Abstract Multiple-row container-grown trees require specially designed sprayers to achieve efficient spray delivery. A five-port air-assisted sprayer with both automatic and manual control modes was developed to discharge adequate spray deposition inside multiple-row trees. The sprayer resulted from integration of a high-speed laser-scanning sensor with a sophisticated nozzle flow control system, an embedded computer with a touch screen, a Doppler speed sensor, a specially-designed algorithm and an air-assisted sprayer base. It was able to detect target tree presence and measure target tree size, shape and leaf density. The sprayer then controlled the spray output of each nozzle to match tree structures. The sprayer was tested for its sprayer deposition quality inside canopies in a four-row sterling silver linden (Tilia tomentosa 'Sterling Silver' Moench) field and another six-row northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) field. Tests were conducted with the sprayer in variable-rate application (VRA) and constant-rate application (CRA) modes. The average spray deposit on foliage of trees was 1.37±0.47 μL cm−2 from VRA and 1.29±0.42 μL cm−2 from CRA in linden, and was 2.15±0.57 μL cm−2 from VRA and 2.72±0.94 μL cm−2 from CRA in red oak, respectively. In comparison, spray coverage on foliage of trees was 19.8±3.0% from VRA and 20.9±4.3% from CRA in the linden trial, and was 27.9±3.7% from VRA and 30.5±5.4% from CRA, respectively, in the red oak trial. The newly developed air-assisted sprayer in both VRA and CRA modes would be able to discharge adequate spray deposition inside multiple-row tree plants while conserving pesticide. The purpose of this research was to investigate both the qualitative and quantitative morphological traits of Phytoptus tetratrichus Nalepa 1890 populations inhabiting three different lime tree species: Tilia cordata Mill., Tilia tomentosa Moench and Tilia americana L.. Morphological characters of two populations collected from T. cordata and T. tomentosa over three successive growing seasons were compared with the aid of canonical variate analysis. Additionally, individuals occurring on T. americana in a consecutive year were also studied. Protogyne and deutogyne females were differentiated using both qualitative and quantitative traits. For deutogyne females, individuals from all combinations of Tilia species × year (which constituted populations for comparison) clearly differed from each other. However, the differences between populations from T. cordata and T. tomentosa were less distinct. For protogyne females, observed differences were clearly visible. The between-season variation in morphological characters such as body size appeared to be quite large, indicating that morphological analysis based on observations from only a single season can be inaccurate. Deutogyne females of P. tetratrichus were observed to cause various types of damage symptoms: leaf-roll galls along the leaf edges of T. cordata; small round erinea on the lower leaf surface and small wart-like galls on the upper leaf surface of T. tomentosa; fingerlike galls on both leaf surfaces of T. americana.

Paralongidorus francolambertii sp. n., a bisexual species found in the rhizosphere of silver lime (Tilia tomentosa) and common juniper (Juniperus communis), is described. The species is characterised by its medium to large size (L = 5.86-8.29 mm) and slender body (a = 143-197), a lip region flattened with rounded profile, clearly offset from the body by a deep constriction, a narrow neck between the head and body, a shoulder-like body posterior to the neck, a stirrup-shaped amphidial fovea, with conspicuous slit-like aperture, lying on the lateral cuticular collar, a moderately long odontostyle ca 140 μm long, a guide ring located at ca 28 μm from anterior end, a tail terminus with thickened outer cuticular layer in both sexes, and males with spicules ca 52 μm long. The D2-D3 expansion domains of the 28S rRNA gene and the ITS-containing region of P. francolambertii sp. n. were amplified and sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses by using the Maximum Likelihood method showed that P. francolambertii sp. n. had a sister relationship with P. rex and that all Paralongidorus species formed a well-supported group.

Lidar com os riscos inerentes ao processo de arborização nas cidades é o grande desafio para a gestão do espaço urbano. Com o objetivo de analisar o risco de queda de árvores, foi desenvolvido e aplicado formulário de inspeção visual. Foram realizadas tomografias acústicas como ferramenta complementar de avaliação da condição mecânica da estrutura do tronco de árvores. A coleta de dados é relativa a exemplares vivos da espécie Tilia tomentosa Moench, no Parque Dr. Manuel Braga, em Coimbra/Portugal. Os resultados da inspeção visual subsidiaram a seleção dos exemplares submetidos à tomografia acústica e culminaram na classificação das árvores em termos de risco, sugerindo a necessidade de monitoramento dos ramos das árvores. Os resultados obtidos a partir das tomografias acústicas são coincidentes com estruturas consideradas mecanicamente estáveis, mesmo para aquelas visualmente consideradas condenadas. A inexistência de um banco de dados mundial sobre árvores urbanas e as dificuldades inerentes ao diagnóstico contribuem para aumentar a complexidade da análise de risco de queda de árvores, acentuando a necessidade de viabilizar suporte técnico-científico, para garantir prevenção de danos e adequada tomada de decisão quanto à realização de intervenções nas árvores do ambiente urbano. Espera-se com o presente contribuir para estudos de Tilias.

Heavy metals are elements that are very harmful to human and environmental health. Heavy metal concentration in the fruits grown in city centers can reach very high levels and consuming these fruits as food causes a direct intake of heavy metals, which these fruits contain, into a human body and can pose a significant health risk. All the compounds of barium (Ba), which is one of the most dangerous heavy metals, are toxic. Thus, determining the Ba concentration in plants, which are grown in areas with high pollution and consumed as food, is very important. In the present study, it was aimed to determine the change of Ba concentration by species and organ in several fruits grown in areas with high traffic density. Within the scope of this study, Ba concentrations in leaf, branch, bark, seed, and fruits of Prunus ceresifera, Tilia tomentosa, Prunus avium, and Prunus cerasus were compared. As a result, it was determined that the change of Ba concentrations by species and the change by organ were statistically significant in all organs and in all species, respectively. In general, the lowest values were found in Prunus cerasus or Prunus avium, whereas the highest values were observed in Tilia tomentosa. Considering the organs, the lowest values were found in seed and the highest ones in bark and branch.
