Abstract RED CUT COBALT steel is made by adding 5% cobalt to the conventional 18% tungsten -4% chromium-1% vanadium high-speed steel. Cobalt increases hot or red hardness and thus enables the tool to maintain a higher hardness at elevated temperatures. This steel is best adapted for hogging cuts or where the temperature of the cutting point of the tool in increased greatly. It is well adapted for tools to be used for reaming cast-iron engine cylinders, turning alloy steel or cast iron and cutting nonferrous alloys at high speeds. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and hardness as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-367. Producer or source: Teledyne Vasco.

Abstract ELECTRITE CO-6 is a high-speed steel of the 6 molybdenum-6 tungsten type to which 9% cobalt has been added. This cobalt addition increases the red hardness and permits a retention of greater cutting hardness at elevated temperatures. It is designated as SAE-M36 and AISI Type M36. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-35. Producer or source: Latrobe Steel Company. Originally published July 1955, revised June 1963.

Abstract Panther 5 is a 5% cobalt, high-carbon, high-vanadium, tungsten high-speed steel. Because of its excellent red hardness, higher cutting speeds can be used with Panther 5 than with the regular high-speed steels. Heat treating Panther 5 to its maximum hardness will provide long tool life. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-301. Producer or source: Allegheny Ludlum Corporation.

Abstract AISI Type T4 is made by adding 5% cobalt to the conventional 18% tungsten-4% chromium-1% vanadium (AISI Type T1) tool steel. The cobalt dissolves in the ferrite and strengthens the matrix of the steel whereas the other alloying elements form carbides. Thus the cobalt increases the hot or red hardness, thereby enabling the tool to maintain a higher hardness at elevated temperatures. Type T4 is well adapted for cutting hard, gritty materials such as cast iron or other abrasive materials and for cutting nonferrous alloys at high speeds. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and hardness as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-395. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.
