan metode community relation. Program melibatkan tokoh masyarakat, kader posyandu, dan ibu balita berstatus gizi lebih dan gizi pendek di wilayah RT 01, 02 dan 03 RW 08 Kelurahan Srondol Kulon Kecamatan Banyumanik, Kota Semarang. Hasil dari program SANATA: sayang anak balita ini adalah adanya partisipasi tokoh masyarakat dalam program, meningkatnya angka partisipasi posyandu (cakupan D/S) di Posyandu Mawar RW 08 yaitu dari 32,5 % menjadi 37,1 %. Terdapat peningkatan pengetahuan ibu tentang MP-ASI dan pemberian makan pada balita. Asupan zat gizi pada balita yang dilihat dari perubahan pola makan balita dapat mencapai kecukupan 80-110% zat gizi makro. Tidak terjadi penurunan status gizi BB/TB (pada 10 balita) dan terjadi peningkatan status gizi BB/TB pada 5 dari 10 balita stunting. Diharapkan adanya upaya menjaga keberlanjutan program dengan pengkayaan materi (update pengetahuan) pada ibu balita secara berkala. Penghargaan/reward/apresiasi dari pihak RW/posyandu bagi ibu yang memiliki balita berstatus gizi baik, memiliki pengetahuan gizi yang baik, serta mampu melaksanakan pola pengasuhan dan pemberian makan yang baik bagi balita akan lebih menyemangati para ibu balita dalam mengoptimalkan gizi balitanya.Kata Kunci: gizi balita, gizi lebih, stunting, perbaikan gizi
