Reception of the Apostolic Text in the Poem of V. A. Zhukovsky ‘Agasfer’

В статье анализируется рецепция апостольского текста в поэме в. а. Жуковского «Агасфер». основные методы исследования: интертекстуальный, рецептивный, историко-литературный. средневековая легенда об Агасфере осмысляется Жуковским в религиозно-философском аспекте: как сюжет о грехопадении и духовном воскресении. ключевой момент в сюжете духовного перерождения героя связан с темой покаяния, которая осмысляется в контексте священного предания как внутренний переворот, как духовное изменение. тема покаяния в поэме аллюзивно соотносится с образом апостола Павла и его посланиями. восстановление ценностно-смысловых ориентиров героя осуществляется в контексте откровения Иоанна Богослова. Значение апокалипсиса открывается герою во сне, что указывает на то, что вместе с духовным исцелением он также получил пророческий дар. Библейский текст играет важную роль в моделировании образной системы поэмы. один из центральных символических её образов - образ дверей, формируется на пересечении евангельских и апостольских аллюзий. отсылки к апостольскому тексту позволяют конкретизировать сюжетную, мотивную, хронотопическую организацию поэмы. в то же время включение прецедентного текста в структуру поэмы сообщает ей дополнительную символическую кодировку. Семиосфера апостольского текста в поэме «Агасфер» объёмна и пластична; она пересекается с евангельским и ветхозаветным контекстом, включает не только канонические книги Нового Завета - Деяния святых апостолов, их послания и апокалипсис, но также сочинения мужей апостольских, например, послание к Римлянам священномученика Игнатия Антиохийского. к особенностям функционирования прецедентного текста в поэме можно отнести, во-первых, перекодировку чужого (апостольского) слова в слово героя: апостольские цитаты вводятся в поэму как слово героя, как фрагменты его исповеди; во-вторых, отсутствие границ между разными книгами священного писания (библейские книги как богодухновенные произведения дополняют друг друга, составляя единое целое). The article analyzes the reception of the Apostolic text in V. A. Zhukovsky’s poem «Ahasuerus». The medieval legend of Ahasuerus is interpreted by Zhukovsky in a religious and philosophical aspect: as a plot about the fall and spiritual resurrection. The key moment in the plot of the spiritual rebirth of the hero is connected with the theme of repentance, which is understood in the context of sacred Tradition as an internal revolution, as a spiritual change. The theme of repentance in the poem allusively correlates with the image of the Apostle Paul and his Epistles. Restoration of value-semantic orientations of the hero is carried out in the context of the Revelation of John the theologian. The significance of the Apocalypse is revealed to the hero in a dream, indicating that along with spiritual healing, he also received a prophetic gift. The biblical text plays an important role in modeling the figurative system of the poem. One of its Central symbolic images - the image of doors, is formed at the intersection of Evangelical and Apostolic allusions. References to the Apostolic text allow to concretize the plot, motive, chronotopic organization of the poem. At the same time, the inclusion of the precedent text in the structure of the poem gives it an additional symbolic encoding. The semiosphere of the Apostolic text in the poem «Ahasuerus» is voluminous and plastic; it intersects with the Evangelical and old Testament context, includes not only the canonical books of the New Testament-the Acts of the Holy apostles, their Epistles and the Apocalypse, but also the writings of the Apostolic men, for example, the Epistle to the Romans of the Holy Martyr Ignatius of Antioch. The peculiarities of the functioning of the precedent text in the poem include, firstly, the recoding of someone else’s (Apostolic) word into the word of the hero: Apostolic quotes are introduced into the poem as the word of the hero, as fragments of his confession; secondly, the absence of boundaries between different books of Scripture (biblical books as inspired works complement each other, forming a single whole). Main research methods: intertextual, receptive, historical and literary.

Письма патриарха Константинопольского Николая Мистика архиепископу Аланскому Петру – основной документальный источник по истории христианства на Северном Кавказе в X в. Изучение «Аланского досье» патриарха Николая сохраняет актуальность в связи с ростом интереса к духовной истории народов Кавказа, находившихся на стыке цивилизаций, религий и культур и сформировавших под их влиянием собственные самобытные национально-культурные традиции. Основным методом исследования стало сопоставление лексических и семантических средств, используемых апостолом Павлом и патриархом Николаем в двух различных, но соотносимых исторических и религиозных контекстах. Цель исследования – выявление жанровых и литературных связей писем патриарха с книгами Нового Завета. Научная новизна заключается в обосновании лингвистических, семантических и богословских параллелей между письмами Николая и посланиями апостола Павла, особенно пастырскими (1-2 Тим и Тит). Хотя сравниваемые тексты хронологически разделены почти тысячелетием, отмечается типологическое сходство исторических контекстов, в которых они были написаны (духовный наставник – ученик в епископском сане – молодая христианская община из «варваров», нуждающихся в просвещении). В интерпретации Николая миссия – это именно тяжкий труд, но совершаемый по прямому повелению Бога и ради награды свыше, и в этом смысле патриарх вполне укоренен в новозаветной традиции. Как показали результаты исследования, риторическая и богословская насыщенность писем Николая Мистика не снижает их историческую ценность, однако для корректной интерпретации необходимо учитывать их литературный характер. Letters of Nicholas Mysticus, Patriarch of Constantinople, to Peter, Archbishop of Alania, remain the chief documentary source for the history of Christianity in the North Caucasus in the 10th century. The study of the "Alan Dossier" of Patriarch Nicholas remains relevant due to the growing interest in the spiritual history of the peoples of the Caucasus, who lived at the crossroads of civilizations, religions and cultures and formed their own distinctive national and cultural traditions under such diverse influence. The main research method was the comparison of lexical and semantic means used by the Apostle Paul and Patriarch Nicholas in two different, but correlated historical and religious contexts. The purpose of the study is to identify genre and literary connections between the letters of the Patriarch and the books of the New Testament. Scientific novelty lies in the substantiation of the linguistic, semantic and theological parallels between the letters of Nicholas and the letters of the Apostle Paul, especially the pastoral ones (1-2 Tim and Titus). Although the compared texts are chronologically separated by almost a millennium, there is a typological similarity in the historical contexts in which they were written (a spiritual mentor - a bishop student - a newly formed Christian community of “barbarians” in need of education). In the interpretation of Nicholas, mission is a hard work, but it is done at the direct command of the God and is rewarded from above, and in this sense, the Patriarch is completely rooted in the New Testament tradition. As the results of the study have shown, the rhetorical and theological richness of the letters of Nikolas the Mysticus does not diminish their historical value, yet for correct interpretation it is necessary to take into account their literary character.

The Author of the paper looks for a key to the theological thought of the Apostle Paul. The fact that it lacks a clear definition results in authors radically differing in their perception, for instance, regarding the relationship between the Old and the New Testament, and as a result, whether or not the Old Testament has a decisive influence on the Pauline thought, continuing along this line: whether the Apostle in his view always remained a Jew, or whether he distanced himself from Judaism. The fact that we do not have a category clearly defining the relationship between the Old and New Testament salvific reality results in an abundance of contradictory opinions. That is also transferred to other areas of the Pauline theology. The interpretation of Paul’s theology tends to be determined by preconceptions, built upon various ways of understanding the significance of the Old Testament, or various relationship to Judaism and its thought. The author of the paper indicates a concept, treated as marginal by scholars, of a new creation in Christ as the key to understanding the Pauline thought. It lays in the background of all themes treated by Paul and connects them into a single, coherent entity.

The author explores the Bible motifs in Edward Albee’s play «A Delicate Balance». Over the past few decades the theme of religiosity in literature has acquired special significance in connection with the rethinking of Christian values in the postmodernism. Edward Albee’s play «A Delicate Balance» defined in many ways the Christian theme in the work of American playwright which contradicted the established opinion of domestic literary critics about the incompatibility of Albee’s plays with the ideas of Christianity. The author conducts a conceptual analysis of the New Testament and Old Testament plots (the parable of the Good Samaritan and the story of Tobias from the Book of Tobit) and their interpretation in the drama. The author focuses on the intertextuality of the postmodern text: its cento form (allusions, parodies, paraphrases), the features of presence of the biblical text in the text of the play. Consequently, the article shows the distorted representation of the idea of brotherly love on the example of the interpretation of the parable about the Good Samaritan and the story about Toby. It is underlined that Edward Albee’s work is a continuation of the tradition established in American literature, including didactic and prophetic (messianic) principles.

AbstractPeter Singer's (1990 and 1993) interpretations of Biblical texts dealing with the natural world are evaluated in the light of recent Biblical scholarship. The texts in question are among those in the Bible relating to Christian ethical teaching about the natural world. The specific texts Singer examined concern the meaning of dominion and the flood of the earth in the book of Genesis in the Old Testament, particular teaching by the apostle Paul in the book 1 Corinthians in the New Testament, and certain actions by Jesus in the New Testament book of Mark. Singer's interpretations have a lengthy pedigree commonly used to hold Biblical teaching partly responsible for adverse Western attitudes to nature. This article argues that such interpretations contradict a deal of recent Biblical scholarship on the texts at issue.

Theological usage of the term “atonement” refers to a cluster of ideas in the Old Testament that center on the cleansing of impurity (which needs to be done to prevent God from leaving the Temple), and to New Testament notions that “Christ died for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15:3) and that “we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son” (Romans 5:10). In English translations of the Old Testament, “make atonement” usually translates kipper, the verb for the cultic removal of impurity from the Temple or sanctuary, accomplished through the dashing or sprinkling of the blood of the “purification offering” or “sin offering” on particular Temple furnishings. Kipper occurs most often, but not exclusively, in sacrificial texts. Kipper is also performed over the scapegoat in one passage (Leviticus 16:10). Thus, scholarly discussions of atonement in the Old Testament focus on the sacrificial and scapegoat rituals but also attend to the procedure for making a redemption payment, for which the word kopher (cognate with kipper) is used. The most important day in the ancient Jewish liturgical calendar was Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when the supreme sacrificial rituals of the year were performed, and the only day of the year on which the scapegoat rite was performed. Atonement in the New Testament is expressed through metaphors of sacrifice, scapegoat, and redemption to picture the meaning of the death of Christ. The Apostle Paul is the main fountainhead of these soteriological metaphors, but they occur in the other epistles and in Revelation. Atonement imagery is much less common in the Gospels, possibly appearing in the Lord’s Supper and the ransom saying (Mark 10:45). Most (but not all) scholars would agree that atonement in the Old Testament concerns cleansing the Temple (the Deity’s home), not soteriology. In the New Testament, however, atonement is central to the soteriological metaphors in Paul’s letters, the deutero-Pauline letters, Hebrews, First Peter, First John, and Revelation.

‘The God of peace’ in the New Testament. Why does the New Testament use the expression ‘the God of peace’ and what is the meaning of this phrase? In the Old Testament, the God of Israel is often connected with peace, but he is never called ‘the God of peace’. Not until the Hellenistic period is this expression sporadically found in Judaism (once in the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and once in Philo). As for the biblical Umwelt, the gods of the ancient Near East were not very peace-loving, and in the perception of Greco-Roman culture the god of war, Arès/Mars, as one of the twelve Olympians was much more prominent than Eirènè/Pax. However, the expression ‘the God of peace’ is found several times in the Corpus Paulinum and once in the letter to the Hebrews. This article investigates all New Testament texts that have this formula, suggesting that the apostle Paul could be responsible for the wording. In conclusion, Paul states that the God of Israel desires to establish a definitive peace in his creation through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ and by finally defeating all powers of evil. This apostolic message further indicates that Christians are supposed to be bearers of peace, promoting a peaceful atmosphere in their environment and in the world.

This article aims to analyse the strategies that jazz musicians in Barcelona adopt to develop their artistic careers. It focuses on studying three main areas that influ-ence the construction of their artistic-professional strategies: a) the administrative dimension, characterized mainly by management and promotion tasks; b) the artistic-creative dimension, which includes the construction of artistic identity and the creation of works of art; and c) the social dimension within the collective, which groups together strategies related to the dynamics of cooperation and col-laboration between the circle of musicians. The applied methodology came from a qualitative perspective, and the main research methods were semi-structured inter-views conducted with active professional musicians in Barcelona and from partic-ipant observation.
