The role of cultural dimensions in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language in the UK is not as fully understood as it needs to be, especially in relation to developing students' abilities with intercultural communication. This paper adopts an ecological perspective on learning another language and seeks to contribute to the field of teaching and learning a foreign language through an investigation of the perceptions and experiences of university-based learners of Chinese. Learners' perceptions and experiences might productively be conceptualized with an ecology metaphor which provides analysts with a complex view of the learning and use of language based on a consideration of time and space. This present study focuses on one aspect of a broader research project in which the author investigated a group of students studying Chinese at universities in London and other British cities whose construction of culture and intercultural competence while learning Chinese as a foreign language was based on their learning experiences and intercultural encounters. In what follows we consider the concept of 'language distance' in order to understand both the linguistic and social space that students of Chinese need to overcome. Drawing from the research data, the paper also considers the notion of intercultural communication and learning as arising from a seamless interaction between different layers of fluid social processes. The paper argues that Chinese as a foreign language in higher education can provide resources for developing intercultural dimensions of learning. The paper concludes by stressing that changes in approach to teaching and learning Chinese are increasingly necessary because of the rapid changes that are taking place within the social and political ecology of China and the Chinese language.

Abstract Languages curricula are an important, yet underutilized, site for students’ development of intercultural knowledge, awareness and skills in higher education, though there has been little related empirical research. Given the key role teachers play in student learning, in the context of two Australian universities, this study explores language teaching academics’ perspectives on language, culture and intercultural communication, and how these are reflected in their teaching approaches. As part of a larger needs analysis project into the teaching of languages and intercultural communication, this article reports on semi-structured interviews with ten academic staff engaged in teaching and/or researching languages, and one study abroad coordinator with a language teaching background. Interpretations of the key concepts varied, as did participants’ reported approaches to teaching, from critical to instrumental. Teachers’ interpretations and approaches were influenced by their teaching and learning histories, and while there were a range of approaches to the incorporation of the (inter)cultural in the teaching of languages, this was approached more critically than reported in previous studies. Contextual features which may limit such integration of language and culture are discussed, as is the contribution of languages teachers to students’ development of intercultural competence.

Developing intercultural competence in teaching French for professional purposes at university Our study investigates an essential problem related to university teaching, namely continuous adaptation to the labour market standards and requirements, which at the curriculum level involves a correlation between learning objectives and competency profile requested and expected in the professional world. With respect to foreign language teaching for professional purposes, this correlation implies, among other things, the integration of intercultural dimension in the contents taught in order to provide the student with necessary skills and enabling him/her able to efficiently (inter)act in today’s multicultural labour market, and finally meet the needs of contemporary world. In this context, our research firstly offers a theoretical approach to the concepts of culture and interculturel, which are envisaged as landmarks in today’s foreign language teaching philosophy and which specify, through their specific objectives to be achieved, new standards that foreign language teaching must comply with. Our study also offers a theoretical framework to the particularities of foreign language teaching for professional purposes. This enables us to reformulate the initial objectives associated to foreign language for professional purposes by integrating the objectives related to the development of intercultural competence. Finally, this study also proposes a concrete course content of medical French based on the course already delivered to the students studying medicine in Dunarea de Jos University of Galati. The course has been remodelled so as to meet the objectives of intercultural competence. In doing so, we firstly analysed the topics included in the course content with respect to aspects related to culture or intercultural communication, and afterwards we provided a list of cultural- and intercultural communication-oriented topics that could be articulated around the already proposed content of a French course for medicine. This proposal is also accompanied by a series of methodological recommendations that should be taken into consideration prior to designing a course for medical French. Key words: French for professional purposes; culture; intercultural; competence; teaching and learning.

The present paper attempts to investigate the developement of existential competence within the framework of the intercultural approach to foreign language teaching. The main dimension of this approach to be explored is the application of the semantic analysis of key words for each culture designating values. To better understand the theoretical background of the intercultural competence its main aspects will be analyzed, i.e. alterity, representation, and identity. The analysis will especially include the process of discovering the real meaning of wordswithin their cultural background. Such a reflective approach to teaching and learning foreign languages allows the students to change their ethical attitude towards foreign cultures as well as their own culture.

Working with English learners for many years, gives you the opportunity to encounter linguistic obstacles that they face while learning English language as a foreign language. Additionally, teaching for 13 years and observing the learning process, it enables you to recognize the students’ needs and at the same time, detect linguistic mistakes that they make, while practicing the target language. During my experience as a teacher, in terms of teaching and learning verbs in general and its grammatical categories in specific, it is noticed that Albanian learners find it relatively difficult the correct use of verbs in context and even more confusing the equivalent use of verbs in Albanian. Since verbs present an important part of speech, this study aims to investigate several differences and similarities between grammatical categories of verbs in English and Albanian. As a result, the Albanian learners of English language will be able to identify some of the major differences and similarities between the grammatical categories of verbs in English and Albanian; overcome the usual mistakes; gain the necessary knowledge regarding verbs and use them properly in English and Albanian.
