<p class="p1">The non-strategic role and position of women workers in trade union organization, even in the women-dominated sector, is hardly changed even though the number of women members of trade unions is increasing. Various programs have been carried out to increase the strategic role of women in trade union organizations but so far have not shown significant results. Based on interviews with officers of gender equality programs for trade unions, union leaders and women and men members and literature studies this paper offers an idea of the need for a non-exclusive approach and actively and proportionally involving men in awareness-raising and gender equality programs for trade unions. This idea is based on the fact that in trade unions gender-related program is always left to or only involves women. The strategy in the gender equality awareness and improvement program that only involves women causes the program’s effectiveness to be low because half of the causes of the problem is not involved.</p>

Industrial hubs and insertion in global value chains (GVCs) usually bring about new jobs for women in developing countries. Firms in industrial hubs employ a majority of women workers, providing them with a waged employment, often for the first time, and an opportunity for empowerment and self-reliance. However, these jobs are often characterized by low wages, poor working conditions, and labour-rights violations. This chapter provides an overview of opportunities and challenges for women’s empowerment, and gender equality in the context of jobs in industrial hubs, looking at empirical evidence from developing countries, and their linkages with existing cultural and gender norms. It also provides reflections on the governance of work and recommendations for gender-inclusive policies, showing that industrial hubs and GVCs can provide a path of economic upgrading for developing countries, but that only when that process is paired with social upgrading for women workers, will overall development gains be attained.

This chapter analyses the ‘empowerment paradigm’ that informs many gender equality policies and programmes. The discussion draws on the findings of a global study inquiring into women’s NGOs; their understanding of empowerment and gender equality and how these inform their work. The chapter explores how concepts of gender equality and empowerment can be seen as emancipatory and how they are understood and applied at a global social policy level. Furthermore, given the intrinsic relationship between women’s emancipation and feminism, the chapter also explores the contemporary role of feminism within women’s NGOs. The data supports a critical analysis of the way that the concept of empowerment has become simultaneously subverted and yet highly influential within gender equality policy and practice.

Abstract: Gender inequality is a problem faced throughout the world, including in Indonesia, where the patriarchal system causes women to often get injustice from various sectors, especially the work sector. In 2014, UN Women initiated the formation of HeForShe by making men as agents of change so that women can live equally without discrimination. This research then aims to see why the HeForShe organization involves men in efforts to address gender inequality in Indonesia. This research also uses qualitative methods with various data sources from the HeForShe organization, the Government of Indonesia and the Ministry of PPPA. The theory used is Liberal Feminists with the concept of men as privileged allies. The results of this study indicate that men as privileged allies in the struggle for the rights of women workers in Indonesia. The support provided by Indonesian men currently varies from learning about gender equality to building movements to support the elimination of violence against women. It is through this contribution that women's voices will be heard and gender equality actions will be better realized. Keywords: Indonesia, Gender Inequality, HeForShe, Privileged Allies, Equality, Rights of Women Workers   Abstrak: Ketidaksetaraan gender merupakan permasalahan yang dihadapi di seluruh dunia termasuk di Indonesia dimana sistem patriarki menyebabkan wanita seringkali mendapatkan ketidakadilan dari berbagai sektor terutama sektor pekerjaan. Pada tahun 2014, UN Women menginisiasikan terbentuknya HeForShe dengan menjadikan pria sebagai agen perubahan agar wanita bisa hidup setara tanpa diskriminasi. Penelitian ini kemudian bertujuan untuk melihat mengapa organisasi HeForShe melibatkan pria dalam upaya penanganan ketidaksetaraan gender di Indonesia. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan berbagai sumber data dari organisasi HeForShe, Pemerintah Indonesia serta KemenPPPA. Teori yang digunakan adalah Feminis Liberal dengan konsep pria sebagai privileged allies. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pria berperan sebagai privileged allies dalam perjuangan hak pekerja wanita di Indonesia. Dukungan yang diberikan pria Indonesia saat ini sangat beragam mulai dari mempelajari mengenai kesetaraan gender sampai membangun gerakan untuk mendukung penghapusan kekerasan terhadap wanita. Melalui kontribusi inilah suara wanita akan lebih didengar dan kesetaraan gender akan terwujud dengan lebih baik. If the development of technology, means of communication, and rapid transportation have made continents closer and made the world a small village, the outcome of the ensuing encounters among cultures and civilizations is far from being a mere success. Within this new reality Muslims, whether they live in majority or minority contexts, face multiple challenges in terms of relating to non-Muslim cultures and traditions. One of these areas is the status of women and gender equality. Ali Mazrui was one of the few Muslim intellectuals to be deeply interested in this issue. His dual belonging, as an African and as a westerner, enable him to understand such issues arising from the economic, political, and ethical contrasts between the West and Islam. This work pays tribute to this exceptional intellectual’s contribution toward the rapprochement between the western and the Islamic value systems, illustrating how he managed to create a “virtual” space for meeting and living together between two worlds that remain different yet dependent upon each other.
