Background Stature is the height of the person in the upright posture. It is an important measure of physical identity. Interrelationships among different body measurements may be used to estimate one from another in case of missing body parts. Objective Stature is an important indicator for identification. There are numerous means to establish stature and their significance lies in the simplicity of measurement, applicability and accuracy in prediction. The current study dealt with developing a regression equation for stature estimation from foot length and to find out the correlation between body height and foot length of Nepalese people. Methods The present study was carried out to establish the regression equation and correlation coefficient between individual’s height and mean foot length. It was conducted on 440 students of age group 17 to 25 years studying in Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Dhulikhel, Nepal. Body height and foot length were measured in centimeter. Results There was significant correlation between height and foot length (r = 0. 703, p < 0.01).The regression equation for height and foot length was found to be Y = 3.179 X + 87.65, where X is the foot length and Y the height. Conclusions This study will help in medico-legal cases in establishing identity of an individual and this would be useful for Anatomists and Anthropologists to calculate stature of adult Nepalese based on foot length. Measurement of body size such as height and weight are required for assessment of growth and nutritional status of person, determination of basic energy requirements, standardization of measures for physical capacity, for adjusting drug dosage and for identifying an unknown cadaver. However, in some situations it is not possible to measure the stature of a person because of deformities of the limbs, in person who have undergone amputations or in unknown cadavers where lower limb (s) and / or trunk is mutated / absent. In such cases, stature has to be estimated using other body parameters. These estimations are also of prime importance in predicting the age-related loss in stature, identifying individuals with disproportionate growth abnormalities, skeletal dysplasia, medico-legal cases or height loss during surgical procedures on the spine. These measurements also have found application in normalizing pulmonary function in scoliosis. Hence based on these findings the present study was planned for evaluation of the stature height in the Maharashtra population by using arm span using regression equation. The present study was planned in Department of Forensic Medicine, Dr. Panjabrao Alias Bhausaheb Deshmukh Memorial Medical College, Shivaji Nagar, Amravati. The total 50 cases of the age group from 20 - 45 years were enrolled in the present study. This age group was chosen because the growth of an individual ceases by this age and there is no age related loss in body height at this age. Arm span measurement can serve as one of the most reliable body parameter to determine stature of an individual. It is useful in determining related loss in stature and in identifying individuals with disproportionate growth abnormalities. The data generated from the present study concludes that arm-span and hand length can be used in estimation of the height of both males and females. The regression equations so derived can be used in cadavers or an amputee with fairly accurate results. This can be helpful in medico- legal cases as well as in study of anthropology. Background: There are various circumstances where measurements are not actually possible, replacement parameters can be used to estimate body height. Many characteristics of body height measurement and how to measure it. These include anthropometric measurements that can be used for the identification of medicolegal-forensic processes. Body height in clinical medicine and in the field of scientific research can be easily estimated using various anthropometric parameters such as arm span, knee height, foot length and foot breadth, and others. The arm span and foot length has proved to be one of the most reliable predictors. This study was conducted to estimate of body height from arm span and foot length using the regression equation and to determine the correlation between the body height and arm span and foot length.Methods: This study was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya with 182 Javanese female students. Stature, arm span and foot length measured directly using anthropometric technique and measuring tape. The data obtained were then analyzed with SPSS version 16. The regression equation was derived for the estimate of body height and the relationship between stature, arm span and foot length determined by the Pearson correlation.               Results: We found that the mean body height of Javanese women was 1534,45 ± 47,623  mm, mean of arm span 1543,25 ± 60,468 mm and the mean of foot length 226,14 ± 9,586 mm. The correlation between stature and arm span was positive and significant (r = 0,715  , p <0,05). The correlation between stature and foot length was positive and significant (r = 0,726 , p <0,05). The correlation between stature and arm span and foot length was positive and significant (r = 0,798, p <0,05).               Conclusion: Body height correlates well with the arm span and foot length so that it can be used as a reliable marker for high estimates using regression equations.

Introduction: Body height is an important measure of physical identity. Height exhibits a dimensional relationship with various parts of the body. This relationship helps to calculate height from dismembered and mutilated body parts in forensic examinations. As the cranial dimensions are more reliable and precise means of predicting the stature, this study was undertaken to find the relation between head length and height and to derive a regression formula for the estimation of height from head length among dental students. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 dental students of age group 18-21 years in the Department of Anatomy, Kantipur Dental College Teaching Hospital and Research Center, Basundhara, Kathmandu. The head length was measured with the help of spreading caliper. Height was measured with the help of a standard height measuring instrument. The head length and the height of the students were measured in centimeters. Data obtained were analyzed to find the correlation between head length and height and to derive a regression equation for the estimation of height. Results: A significant positive correlation was observed between head length and height (r=0.734, P<0.001). The regression equation for body height and head length including both sexes and all age groups of dental students was found to be y=12.9+8.45x where x is head length and y is body height. Conclusions: It was observed in the present study that there was a significant positive correlation between height and head length in all the age groups indicating that head length is a reliable indicator in estimation of height.

Background Estimation of body height from its segments or dismember parts has important considerations for identifications of living or dead human body or remains recovered from mass disaster or other similar conditions. Objective Stature is an important consideration in determining the identity. Our aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between foot length and body height and to derive a regression equation for stature estimation from foot length and to find out the correlation between body height and foot length. Methods The present study was conducted on 200 medical students of age group 18 to 23 years studying in MGM Medical College, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. India. Body height and foot length were measured in centimeter. All the measurements were taken by using standard measuring devices and standard anthropometric techniques. Results Correlation coefficients between stature and foot dimensions were found to be positive and statistically highly significant. Prediction of stature was found to be most accurate by multiple regression analysis. Conclusions In population similar to our subjects, stature and gender estimation can be done by using foot measurements and it will be helpful for Anatomists, Anthropologists and forensic experts to calculate stature based on foot length. Background Establishing personal identity is one of the main concerns in forensic investigations. In forensic anthropology, estimation of height from head circumference has a significant role in establishing personal identity.Objective The objective of the present study was an attempt to understand the relationship between height and head circumference of an individual and to derive regression formulae to estimate the height from the head circumference.Method The present study consisted of 440 (258 male and 182 female) students of age group 17 to 25 years studying in Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Dhulikhel, Nepal during the period from November 2012 to October 2013. Height and head circumference of an individual were measured in centimeter. Data were analyzed by using statistical software SPSS-16Result The findings of the present study were significant correlation between height and head circumference (r = 0.443, p < 0.01 for male, r = 0.302, p<0.01 for female, and r = 0. 398, p < 0.01 for combined (male and female). The regression equation for height and head circumference was found to be Y = 1.734X + 70.36 (R2 = 0.196) for male, Y = 0.916X + 106.8 (R2 = 0.091) for female, and Y = 1.648 X + 71.69 (R2 = 0.158) for combined (male and female), where Y is the height of Individual and X is the Head Circumference.Conclusion Head circumference showed highly significant positive correlation with individual’s height. Therefore, the present study will help in medico-legal cases in establishing the identity of an individual and this would also be useful for Anatomists and Anthropologists.Kathmandu University Medical Journal Vol.12(2) 2014: 89-92

This study was preformed to evaluate the biometric traits of 227 Yankasa sheep in northern Nigeria under a multivariate approach. The body measurements taken were: withers height, rump height, body length, heart girth, tail length, face length, shoulder width, head width, rump width, ear length, foreleg length, hind leg length and rump length. The animals were divided into two age groups: <15.5 and 15.5 - 28.3 months old, respectively. General linear model was used to study age group effect while principal component factor analysis was performed to define body shape upon the correlation matrix of the thirteen body measurements. Age group significantly (P<0.05) affected the morphological characters except ear length. Pearson?s coefficients of correlation were positive and significant in both age groups. In <15.5 months old sheep, four principal components (factors) were extracted (ratio of variance = 89.27). The first factor accounted for 73.03% of the total variance and was interpreted as a measure of general size. The second factor which explained 7.61% of the generalized variance tended to describe flesh dimensions (shoulder width and rump width), while the third factor had its loadings for tail length and ear length. The fourth factor was influenced by head width. In 15.5-28.3 months old sheep, three factors (ratio of variance=75.21) were identified. These seven extracted factors could be considered in breeding programmes to improve body conformation of sheep since variation in meat traits was not associated with body height.

Body height estimation is one of important parameters used for establishing the individuality in cases of mutilated bodies or found body parts. It is not rare that in the cases of mutilation the police authority would only give the body parts or remaining skeletons of the victims. The aims of the study were to find body height estimation formula based on percutaneous of foot length and foot breadth in Javanese females at Surabaya Muhammadiyah University. The type of research design was cross-sectional observational study. Samples were Javanese females student at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya , which was selected as the sample unit . The samples are in this study was Two-hundred and twenty-two people.The variabel independent of this research are foot length and foot breath, the variabel dependent is body height. Data were analyzed using normality test with Kolmogorov Smirnoff (a>0,05), Pearson correlation test (a<0,05) and linear regression test (a <0,05) to get body height estimation formula. The results of this study is, 1) A significant correlation between foot length and body height (r = 0,731), 2) A significant correlation between foot breadth and body height (r-0,323), 3) A significant correlation between foot length, foot breadth and body height (r=0,732), 4) The body height estimation formula based on foot length is 688,435 +3,745*foot length, 5) The body height estimation formula based on foot breadth is = 1273,002 + 2,942*foot breadth, and 6) The body height estimation formula based on foot length and foot breadth is 695,227 + 3,805*foot length – 0,229*foot breadth. As a conclusion of this study is the obtained estimation formula of body height based on foot length and foot breadth of Javanese females is 695,227 + 3,805*foot length – 0,229*foot breadth.

Allometric growth in larvae and juvenile blackhead seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii (Bleeker, 1854) was studied. In the larval head, snout length, snout-gill slit distance, interocular distance and mouth width showed positive allometric growth, while eye diameter and head height showed negative allometric growth. In the head of juveniles, interocular distance and mouth width showed negative allometric growth, while all other organs showed positive allometric growth. In larval body, body thickness showed positive allometric growth, while all other body parts showed negative allometric growth. In the juvenile body, caudal peduncle length, caudal peduncle height and body thickness showed positive allometric growth, while head length, body height, trunk length and tail length showed negative allometric growth. All of the larval swimming structures (the dorsal fins, pectoral fins, pelvic fins, anal fins and caudal fins) showed positive allometric growth. The rapid development of key organs in the blackhead seabream after the initiation of exogenous nutrition allows for a significant increase in viability with minimal metabolic loss. The information generated through this study can provide a framework for understanding how blackhead seabream responds developmentally to challenging external pressures during their early life.
