This article discusses the possibility of using Earth remote sensing data and GIS technologies for assessing the area of green spaces in a city. Green areas are an important indicator of the urban environment quality. Quantitative information on such areas is necessary to calculate the total index of the urban environment quality, which is provided annually to the state statistics authorities. Various methods of obtaining such data are possible, including by decoding orthophotomaps, aerial photography, and mobile laser scanning. GIS technologies provide ample opportunities in this area: they allow one to create electronic maps, attributive databases, and maintain up-to-date information. The paper provides an example of using space images to calculate green areas in one of the microdistricts in the city of Perm. We describe the technique for recalculating the number of trees in a landscaping area; assess the planting areas of general and limited use and the total area of green spaces in the microdistrict; calculate the share of green areas and the greening level of the microdistrict, which are necessary for calculating the urban environment quality index. The technique proposed in this work can significantly reduce the time and labor costs for finding indicators of the urban environment greening.

The article notes the role of urban green spaces in providing a safe and comfortable environment of the industrial centre. The damage caused by anthropogenic impact to different categories of urban green spaces is briefly described. The necessity of using GIS-technologies and digital cartographic support to gather and analyze information about urban green spaces is stated. To solve this problem a new type of cartographic products – digital greening plans – is proposed and described in detail. Classification of digital greening plans, the cartographic notation, thematic content, main directions of use and target audience are considered. Fragments of digital greening plans depicted the experimental work area in Novosibirsk are given. Conclusion about the advantages of digital greening plans compared to related types of cartographic products is made.

There is considered methodology of estimation of contaminants and biogenic elements intake into water objects from urban watersheds by municipal non-point runoff. We used the Volkovka River in St. Petersburg and its watershed for the research because the watershed is characterized by high degree of variety and includes all possible types of urban areas: multi-storey residential constructions, industrial areas, green spaces, cemeteries, wastelands, and even agricultural areas. The research included the monitoring data processing, the watershed analysis by GIS-technologies, and field studies.

Landscape gardens and parks are part of the urban forests of St. Petersburg. They perform environmental functions, are the basis of urban planning and need cadastral registration. To account for public green spaces need a cartographic and semantic database of elements of landscape gardening. When developing the cadastre of vegetation, it is necessary to take into account all the objects of the city, taking into account each element of landscaping: the total area, the area of trees, shrubs, lawns, flower beds and other real estate at the research object. A holistic view of the landscape of gardens and parks can give a cartographic image and the use of modern geographic information systems (GIS). The results of surveys of green spaces are necessary for the purposes of competent management of plant resources of St. Petersburg.

The article presents the results of engineering and geoecological studies of the salinity of the soils of the city of Nukus to the ground water level. The results of observations of changes in the city’s ground water level are presented. It was found that the increase of the water level leads to additional salinization of the soils, which worsens the ecological situation of the city, has a negative impact on green spaces and reduces the longevity of plants. According to the results of research, maps-schemes of salinization of the city’s soil were compiled. Studies have shown that the soils of the territory of Nukus are saline and mainly belong to the chlorine-sulphate type of salinity.

Biscogniauxia canker or dieback (formerly called Hypoxylon canker or dieback) is a common contributor to poor health and decay in a wide range of tree species (Balbalian & Henn 2014). This disease is caused by several species of fungi in the genus Biscogniauxia (formerly Hypoxylon). B. atropunctata or B. mediterranea are usually the species found on Quercus spp. and other hosts in Florida, affecting trees growing in many different habitats, such as forests, parks, green spaces and urban areas (McBride & Appel, 2009).  Typically, species of Biscogniauxia are opportunistic pathogens that do not affect healthy and vigorous trees; some species are more virulent than others. However, once they infect trees under stress (water stress, root disease, soil compaction, construction damage etc.) they can quickly colonize the host. Once a tree is infected and fruiting structures of the fungus are evident, the tree is not likely to survive especially if the infection is in the tree's trunk (Anderson et al., 1995).

The spatial analysis of distribution and quantity of Hyphantria cunea Drury, 1973 across Ukraine since 1952 till 2016 regarding the values of annual absolute temperatures of ground air is performed using the Gis-technologies. The long-term pest dissemination data (Annual reports…, 1951–1985; Surveys of the distribution of quarantine pests ..., 1986–2017) and meteorological information (Meteorological Yearbooks of air temperature the surface layer of the atmosphere in Ukraine for the period 1951-2016; Branch State of the Hydrometeorological Service at the Central Geophysical Observatory of the Ministry for Emergencies) were used in the present research. The values of boundary negative temperatures of winter diapause of Hyphantria cunea, that unable the development of species’ subsequent generation, are received. Data analyses suggests almost complete elimination of winter diapausing individuals of White American Butterfly (especially pupae) under the air temperature of −32°С. Because of arising questions on the time of action of absolute minimal air temperatures, it is necessary to ascertain the boundary negative temperatures of winter diapause for White American Butterfly. It is also necessary to perform the more detailed research of a corresponding biological material with application to the freezing technics, giving temperature up to −50°С, with the subsequent analysis of the received results by the punched-analysis.
