Background: Currently, there is a significant increase in the number of older generation groups, which may result in serious economic and social issues. Therefore, there is a need to prolong the active life of these older individuals, especially by focusing on modifying lifestyle factors such as healthy nutrition. In fact, recent research has shown that, for example, nuts are an important part of people’s healthy diet because they have appeared to be neuroprotective compounds which might maintain or in some cases even improve people’s cognitive functions. Objective: The purpose of this review study is to explore the role of the nut nutrition in the maintenance and delay of cognitive decline among older individuals. Results: The findings indicate that the nut consumption may contribute to the delay of cognitive decline in aging. However, this nut diet is just one component of the multi-nutrient dietary intervention for health aging. Conclusion: More longitudinal controlled randomized studies have to be performed in this field to prove the efficacy of the nut nutrition for the delay of cognitive decline.

Pet ownership has been associated with positive outcomes in many populations, yet the associations with physical and psychological wellbeing in people with dementia remain unclear. The current study used baseline data from 1,542 people living at home with mild-to-moderate dementia from the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life (IDEAL) programme. Regression analyses investigated associations of pet ownership and pet care with self-reports of walking, loneliness, depression, and quality of life (QoL). After adjusting for covariates, having any pet was associated with higher likelihood of walking over 3 hr in the last week. Those with a dog and who were involved in its care were less likely to be lonely than those with no dog. Having any pet but no involvement in its care was associated with increased depression and decreased QoL compared with those without a pet. The key factor in the associations was involvement in the care of the pet by the person with dementia.

Abstract Following the recent discovery of Bourbon virus (BRBV) as a human pathogen, and the isolation of the virus from Amblyomma americanum (L.) collected near the location of a fatal human case, we undertook a series of experiments to assess the laboratory vector competence of this tick species for BRBV. Larval ticks were infected using an immersion technique, and transstadial transmission of virus to the nymphal and then to the adult stages was demonstrated. Transstadially infected nymphs transmitted virus to adult ticks at very high rates during cofeeding, indicating the presence of infectious virus in the saliva of engorging ticks. Vertical transmission by transstadially infected females to their progeny occurred, but at a low rate. Rabbits fed on by infected ticks of all active life stages developed high titers of antibody to the virus, demonstrating host exposure to BRBV antigens/live virus during tick blood feeding. These results demonstrate that A. americanum is a competent vector of BRBV and indicate that cofeeding could be critical for enzootic maintenance.

In a bibliometric study of references to indexing and abstracting from 1876 to 1976 a total of 2,381 references in Wellisch’s Indexing and abstracting: an international bibliography were analysed by a PL/1 program. Most of the articles (67%) appeared as journal papers. The Bradford-Zipf law was applied to investigate the journal literature. Thirteen core journals were identified, six of which emphasize the subject of indexing and abstracting. Lotka’s law was used to measure the productivity of authors. The vast majority, 1,533 out of 1,966 authors, contributed only one article. The leading authors and their active life in this subject were also studied. English is the predominant language of articles on indexing and abstracting.

Mothers of 25 children with congenital heart disease were interviewed to elicit family reactions to the patient's disorder. Problems for parents included: vague apprehension about the behavior of the newborn, uncertainty about the diagnosis, anxiety about the child's symptoms, fears of death, feelings of guilt, disappointment and irritation with their burden, overprotective attitudes, attempts to provide the child with a normal active life, difficulties with discipline, and various problems related to hospitalization, cardiac catheterization, and heart operation. The physician's role in management of such patients is aided by awareness on his part of the general and specific impact of this handicapping disorder of childhood.
