Introduction: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a common salivary gland malignancy. As studies reported on large cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid glands are few, this paper aims to research the effects of clinical and pathological factors, such as applying concentrated growth factor (CGF) on repairing and cervical lymph node metastasis, on the prognosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland. Methods: The retrospective analysis of prognostic factors was conducted based on 176 cases with mucoepidermoidcarcinoma of the parotid gland, who received treatment at the Affiliated Hospital of  Chengde Medical College during the period of March 2000 to March 2012. Results: The Five-year overall survival rate was 75.57%, while the Five-year tumor-free survival rate was 64.77%. Univariate analysis showed that the influential factors for the prognosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland included surgical approach, tumor size, clinical stage, pathological grade, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis, etc; among which pathological grade, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis were indicated by multivariate analysis to be the independent risk factors. Conclusion: The survival rate of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland is relatively high. Lymph node metastasis, pathological grade, and distant metastasis are the independent risk factors that affect the prognosis of patients with mucous epidermis carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Abstract Objectives: The present study investigated the correlation between α B-crystallin (CRYAB, HSPB5) and p53 expression in ovarian cancer and further analyzed the relationship between their expression and clinicopathology and the prognostic value of their co-expression in ovarian cancer. Methods: CRYAB and p53 expression was assessed using immunohistochemistry on ovarian cancer tumor tissues from 103 cases and validated in an independent group of 103 ovarian cancer patients. Results: High CRYAB and p53 expression rates in ovarian cancer tissues were 61.17% (63/103) and 57.28% (59/103), respectively, and their expression was positively correlated (r = 0.525, P=0.000). High CRYAB expression was significantly correlated with tumor size (P=0.028), lymph node metastasis (P=0.000), distant metastasis (P=0.005), tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage (P=0.002), and survival (P=0.000), while high p53 expression was significantly correlated with tumor size (P=0.006), pathological grade (P=0.023), lymph node metastasis (P=0.001), and survival (P=0.000). Further studies found that the high CRYAB and p53 co-expression was also significantly correlated with pathological grade (P=0.024), lymph node metastasis (P=0.000), Distant metastasis (P=0.015), TNM stage (P=0.013), and survival (P=0.000). High expression of either CRYAB or p53 and high co-expression of CRYAB and p53 were significantly correlated with poor disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), respectively (P<0.05). Patients with high CRYAB and p53 co-expression had the worst prognoses among the groups. In addition, multivariate Cox regression models showed that high expression of either CRYAB or p53 and high co-expression of CRYAB and p53 were independent prognostic factors for DFS and OS (P<0.05). Moreover, the positive correlation and prognostic value of CRYAB and p53 expression were verified in another independent dataset. Conclusions: We demonstrated that patients with high CRYAB and p53 co-expression in ovarian cancer have significantly increased risks of recurrence, metastasis, and death compared with other patients. Therefore, more frequent follow-up of patients with high CRYAB and p53 co-expression is required. Our results also suggest that combination therapy with CRYAB inhibitors and p53 blockers may benefit future treatment of ovarian cancer patients with high co-expression of CRYAB and p53.

Total 60 patients were selected as per described criteria from the department of Otolaryngology and head neck surgery, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka from January 2005 to October 2006. In this study of 60 patients of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), majority of the patients are within 31-50 yrs age group with female predominance. Papillary carcinoma was more common in 31-40 yrs age group and follicular carcinoma was more common in 41-50 years. Thyroid swelling was the most common presenting symptom of DTC (91.66%), followed by cervical lymphadenopathy (33.33%). Among the 60 DTC patients, papillary carcinoma was commoner (73.33%) than follicular carcinoma (26.67%). Overall female-male ratio for these 60 patients of DTC was 1.72: 1, but in papillary type the ratio was 1.44:1. and for follicular carcinoma was 3:1. Out of 44 papillary carcinoma patients 18 patients had cervical lymph node metastasis (40.90%), and out of 16 follicular carcinoma patients 2 had cervical lymph node metastasis (12.50%); P < 0.05. Among the 44 papillary carcinoma patients only 1 had distant metastasis (2.27%), and among the 16 follicular carcinoma patients 4 had distant metastasis (25%); P <0.05. 85% of the patients were presented with unilateral and 15% were presented with bilateral lymph node metastasis. In this series, distant metastasis was found in bone and lung, Maximum lymph node metastasis was found in level II (42.10%), level III (57.89%) and level IV (42.10%). Finally the Chi-square (x2) significance test was performed according to above described findings and it was found that there is significant difference in the pattern of lymph node metastasis and of distant metastasis between papillary and follicular type of DTC (P<0.05). Objective To investigate the prognostic significance of lysyl oxidase (LOX) expression in laryngeal cancer. Study Design Retrospective chart review and histologic analysis. Setting Tertiary referral academic center. Subjects and Methods Patients (N = 100) underwent surgical treatment for laryngeal cancer and had tissue specimens available. Immunohistochemical staining for LOX was performed on laryngeal cancer tissue microarrays, and the proportion and intensity of staining were evaluated. Patients with LOX scores ≤6 were classified into the low LOX group, while those with scores >6 were classified into the high LOX group. We analyzed the correlation between LOX expression and clinical factors as well as prognosis. Results LOX was predominantly expressed in the cytoplasm and nuclei of tumor cells. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that the high LOX group had worse overall survival and recurrence-free survival rates than the low LOX group ( P < .05). LOX expression exhibited marginally significant correlation with lymph node metastasis. In the Cox regression analysis, LOX expression and lymph node metastasis were significant factors correlated with overall survival rate (odds ratio [OR] = 3.92, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.35-11.37, P = .012; OR = 1.96, 95% CI: 0.93-1.43, P = .024, respectively). LOX expression was related to distant metastasis free survival rate (OR = 7.72, 95% CI: 1.02-19.18, P = .048). Conclusion A high expression level of LOX is associated with lymph node and distant metastasis as well as poor prognosis among patients with laryngeal cancer.

Abstract Purpose The detection rate of colorectal neuroendocrine tumours (CR-NETs) is increasing, but their treatment is still controversial. Lymph node metastasis is an important reference index for the selection of treatment. The aim of our study was to investigate the factors associated with lymph node metastasis and prognosis of CR-NETs. Methods The case characteristics of patients with colorectal neuroendocrine tumours from January 2011 to December 2020 were retrospectively analysed, including age, gender, tumour size, tumour location, lymph node metastasis, pathological grade and follow-up. Results A total of 195 cases of CR-NETs were included in this study. When 15 mm was used as the cut-off value, the sensitivity, specificity and area under the curve (AUC) of lymph node metastases were 95.9%, 95.2% and 0.986, respectively. Multivariate analysis suggested that tumour size ≥ 15 mm (OR: 30.517, 95% CI: 1.250 ~ 744.996, p = 0.036) and lymphovascular invasion (OR: 42.796, 95% CI: 2.882 ~ 635.571, p = 0.006) were independent risk factors for lymph node metastasis. Age ≥ 56 (HR: 7.434, 95% CI: 1.334 ~ 41.443, p = 0.022) and distant metastasis (HR: 24.487, 95% CI: 5.357 ~ 111.940, p < 0.001) were independent prognostic factors in multivariable analyses. Conclusions When the size of a CR-NET is ≥ 15 mm, the risk of lymph node metastasis is higher, and it is recommended to choose the surgical method carefully. Tumour size and lymphovascular invasion were independent risk factors for lymph node metastasis. Age ≥ 56 and distant metastasis were independent prognostic factors.

BackgroundPrimary pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PMEC) is an extremely rare malignancy. Its clinical characteristics and prognosis are not fully understood. This study evaluated clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of PMEC and established a nomogram to predict its 1-, 3-, 5- and 10-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates.MethodsIn the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016, patients pathologically diagnosed with PMEC were identified. Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox regression were performed to evaluate the CSS stratified by different covariates. A predictive nomogram model was built and validated by the concordance index (C-index) and calibration curves.ResultsA total of 585 PMEC patients were identified. A total of 408 (70%) of patients were placed into the training cohort, and 177 (30%) patients were placed into the validation cohort. The 5- and 10-year CSS rates of stage I–II PMEC patients were 91.4 and 88.9, respectively. The 1-, 3- and 5-year CSS rates of stage III–IV PMEC were 56.5, 39.45, and 32.1%, respectively. Survival curves showed that older age, large tumor size, poor differentiation, and high TNM stage were associated with a significantly worse prognosis. CSS outcomes were significantly better in patients who received surgical treatments (surgical alone, surgery plus radiation and/or chemotherapy). Patients who received radiation and/or chemotherapy had the worst prognosis. Multivariate Cox results revealed that covariates, including age, tumor laterality, tumor sizes, pathological differentiation, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage and therapy, were independent prognostic factors for PMEC. These factors were used to construct a nomogram. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.921. The calibration curve presented favorable consistency between the predicted CSS and actual observations. This nomogram was validated by the validation cohort. The C-index of the validation cohort was 0.968.ConclusionAge, bilateral tumors, tumor size, pathological differentiation grade, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage and therapy were independent prognostic factors of PMEC patients. The first nomogram for predicting the CSS of PMEC was built and validated, showing its potential value in practice.
