With technological advances, the creation and use of sustainable materials is increasingly sought. One of the most widely used sustainable materials in civil construction corresponds to ecological bricks, thus, the present work aims to carry out a brief bibliographical survey on the reuse of waste in the manufacture of ecological bricks, aiming at sustainability. In this research, the studies presented show exactly different recyclable components, such as: PET bottles, Styrofoam, rubber, etc., precisely to add ecological diversity and impose an appropriate purpose to these resources in a way that motivates sustainable development. This investigation in several materials in the verification of the applicability of ecological brick, in order to submit and understand the behavior of these new materials.

The ethnographical collection of Mamirauá Sustainable Development Institute under the responsibility of the Handcraft Program and formed by an assortment of artifacts and handcrafts from the Medium Solimões River region coming from the communities living inside Mamirauá and Amanã Sustainable Development Reserves and neighboring municipalities. The creation of this collection is relevant because the artifacts and handcrafts collect are identity marks of its producers, their regions, and are also used by the craftsmen themselves as reference in their assessments which aim to detect changes occurred in the objects after a certain period of time, specially in the processing of raw material and the comparison with new models relative to size and the different weaving types. The collection consists of 300 pieces organized as follow: pottery, weavers, strings, fabrics, wood implements and other materials. The objectives of this paper are:(i) Discuss the importance of the formation of an Ethnographical Collection in the Medium Solimões River; (ii) Present the methodology used to form and organize the assortment which integrates the collection; and (iii) Present the results of the work developed until now inside the Technical Reserve.

This document discusses the Japanese context of Society 5.0. Based on a society-centered approach, Society 5.0 seeks to take advantage of technological advances to finally solve the problems that currently threaten Japan, such as aging, birth rates and lack of competitiveness, among others. Additionally, another objective is to contribute to the progress of the country and develop the foundations for a better world, in which no individual can be excluded from the technological advances of our current society, to achieve this goal, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) have been developed. SDGs seek to assess the methods of use of modern technology and thus find the best strategies and tools to use it in a way that guarantees sustainability within the framework of a new society that demands constant renovations.

Reasons why water storage reservoirs are necessary in accordance with the sustainable development strategy are described in the paper. The main positive and negative impacts of reservoirs on the environment are analyzed. The most important are: the improvement of hydrological regimes (decreasing maximal and increasing minimal flows), the creation of optimal water management, utilization and protection of water, and the creation of better conditions for river and coastal ecosystems. Negative impacts and measures for its mitigation or elimination are also analyzed. The conclusion is that water storage reservoirs can be harmoniously incorporated into the environment. Serbia has a limited number of locations suitable for the construction of reservoirs, therefore it is necessary to retain these areas for storage in regional development plans and other legal acts.

Abstract Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the context of sustainable development have intensified, with the development of research aimed at the production of new materials and binders for construction. This article analyzes the influence of pellet geometry in the production of clinkers, with the incorporation of construction waste (CCW). Procedures adapted from the method proposed by Brazilian Portland Cement Association were adopted in studies of laboratory clinkers, in an attempt to simulate the stages of the industrial process. Pellets were prepared with the same formulation, however, with four different geometries: spherical, with diameters of 1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm, with manual molding, and semi-spherical, with a diameter of 2 cm, using molds of PLA (polylactic acid) printed on a 3D printer to facilitate the molding of the clinkers in a standardized way. Clinkers were characterized mineralogically by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and the Rietveld method was used to quantify the phases. Variations in the quantities of the alite and belite phases were observed depending on the geometry of the pellets, although the same calcination conditions were used. This is probably due to the variation in the surface area (exposure area) and the gradients of the cooling rate.

Climate change, pollutants, sustainable development, and public health have become increasingly more relevant issues that continuously get addressed and discussed by governments and entities all over the globe. Through the adoption of policies and recyclable methods, they hope to encourage and aid the responsible consumption of natural resources so as to reduce the creation of waste. Furthermore, the generation of sustainable communities is encouraged so as to safeguard and protect the population's health against the risks associated with different types of pollutants. To support SMEs in the adoption of sustainable practices, this chapter aims to introduce, guide, and provide some useful tools that can then be utilized by readers and professionals operating within SMEs to maximize the effectiveness of their sustainability approaches and tools while also providing knowledge on how the implementation of sustainable practices could be integrated within their businesses.

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 commits the international community to promoting ‘just, peaceful and inclusive societies’ with a clear focus on security. Central to the goal, is the creation of ‘strong’ national institutions. Rather than taking this to licence the creation of repressive institutions, this chapter argues that SDG 16 invites a radical re-imagining of dominant discourses on security. This would see interpersonal insecurity as a core concern that must be addressed together with geopolitical insecurity, and recognize that strong institutions are those that are robust, well-resourced, responsive, and well-governed. In the absence of a shift towards sustainability in our pursuit of security, the transformative potential of Sustainable Development Goal 16 will be difficult to realize; indeed, the goal may instead be used to legitimate oppressive, repressive, and often fundamentally undemocratic measures and institutions said to be needed to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime.

People’s aesthetic appreciation for any art is bound to the craft of its artists, and that craft is deeply affected by the technology available. Movies have evolved through a long series of venues and technological advances—theaters to shrinking personal devices; roll film with sprockets added; increased frame rates; the standardizations with added sound; experiments with color, aspect ratios, and contrast; and the move to a digital format. This chapter traces these and the consequent psychological improvements in viewer engagement that they fostered—for example, the creation of motion also created aversive flicker, but flicker was then diminished by increasing frame rates and was eliminated by digital delivery. Sound had profound effects, among other things creating a temporary deglobalization of cinema. Color increased discriminability and punctuated the change of scenes. And increased aspect ratios more firmly stimulated people’s systems of balance and the feeling of presence.
